Historia
On the streets of Boston, the world is divided into the ordinary Usuals, and the paranormal Unorthodox. And in the Department of Unorthodox Affairs, the Auditors are the magical elite, government-sanctioned witches with spells at their command and all the power and prestige that comes with it. Grimshaw Griswald Grimsby is…not one of those witches.

Fascinating premise, great characters
Revisado: 03-15-25
Yes, you will end up loving the characters. Grimsby is just great. Yes, the world is deep, fascinating, and well-developed. Keep in mind that the story is character driven, and especially in this first book, a lot of the plot seems to coincidentally orbit around the protagonist. But it all is actually reasonable, and well put together. I recommend giving at least the first two books a shot.
Also, Wudge alone is worth the price of admission. Cracks me up.

Complex story, but every subplot pays off wonderfully
Revisado: 03-15-25
Rayne & Grimsby's bond. Mayflower's past, family, & dark secrets. Wudge's door, and how he'll open it with the nail... where it is. The nature, culture and backstory of the huntsmen--plural. Grimsby's magic, and why it sucks. The familiars, and the story behind them. The fate of Mansgraf's familiar (audiobook, don't know how its spelled). The story of the girl from the demon woman's club (whose mother Mayflower killed). Finally, the nature and history of the coven.
Each one is a subplot in this book that pays off wonderfully. Add to that Grimsby just being the self-deprecating, irrepressably good and kind, and you have a book that's a delight to experience. I love the banter between Mayflower and Grimsby. Really, between Grimsby and everybody. Wudge is still the best.
Oh, and the plot centers around Grimsby trying to... help Rayne. Iykyk. And the cherry on top--best new character: Abe. That is all. This book is great. Read the first two first--the story is strongly character-driven, and you need those journeys for everything to matter sufficiently.

Historia
Against all odds, Grimshaw Griswald Grimsby has become an Auditor, enforcing laws about magic for Boston’s Department of Unorthodox Affairs. But Grimsby soon realizes the daily grind of his job is far removed from the glamour he imagined. Overlooked for every exciting case, Grimsby tires of being told to handle mundane magical troubles, and appropriates a case file intended for a friend. Alongside Leslie Mayflower, the temporarily unretired Huntsman, Grimsby aims to crack the case and discover the origin of a strange, unfinished ritual.

Wow...
Revisado: 03-11-25
Listen, the story seems to have a rocky start. But stick it out, because this story is a banger. If you like mysteries, there is one hiding in plain sight. The story centers around Grimsby's first legitimate case, and his imposter syndrome. As well as his long standing feelings for Rayne.
It's a solid plot, but the real drawn to the story is the character drama. Grimsby is a good person who likes helping people, and is often influenced by his own deep empathy, born of his own suffering. he also makes self-deprecating that are actually pretty funny. He CAN feel a little bit like a Boy Scout at times, but man, he will when you over. It won't be long before you're tearing them on. Besides, he suffers so much! The plot is not gentle on him at all.
Also, Wudge and Mayflower are delightful, and heckle Grimsby just enough for the banter to be a delight.

All of the Dresden Files books are great. it isn't just the trappings of urban fantasy, but the fantastic characters, and all the fun they have together. I think the humor and the heart are Jim Butchers true strengths.

Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

If you're a fan if the series, you'll love it. Hell, if you like good fiction, you'll like it. Perfermance isn't Marsters, so that may phase you if you're already spoiled on the man's talent. But the story is great.

Simple. Short. But quite a feel-good, enjoyable story. Actually something I'd be happy to share with children. Just remember that it IS a fable. Lessons and all.

It's actually Douglas Swain delivering 3 Seminars
Revisado: 07-09-19
If you've read Techniques of the Selling Writer, you'll know that Douglas Swain has a good amount of helpful, general prescriptive writing advice. His advice is a very good foundation for any aspiring writers looking to write long form fiction. Much of the material in that book is explored in an approachable fashion in these 3 Seminars. Not everything in the book is covered, of course, but if you found Techniques a bit too dry, then this is a painless way of getting the gist of the material.
If you HAVE read Techniques, you won't find much here you haven't heard before. Though it is edifying to hear the material presented verbally. Why there isn't an audiobook for Techniques, I can't say.
One point of advice--Swain talks fairly slow. So you might want to set the playback speed to x1.5,

what if it's not the beginning or the end that is the key to a successful book? What if, amazing as it may seem, the place to begin writing your novel is in the very middle of the story? According to writing teacher James Scott Bell, that's exactly where you'll find your story's heart and heat. Bell's "Mirror Moment" is the secret, and its power is available to any writer, at any stage of the writing process...Bell presents a truly unique approach to writing a novel, one that will stand the test of time and serve you all your writing life.
