Historia
"It began as a mistake." By middle age, Henry Chinaski has lost more than 12 years of his life to the U.S. Postal Service. In a world where his three true, bitter pleasures are women, booze, and racetrack betting, he somehow drags his hangover out of bed every dawn to lug waterlogged mailbags up mud-soaked mountains, outsmart vicious guard dogs, and pray to survive the day-to-day trials of sadistic bosses and certifiable coworkers.

The narrator is perfect
Revisado: 12-11-24
This is the first of Bukowski for me. Quite entertaining. But the narrator really brought the story to life; the perfect voice for this book.

Historia
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Good read, outstanding narrator
Revisado: 03-03-24
Beautifully written and an interesting tale. I kept thinking it would have a dark turn at some point but was pleased that it had a happy, if somewhat ambiguous, ending. The narrator is outstanding.

Historia
Born to the ranks of the lower English gentry in 1775, Jane Austen led what some have mistakenly described as an ordinary and unremarkable life - a life that ended all too soon at the age of 41. But from this life, Austen drew inspiration for six novels that all rank as literary masterpieces, including the widely beloved Pride and Prejudice. So, what do we really know about Austen’s life and influences?

Was hoping for more biographical material
Revisado: 04-15-22
But apparently there just isn't a lot of biographical material to work with. Sadly, most of Austen's letters did not survive. Much of this book is an exploration of the novels which reminded me of reading Cliff Notes. As much as I've enjoyed Austen's novels this did not add much for me.

Historia
What’s to be done about a jaywalking moose? A bear caught breaking and entering? A murderous tree? Three hundred years ago, animals that broke the law would be assigned legal representation and put on trial. These days, as New York Times best-selling author Mary Roach discovers, the answers are best found not in jurisprudence but in science: the curious science of human-wildlife conflict, a discipline at the crossroads of human behavior and wildlife biology.

Informative AND entertaining
Revisado: 04-15-22
We really enjoyed the writing style. Plenty of factual information but presented in an entertaining and often humorous way.

Exceeded expectations
Revisado: 07-17-21
An interesting story with a good bit of history and culture of India. I don't give any credence to the 'prophecy' stuff, but still an interesting tale.
