Sexy pole dancing romance
Revisado: 08-04-21
I listened to this as an audiobook and I really enjoyed the narrator! I thought she did well with the narration and voices of characters – a few were a little awkward but overall it was a good listen. I ended up on 2.4x speed.
This story follows Charlotte aka “Charlie” – she is vice president of marketing for a company, she’s engaged to be married, her and her fiancé have a beautiful mansion – but Charlie still feels like something is missing in her life. She decides to stop by the dance studio across the street from her office and sign up for classes – pole dancing classes.
Charlie falls in love with pole dancing and takes classes as often as she can. When she tells her fiancé what she has been doing, he is displeased and belittles her, telling her to stop taking “stripper” classes – which she is not happy about. Despite that, Charlie doesn’t stop taking classes and only becomes more invested in pole dancing even entering a competition. I love that Charlotte doesn’t let a man tell her what she can or can’t do – she loves dancing and both her mind and body are stronger because of it.
One day at the studio she literally runs into Paxton, owner of the dance studio, and he is crass and unapproachable and yet Charlie feels drawn to him. You can guess where this is leading. It’s hard to say more without giving too much away, but dark mysterious sexy man? Oh yeah, hard to resist.
Honestly there is a lot packed into this book. The main focus is the pole dancing but there are a lot of emotional relationships within this story. I was really invested in each character and they all felt pretty well fleshed out. I wanted to know what would happen next. While some moments were predictable, others took be my surprise and I appreciate when a book can do that.
While this was good, its not without its flaws. Some authors use certain words too often, and with this story, its “laughs” – everyone laughs at everything! And not just laughs. “…laughs, and laughs, and laughs” – 3 times in a row – is said more times than I could count. (I should’ve counted.) It got to be a little ridiculous how often the laughs x3 was used throughout this book. Nothing was ever THAT funny and it drove me up a wall insane.
Another thing that bothered me – Charlotte tells everyone to call her “Charlie” but only her fiancé and college best friend call her that. Everyone else in her life calls her Charlotte – so that nickname felt almost pointless to mention.
As with Rie Anders past book, this book was good, but it was missing a spark that could’ve made it great. Don’t get me wrong – I still enjoyed this and thought the romance was sexy, but I always felt like some spark was missing. I’m giving this a solid 3 stars – still a good rating!

Ok for a middle grade story
Revisado: 12-18-19
This started out really strong and it was interesting in the beginning! I was intrigued! But then the story felt like it went in a lot of different directions and it became confusing. I shouldn't be confused for a middle grade book, but this didn't feel coherent.
The narration was excellent, I loved all the different tones of voice used so that was perfect. Story however was lacking for me. A cute read for a middle grade age child but pretty average otherwise.

Fast, fun read
Revisado: 09-28-19
I finished this in just one day - I couldn't stop listening, I needed to know what happened!
The audiobook narrator was perfect for Shaye, she was wonderful and would recommend this as audio.
This was a fun read - I picked this up on a whim and I'm so glad I did.
It's a fast paced contemporary romance. It takes place in the past when the main characters are college age and then in the present, 8 years later. Shaye is a likeable character and easy to relate to. She's easy going but has a good head on her shoulders, and I liked that.
While some of this was very predictable, the story actually took a turn I didn't expect and shocked me - so that was nice!
While this book was good, it was missing that certain spark to make it GREAT.
There were a lot of unnecessary descriptions of clothes. Like, a LOT. Every time Shaye walked into a new room someones outfit was described down to the smallest detail. I didn't feel like that was always necessary, and the way it was presented was straight forward and bland. Some of the descriptions were bland, but I did feel I could visualize the island pretty well - the outfits, I didn't always care about. The world building lacked slightly but didn't bother me too much.
Overall I enjoyed my trip to Lopez Island and would recommend if you're looking for a quick romance read. It's not super heavy on any actual sexual acts, so if you're looking for something light & fun, this is perfect.

Unpopular Opinion - Couldn't stand this story
Revisado: 04-02-19
Clearly an unpopular opinion but, I couldn’t stand this book.
Spensa has to be one of the most whiny annoying female characters I’ve read about lately. Her whole life is about defying authority and ok, that’s the plot of a lot of novels, but she keeps arguing about why she is right and why they are wrong, but she’s just plain wrong and it will get her or someone else hurt or killed. She can’t accept that maybe she isn’t as good as she thinks and blames everyone else for her problems.
Her whole life is built upon her father being a coward and abandoning his flight crew in the middle of a battle. This “coward” fact is brought up at least once a chapter and how she doesn’t want to be marked a coward too. And how dying in battle is better than ejecting and being branded a coward. Ok, but then you’re a dead coward.
There is a lottttttttt of battle simulation training. Like. That is the plot of 75% of the book. And I just. Didn’t care? At all? Spensa “Spin” once again defies 99% of orders, and while she “wins” the challenge, she often dies in the simulations. Um. In real life, you’d be dead. Bye.
I didn’t even like the ship she found, ‘M-Bot’, until the very end. It was pretty annoying too… By the end of the book, things actually started happening and became interesting, but that was literally 90% into the book. The only way I powered through this was the audiobook on 2.5x speed.
Spin has a “defect” that’s only vaguely touched upon throughout the book and my immediate thought was, “Oh, so she’s Divergent.” That’s what it sounded like to me. She wouldn’t accumulate to society's norms, so she was “defect.”
I love sci-fi books. But I guess just not this kind of sci-fi.
Would not recommend the audiobook because the narrator makes Spensa sound like she’s about 12 years old.
If you like Star Wars you'll probably like this. But I don't like Star Wars.
If you like Illuminae Files or Sleeping Giants, you probably WON'T like this.

Awesome narration!
Revisado: 06-15-18
I thought the narration on this one was fantastic! I really enjoyed the dual points of view. Its basically a dark retelling of The Little Mermaid - so no, its not going to be 100% original but its a great story and rather dark at points - which I loved. It's a enemies to lovers trope and I'm SO here for it! Its also a standalone which is a nice change of pace from all the series. Really recommend this one if you're looking for a mermaid/siren/pirate story!
