Confusing Story

I was all into this story, it seems so real. But it's not, and ending is very odd. Not at all what you expect.

Historia
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Somewhat Parallels the Covid 19 Pandemic
Revisado: 08-27-20
I see some similarity in what we are experiencing with the Covid 19 Pandemic in this story. Although we still have food, water and medicines, transportation at this time. So many are unprepared for the future. There are shortages occurring daily, and the price of food and supplies is skyrocketing right at this moment. Fires and floods. Yes, we still have our electronics, but what if --those quit working? What if there were an EMP strike? This book made me really think about preparedness, and the lack of it in my own life. It gave me pause to think about the future of this country as we are so overwhelmed with a virus.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Best Book I've Listened to a Long Time!
Revisado: 07-08-16
If you could sum up The Nightingale in three words, what would they be?
Appreciate you Life
Who was your favorite character and why?
Isabel, for her strength in the most difficult of times.
What does Polly Stone bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The characters come to life with the different voices.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I learned a lot about what it was like to live in that era, better than any history book in a classroom could impart. How difficult those times really were. I cried a lot, but this is history and war at it's worst.
Any additional comments?
I loved this book! It's not only historical, but the characters in this story make it so real, and you feel what it must have been like to be alive during this period of history. How sad war really is. How cruel too. How the human spirit can survive if tested. How devoted to family people were back then because I'm not sure that is true nowadays.

Yes, at first I was worried there were too many characters...and perhaps there are, but by the 3 chapter I was understanding them,

Not really on the edge of my seat, but it certainly has a surprise ending!

No I haven't, but he is great! I look forward to the second book in this series, and hopefully many more.

Virgil Flowers kicked around for a while before joining the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. First it was the army and the military police, then the police in St. Paul, and finally Lucas Davenport brought him into the BCA, promising him, "We'll only give you the hard stuff." He's been doing the hard stuff for three years now, but never anything like this.

Difficult to Listen
Revisado: 07-27-15
Would you try another book from John Sandford and/or Eric Conger?
Probably not.
Would you recommend Dark of the Moon to your friends? Why or why not?
I found it difficult to listen to this story. The reader read it verbatim. As in "he said: "take me there", and then 'she said': "it's this way".'he said': "up this road', then 'he said': "which way". All throughout the book. No change in the voices to indicate which person was talking---just the he said, she said type dialogue.
What didn’t you like about Eric Conger’s performance?
I didn't like it!
Did Dark of the Moon inspire you to do anything?
No.

I Look Forward to this Series
Revisado: 11-03-14
Where does Deadly Ties rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It ranked up with the rest of the mysteries I like, and I enjoyed the story line.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
I didn't get on the edge of my seat until the last half of the book.
What about Robin Rowan’s performance did you like?
I didn't like the narrator at all, and almost quit listening the first two chapters. She did get better, but I hope the next book in the series has a different narrator. I continued to listen because I liked the story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I would not listen to this book in one sitting basically because of the narrator. Also, there were a lot of characters in this story, and they could have been pared down.
Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed learning about the kennel and dog training part of this story.

Gory Details---too much information
Revisado: 07-17-14
What disappointed you about Invisible?
I was ready for a good Patterson mystery, instead I was subjected to sexual gore. Not at all like Patterson's style of writing. I blame David Ellis for all the detailed sexual and graphic text.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment in the story line and I stopped listening and fast forwarded several times. Some very explicit dialogue about murder and sex.
