too many loose ends
Revisado: 07-25-18
this book has an amazing narrative drive and the story is incredible, but at the end I was left very unsatisfied. so many loose ends and plot points that didn't quite fit together. listen for a great plot, but don't try to figure out the twists. you'll be disappointed

With it, she hopes to find her daughter Nassun and forge a world in which every orogene child can grow up safe. For Nassun, her mother's mastery of the Obelisk Gate comes too late. Historia
When he was 19, James Stark was considered to be one of the greatest natural magicians, a reputation that got him demon-snatched and sent downtown - to Hell - where he survived as a gladiator, a sideshow freak entertaining Satan's fallen angels. That was 11 years ago. Now, the hitman who goes only by Stark has escaped and is back in L.A. Armed with a fortune-telling coin, a black bone knife, and an infernal key, Stark is determined to destroy the magic circle.

crazy and amazing
Revisado: 10-01-17
I don't know how Richard Kadrey managed to make the protagonist both lovable and am absolute asshole, but he did. This is an amazing book. A foul-mouthed romp through the seediest side of Los Angeles --with lots of very cool magic.

Historia
The year is 1703, and Matthew Corbett, professional "problem solver", is missing. Last seen by his friends in New York before he departed on a lucrative, seemingly straightforward mission for the Herrald Agency in Charles Town, he's been too long absent. His comrade-in-arms Hudson Greathouse has an increasing sense the young friend he thinks of as a son must have met with some unexpected peril.

not nearly as compelling as Speaks the Night Bird
Revisado: 06-30-16
i was so impressed with mccammon's earlier work that i was really excited about this. unfortunately, this book is light on mystery and heavy on overly terrible, predictable bad guy. then it ends at a place that feels like the middle. very disappointed.

The killer is at large, and it appears that the elder sister of the family escaped the carnage; it seems only a matter of time until she, too, is murdered. But where can Linna begin? The only surviving witness is the boy whose mother, father, and little sister were killed before his eyes. He has suffered more than 100 knife wounds and lapsed into a state of shock. He’s in no condition to be questioned....

Terrible writing. Nonsensical plot.
Revisado: 06-22-16
What would have made The Hypnotist better?
I was following along fine, although I never really got into the plot. The writing is wooden, without heart or feeling. Then one character finds out something he has done is the top story on the news: papers, TV, radio, everything. And literally no one has tried to call him. I thought maybe it was a dream or hypnotism, but it just kept on going and getting more ridiculous, but not in a way that made me think there was anything going on but terrible writing. More nonsensical plot followed, badly written, and I just couldn't listen anymore.
I will go back to a book that I've dropped if something about the plot sticks in my mind, if I keep wondering what happened to one of the characters. But I am not curious about anything in this book.
Has The Hypnotist turned you off from other books in this genre?
There are much better mystery and suspense novels out there. Many other authors do unreal well. This author does not.
Did Mark Bramhall do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
The narrator did an admirable job with these uninteresting characters, who are poorly differentiated by the text.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Confusion. Boredom. Bewilderment. Anger that this terrible book got published and somehow became a bestseller.

A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

glad I didn't give up on it
Revisado: 05-15-16
this book starts out with amazing characters, then gets confused. I almost gave up after an overly stereotypical scene between an overworked divorced mom and her spoiled daughter. however, after a lull, the book returned to great characters. even the mom and daughter are crafted with complexity. now I can't wait to read the rest if the series.

Couldn't get interested. Weak performance
Revisado: 04-15-16
The narrator's voice is beautiful, but so soft I couldn't hear it over car noise. I was kind of interested in the main character's story, but them she started giving a biography of T. H. White. I could not be convinced to care. Just quit listening.
