Historia
For thousands of years, there has been a cycle: a Demon King rises and conquers, and a Hero is reborn a hundred years later to defeat him. Each time, civilizations are ground to dust beneath the Demon King's hordes, but humanity has remained secure in the belief that a Hero of legend will always save them. There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. If humanity simply waits for the Hero's return, there may be no world left for him to save.

RPG Fans, Assemble!
Revisado: 06-30-24
I LOVED this book. So much fun! If you like "Zelda," "Skyrim," and other RPGs, this book is for you. While I felt like this was kid friendly, it was also a riot for adults who will understand the satire and tongue-in-cheek humor regarding the odd, understood in-game quirks. The writing also pokes fun at the tropes in fantasy and good vs. evil.
Now, when I say this is like traveling through an RPG through the eyes of the playable character, please take that literally, which adds to the hilarious capers. Yui, our non-hero hero, will literally hear a voice coming from game-makers-know-where telling her she's learned new skills, leveled up, and acquired new quest items. Add a stodgy paladin type character who takes every opportunity to point out that they're breaking The Rules- you just have delightful FUN. Be prepared for nostalgia, whimsy, and all the feel-good emotions.
I'd rate this a PG-13 for mild peril and action/adventure violence.

Historia
On a planet where life is cheap, in a city built on corruption, very few things are considered holy. The Landing Site is one of them. The remains of the century-old habitat pod—which delivered the colonists to the only barely habitable place on the cruel world of Croatoan—has become a monument to the hardscrabble people who somehow survived the unsurvivable. So when blood is shed on that sacred ground, it’s seen as an attack against the entire colony.

Short and Sweet
Revisado: 08-25-23
Short, semi-solid sci-fi listen. I understand this is one of several books set in this world. Unfortunately, I'm not intrigued enough to track down more of the stories. While the plot and characters didn't pop enough to capture my attention, I'm not upset I listened to it.
I'd rate this a PG-13 for swearing, gore and violence, and some adult themes.

Under-appreciated in his time
Revisado: 08-25-23
I'm sorry this is over. I will re-read this duology many times again in my life and constantly be on the lookout for more books publishing by Mr. Peterson. Everyone should read these books.
12 More Rules For Life
1) "Do not carelessly denigrate social institutions or creative achievement."
2)"Imagine who you could be and then aim single-mindedly at that."
3) "Do not hide unwanted things in the fog."
4) "Notice that opportunity lurks where responsibility has been abdicated."
5) "Do not do what you hate."
6) "Abandon ideology."
7) "Work as hard as you possibly can on at least one thing and see what happens."
8) "Try to make one room in your home as beautiful as possible."
9)"If old memories still upset you, write them down carefully and completely."
10) "Plan and work diligently to maintain the romance in your relationship."
11) "Do not allow yourself to become resentful, deceitful, or arrogant."
12) "Be grateful in spite of your suffering."
I'd rate this a PG.

Seventeen years ago, Criminal Inspector Ewert Grens was called to the scene of a brutal crime. A family had been murdered, and the only survivor - and witness - was the five-year-old daughter. The girl was placed in the witness protection program, and the case went cold, but years later, Grens is still haunted by the seemingly random slaying and the little girl who was spared. So when he learns that the apartment where the crime occurred is now the scene of a mysterious break-in, Grens immediately fears that someone is intent on silencing the only witness.

Helström is Missed
Revisado: 08-25-23
I absolutely loved "Three Seconds." It was captivating in the same way one would be captivated listening to a brilliant criminal-gone-straight tell stories of his old life... because it was exactly that. While still enjoyable, the series doesn't pop now compared to when Börge Helström was still alive and co-authoring with Roslund. He was the underbelly of the situation in the best possible way.
I'm on the fence as to whether I'll continue to read this series knowing it's never going to pack the same punch. Also, I don't believe anything beyond book five has been translated to English yet. So I either learn Swedish or call it after "Sweet Dreams"....
I'd rate this book an R for cursing, violence/gore, crime, and adult themes including suicide.

Casinos and Street Gangs and Mafias, Oh My!
Revisado: 08-25-23
Casinos and street gangs and mafias, oh my! In a late 1800s era. With a bit of magic. What. a. setting. The setting earns a star all on its lonesome for this book.
I sort of liked the characters... ish. They were a little lackluster at times. Levi didn't quite pack the punch that should come with the title of Street Lord for me. We maybe need to hate his moral greyness a little bit... And Enne arced too quickly from mousy and timid to the stereotypical, cold-blooded "Strong Female Character." Since this is a trilogy, I really wish those shifts had been coaxed out more slowly.
The story line was solid. I was interested in the main plots, side plots, and wanted to know more about the magic system (but think I've got a good handle on it regardless).
All in all, solid read. I'll definitely pick up the next book in the series.
I'd rate this a PG-13 for cursing, some violence and gore, mild sexuality, and adult themes such as attempted rape, etc.

You know what, Bob....
Revisado: 08-25-23
Almost two years ago, I used an Audible credit to purchase this 365 day devotional. I would listen to one a day (usually) on my drive to work.
Bob Goff is one special, radical, love-filled human being. I am forever motivated when I read his books. I catch myself going, "Okay, it's great that you can do that, Bob. But I... I can do a version of that too, I guess. Fine! I suppose can do it. I can do it too, Bob. Happy?" And he is because...he's Bob.
But more importantly, I think his message is a more accurate, true depiction of God than we Christians like to admit. Because God is love and grace. And we're known more for the things we stand against than what we stand for. God stands for love, mercy, and forgiveness. Yet that's not the picture churches and Christians often portray. We lean very heavily into the "stand against" attributes. Yes, God is a God of justice. And He is so very much more.
I would rate this a G.

Naked and Confused
Revisado: 08-25-23
Premise: if someone is murdered, they wake up again in their home, albeit naked and slightly confused. Murders have essentially become an unlikely thing of the past. But with this loophole surrounding death, the occupation of "Dispatcher" is born. Turns out, being able to strategically plan on "waking up again" has its usefulness in some situations. For example, get someone to shoot you immediately following a crime, and you have the world's best escape plan.
I enjoyed this installment of The Dispatcher series.

Alexia Tarabotti, Lady Maccon, has settled into domestic bliss. Of course, being Alexia, such bliss involves integrating werewolves into London High society, living in a vampire's second best closet, and coping with a precocious toddler who is prone to turning supernatural willy-nilly. Even Ivy Tunstell's acting troupe's latest play, disastrous to say the least, cannot put a damper on Alexia's enjoyment of her new London lifestyle.

Well done, Emily Gray.
Revisado: 08-25-23
I'm confident Emily Gray's Audible reading added significantly to my enjoyment of this book, but Gail Carriger has not disappointed yet. Her quippy, witty, self-aware writing may not have deep substance, but it's just entertaining and fun. A bit like treacle tart...
That said, the abiding loyalty and firm commitment this husband and wife have for one another, teasing jabs aside, is completely refreshing and wholesome.
I'd rate this a PG-13 for adventurous danger, mild British swearing, and some adult themes such as sexual innuendo.

When Prudence Alessandra Maccon Akeldama ("Rue" to her friends) is bequeathed an unexpected dirigible, she does what any sensible female under similar circumstances would do: she christens it the Spotted Custard and floats off to India. Soon she stumbles upon a plot involving local dissidents, a kidnapped brigadier's wife, and some awfully familiar Scottish werewolves.

Pink and Blue Cotton Candy
Revisado: 08-25-23
I miss Emily Grey's narration, but Moira Quirk continues to do delightful justice. Gail Carriger's books have all been enhanced by listening to them on Audible. Not only does the dry, quippy, off-the-wall humor translate best while being read in sarcastic and airy tones, the narrators are able to deliver on this with aplomb.
The scene towards the end when Rue, Primrose, and Quensell are yelling back and forth from the Spotted Custard to the jungle floor while in the cross-fire of savage weremonkeys had me dying. It does occur to me that line sounds bonkers if you haven't read the book. But the casual side commentary about tea and annoying siblings whilst discussing life and death truly shined at its best being read out loud by someone with a fabulous British accent.
Again, this series is all fluff and nonsense. Cotton candy and Laffy Taffy. But...you better believe sometimes I enjoy sitting down with a bag of cotton candy from the county fair the size of my couch, and I eat the entire thing with gusto, and I'm NOT disappointed it didn't turn into vegetables half way down. Sometimes...we want cotton candy. It just better be good, freshly spun, and all pink and blue. None of that nasty purple stuff. Which this is. Pink and blue and freshly spun, that is.
I'd rate this a PG with some mild British slang in the mix.
