Historia
Two years ago, police officer Andrea Brady fell madly in love with a black-muzzled, slightly rumpled German shepherd who showed up at her house one misty autumn day. Now, with the brave and intuitive Justice as her expert K-9 drug sniffer, she's found an unbeatable partner. Then the unthinkable happens. A savage attack leaves a teenager dead and Andie trapped in every cop's worst nightmare. Placed on administrative leave, she's pursued by media and investigated by a deputy sheriff whose handling of the high-profile case could earn him a coveted promotion.

My favorite narrator!
Revisado: 08-22-24
It was a pleasant listen for the most part. The main character likable and mostly relatable.
The author could have done more research on police K9s. You don't just find a dog and a year later it's serving with a police department. Actually, I would have enjoyed the book more if the author had included what the training was like and how the dog handler - police dog relationship developed over time.
The investigation felt realistic, although I'm not familiar with that process.
I was a little disappointed when it started veering toward love story, as if the author didn't feel it was a strong enough story to stand alone (it could have been.)
I'm a dog lover but the dog wasn't my favorite part--bit too anthropomorphic, although bearable. My favorite parts were Andi's sessions with her therapist. Really rang true. An excellent therapist. I even learned something things about myself.

Historia
Everyone worries about the collapse of bee populations. But what about wasps? Deemed the gangsters of the insect world, wasps are winged assassins with formidable stings. Conduits of Biblical punishment, provokers of fear and loathing, inspiration for horror movies: wasps are perhaps the most maligned insect on our planet. But do wasps deserve this reputation? Endless Forms opens our eyes to the highly complex and diverse world of wasps.

Not what I was expecting
Revisado: 07-29-24
Watching a small enclave of paper wasps in progress above my back door, I became fascinated with these creatures and had many question mostly about their social behavior and concerns about their interactions with humans.
The book, charmingly narrated by its enthusiastic and knowledgeable author, did manage to allay my fears, but sadly for me didn’t quench my desire to know more about the wasps’ interactions within the nest.
The author starts the book with a longer-than-I-would-like tirade on why bees don’t deserve the adoration we have lathered upon them, but wasps should.
Then, like many scientists, the author spent much of the book discussing who discovered what and when, way back into history. This is important to frame the subject, but this is not my interest and I soon grew weary of the recitation of names and dates.
Then then author plunged into the evolution of wasps from nearly the very first cell. I learned from the discussion of eusocial development, it did not focus in on the questions I have about social interaction. About the time,it occurred to me that I should, check the table of contents. Not seeing any chapters that specially address my particular interest and not feeling up to 2 chapters describing an imaginary date with a long-dead historical figure, I felt it best to bail.
I am sure, though, that it will please many people with a different direction of interest.

Extremely annoying narrator
Revisado: 06-28-24
Despite the narrator feeling she had to give one of the main characters a high pitched, grating voice, I stuck with it until....
I came to a chapter called So Much Vomit.
And that was it for me, folks.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

End was worth it but longtime getting there
Revisado: 06-28-24
This is a story better read than listened to. And you need to settle in for the long haul. Many, many characters, each with not only their background told, but in most cases, generations of their families. Hundreds of tangents and meandering backroads taken. This is an author (with a narrator to match) who clearly *loves* storytelling and it's that love that draws the reader through it, if they are patient and willing to put in the time.
It takes some focus on the part of the reader, and I have to admit that I listened to other books during the course of getting through this one--sometimes you just need a break to get some perspective, and in time will find yourself drawn back to this book.
It's impossible to remember all the characters. This is why I say maybe it's better to read than to listen.
Eventually all the strands --or at least most of them--come together for a moving ending.
I actually think I will listen to this book again. I have to admit, there were innumerable times when I zoned out and had to replay short sections. Now that I kind of know who is who, I'm betting I'll enjoy it even more next time around.

When acclaimed naturalist Sy Montgomery and wildlife artist Matt Patterson arrive at Turtle Rescue League, they are greeted by hundreds of turtles recovering from injury and illness. Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Then the author appeared to get carried away and just threw every possibility but the kitchen sink into it. First 2/3s were entertaining, A good editor could have kept it manageable and made it a better book.

Historia
Mia, the irreverent, hyperanalytical twenty-year-old daughter, has an explanation for everything—which is why she isn’t initially concerned when her father and younger brother Eugene don’t return from a walk in a nearby park. They must have lost their phone. Or stopped for an errand somewhere. But by the time Mia’s brother runs through the front door bloody and alone, it becomes clear that the father in this tight-knit family is missing and the only witness is Eugene, who has the rare genetic condition Angelman syndrome and cannot speak.

I’m so lucky to have read/listened to some amazing books this year. Hard to decide which is best but this one is right up there! So absorbing and enlightening about the experience of non-speakers. Narration was perfect. Now I have to go look for other books written /narrated by this author/ narrator.
