Historia
In the past, humans were the dominant star-traveling species in the universe—until the Chapalil came, conquered, and absorbed the Earth into their intergalactic empire. One of the only humans ever granted nobility by the Chapalil, Charles Soerenson once led a failed rebellion against the alien overlords. Now his sister, Terese, has abandoned her homeworld, impelled by a broken heart to seek a new life among the worlds her brother rules. On Rhui, a planet off-limits to interstellar voyagers, Tess stumbles upon a dangerous Chapalil conspiracy.

This is the first in an outstanding series.

I read this series a couple of times in the past and am very happy audible made it available at last. I became a fan of Kate Elliot because of the quality of her writing and how she managed to describe and discuss several very diverse civilization: (1) that of an Alien empire that had conquered both Earth and other human planets, and (2) that of several very different human societies. The human societies are on a future Earth with its own stellar capacities and colonies as well as on another lesser developed (i.e. medieval) planet that had not been colonized by Earth. All this occurs with the circumstance that even though the Alien empire conquered all human planets, it has also made one man a highly placed prince of this empire. Not only that, he has actually been put into charge over all of the human planets by the Aliens, as a very high level aristocrat in the very caste oriented Alien empire. The main character is his heir and sister who accordingly is also a senior aristocrat that almost all aliens must obey since she is of such a high caste level. She is a true heroine and somehow gets stranded in the underdeveloped planet among a nomad people, the Jaran. She becomes part of this nomadic civilization. How that happens and her love affairs among warring nomads is what the first book is about. The book is well worth listening to.

This excellent book is for some unexplainable reason not listed by Audible in their book numbering, i.e. book number 36 since it is followed by Transylvanian Decision.

The last of an outstanding series (as read by John Lee)
Revisado: 04-17-22
As a reader I have been addicted to Science Fiction for more than six decades and often reread favorites, and over those decades managed to collect thousands of books in this genre. I am making this point since in my mind Mancour ought to be acknowledged as a member of the top ten (my personal account) SciFi/Fantasy authors. Mancour writes only about happenings in one imaginary world/universe/planet in which there multiple warring diverse 'good' and 'evil' civilizations. From the start of the series, the most important positive character is the title bearer of the first book/audio, Spellmonger. What makes the series so special is almost all throughout this long series, not only the Spellmonger's but also his apprentices, fiends, lovers, and enemies show true character developments in each succeeding book. Moreover, and perhaps even more impressive, innovative developments in the technologies of diverse civilizations. Civilizations included are based on ancient and/or newly developing magical technologies which in turn are expertly contrasted with both human medieval, as well as very High-Tech non-magic technologies. Mancour somehow managed to add new forms of usage of magic in each sequential book and yet it all makes sense and generally presented a humorous manner even during combat. There are few other Masters of the genre that do this too (e.g. Stirling, Weber, and Flint) but that makes them the Masters they are.
Hedgewitch is reflective of my compliments of this great imaginative series. There very few authors I preorder at Audible, but any Mancour book as read by John Lee is more than worth it in order to ensure I shift my listening imediately listening to the next book as soon as it is available.
