I haven’t enjoyed a fun book like this in a long time. Great premise, well written, light and funny, extremely clever. Can’t recommend it enough.

Finally I have the Home Front reality of what made the war possible, and the truly terrible chances Germany had to take to stay in the war. This is the data and a record of the personal values that underlies their aims and choices, a view you rarely get. Great book to balance out your view of the war.

A great love for the book and author
Revisado: 12-16-23
I’m late to the podcasts, but enjoying it very much. In this episode, I’d have to politely disagree with a few things. :). That’s what discussions are all about. And doing it in a pub with a pint in each would honour David Cornwell indeed. :)
You’re lovely young American bloggers and reviewers, but you can’t help but be divided from leCarre’s world by two generations of age, and a millennia of tradition. So you won’t get some things without tons of history reading. The Town vs Gown is a huge deal in Europe. And the Church vs Chapel goes back to the Reformation, and Henry VIII! There are cultural things that you won’t understand unless you’re around them a lot or had them explained at length in great depth. And that world he inhabits he writes from, and rebels against. So very hard to analyse his books unless you understand this background.

Tells us who the host is and what he’ll be doing for us in the first several episodes. These clearly set the style for episodes to follow later. He also mentions two other places for his reviews and blog posts. Very clear. And a very pleasant voice and manner.

Historia
For fans of the Netflix series The Crown, a meticulously researched historical tour de force about the secret ties among Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, the Duke of Windsor, and Adolf Hitler before, during, and after World War II. Andrew Morton tells the story of the feckless Edward VIII, later Duke of Windsor, his American wife, Wallis Simpson, the bizarre wartime Nazi plot to make him a puppet king after the invasion of Britain, and the attempted cover-up by Churchill, General Eisenhower, and King George VI of the duke's relations with Hitler.

Filling a very important gap
Revisado: 08-28-23
Andrew Morton’s work here is from voluminous official documents, treating any hearsay as deserves - reported, evaluated, and dismissed. It fills an important gap in the whole pre-WWII story often just glossed over. We can, without expert help, have no idea of the climate of Edward’s immense world-wide popularity, the desperate need of new Monarch George VI to not be overshadowed by a charismatic loose cannon of a brother, and the heartbreak of a family torn apart, and friends forced to chose sides.
All of it must focus on the personality of Edward, and why he said and did what is claimed, and verified. As Churchill later said, “One sees now that he would never do” as King. Especially during wartime.
James Langton brings a life and real verve to a well-written book. Very enjoyable. The whole book and narration flows well

Historia
On 22 August 1485, Richard III was killed at Bosworth Field, the last king of England to die in battle. His victorious opponent, Henry Tudor (the future Henry VII), went on to found one of our most famous ruling dynasties. Richard's body was displayed in undignified fashion for two days in nearby Leicester and then hurriedly buried in the church of the Greyfriars. Fifty years later, at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries, the king's grave was lost - its contents believed to be emptied into the river Soar - and Richard III's reputation buried under a mound of Tudor propaganda.

Well-written account of Richard’s life and death, and the search for his grave. Thoroughly enjoyable, well-reasoned defence of a rationale re-evaluation of Richard III’s reign and actions. Excellent narration.

Historia
Britain's Special Air Service - or SAS - was the brainchild of David Stirling, a young, gadabout aristocrat whose aimlessness in early life belied a remarkable strategic mind. Where most of his colleagues looked at a battlefield map of World War II's African theater and saw a protracted struggle with Rommel's desert forces, Stirling saw an opportunity: Given a small number of elite, well-trained men, he could parachute behind enemy lines and sabotage their airplanes and war matériel.

Ben Macintyre’s books are so good, so well researched and so well written. The story is of a new concept in war, its gradual formation as a military unit through training, trial and error. Unique personalities shape the story. Very well worth the read and listen.

Historia
After the Iraq War, when the reputation of Britain's spooks hit an all-time low, John le Carré's intellectual hero George Smiley came to be seen as the perfect spy, a man who would never allow intelligence to be misused for political purposes. Le Carré had revealed shortly before that the model for Smiley was the author and MI5 officer John Bingham, the 7th Baron Clanmorris. Michael Jago's brilliant account of Bingham's life is the story of an intelligence officer who had a deep influence on le Carré, then a junior colleague in MI5.

Wonderful insights and history
Revisado: 03-12-23
A very good look at the life of the man who inspired the character of George Smiley in the famous John LeCarre’ books. Admirably read by Christian Rodska, it deals with the triangle of the man, the character George Smiley, and the LeCarre’s relationship to John Bingham.
Interestingly, the underpaid spymaster also was an acclaimed novelist, and his wife a successful play-write.
I could wish for more details of John Bingham’s spy work itself, but that is likely still under Official Secrets Act restrictions. Very enjoyable all around.

Historia
The year that changed everything for the Beatles was 1966 - the year of their last concert and of Revolver, their first album created to be listened to rather than performed. This was the year the Beatles risked their popularity by retiring from live performances, recording songs that explored alternative states of consciousness, experimenting with avant-garde ideas, and speaking their minds on issues of politics, war, and religion. Music journalist and Beatles expert Steve Turner investigates the enormous changes that took place in the Beatles' lives and work during 1966.

This adds tremendous insights to our knowledge of the Beatles and their times, the social climate they lived in. Quite remarkable, with details that even the big biographies didn’t include.
And having Simon Vance narrate it made if perfect!
