Can't believe so many liked it.
Revisado: 03-08-25
I'm sorry I wasted a credit on this book. The story is very improbable. It's not even well written. And it is filled with non-erotic boring sex scenes.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

The narrator gave an amazingly energetic performance of this story. It's worth it if you can keep up.

Revisado: 02-02-24
This narrator has the most amazing talent. She is so good at creating both male and female character voices that it is almost unbelievable.

This is the story of Corlath, golden-eyed king of the Free Hillfolk, son of the sons of the Lady Aerin. And this is the story of Harry Crewe, the Homelander orphan girl who became Harimand-sol, King’s Raider, and heir to the Blue Sword, Gonturan, that no woman had wielded since Lady Aerin herself bore it into battle. And this is the song of the kelar of the Hillfolk, the magic of the blood, the weaver of destinies …

I fell in love with the hero, Laddie. I am now in my 70's, and I still believe his character portrays the ideal man. If you have never read this book, do take a chance...it will make you feel joyful. It is a lesson in virtue, and as Laddie says, "The way to be happy is to be good."

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Narrator was perfect, Audible edition is best!
Revisado: 05-14-21
This is another great story from Andy Weir. I rarely write reviews but I wanted to remark on how much this book is enhanced by being in Audible form. (I also own the Kindle edition.) The narrator, Ray Porter, is just flat out brilliant. His changes in pitch , tone, inflection, emphasis are always perfect for the text meaning. He makes every character distinct and individual and conveys different moods superbly. He also happens to be great at accents when necessary. I am grateful for his skill.

Historia
The Prescot family were miners. At one time, they were contracted to develop technology for a mineral-rich but uninhabitable system. Gradually, all the investors shied away. Then the Prescots broke through with the technology needed to exploit entire planets, and incidentally develop domed playgrounds for the perversely rich, including indoor ski slopes and cable cars over megavolcanos, casinos and rides.

Love this author, but
Revisado: 11-05-20
The narrator had a monotonic delivery and never paused a moment between scene changes. this made the book difficult to enjoy. First half was better than the second; I found the whole long escape and battle section boring. Perhaps a reader with military experience would have enjoyed it more. Also, it might have been better had I read the book myself on Kindle rather than listening to this narration.

Historia
The fighting has ended, the Armistice signed, but the war has left wounds that are still agonizingly raw. Battlefield Nurse Bess Crawford has been assigned to a clinic for amputees, and the Welsh patients worry her. She does her best to help them, but it’s clear that they have nothing to go home to, in a valley where only the fit can work in the coal pits. When they are released, she fears that peace will do what war couldn’t - take their lives.

Not as good as all their previous books.
Revisado: 09-21-18
Plot was just not credible to me. Authors seemed to struggle to contrive this post-war mystery for Bess. Characters and actions were often not very believable. On the other hand, I did finish the book and the narrator was very good as always.

Only Peter Ackroyd can combine narrative and unique observation with a sharp eye for the fascinating fact. His method is to position Shakespeare in the close context of his world. In this way, he not only richly conjures up the texture of Shakespeare’s life, but also imparts an amazing amount of vivid, interesting material about place, period and background.

I am so glad I chose this book!
Revisado: 08-06-18
I had read another Shakespeare bio many years ago (Will in the World) but I feel I learned so much more from this book. Simon Vance's narration is utterly clear and perfect. Ackroyd's research was amazingly extensive and his ability to synthethize it in entertaining prose was compelling. So compelling that several times I found myself listening late into the night, unable to "put the book down." It was that good. I eventually got the Kindle version so I could highlight passages and see the footnotes. I haven't read any of Ackroyd's another books but I highly recommend this one.
