Historia
Eleven hundred and some years after the death of Christ, in the kingdom that had but recently begun to call itself England, I, Once Was Willem, rose from the dead to defeat a great evil facing the humble village of Cosham. The words enclosed herein are true. I speak of monsters and magic, battle and bloodletting, and the crimes of desperate men. I speak also of secret things, of that which lies beneath us and that which impends above.

Dark, Magical, and Full of Heart
Revisado: 03-25-25
Carey is at his best with this book! He's always been amazing at creative, dark, and simultaneously human stories (dont miss Girl with All the Gifts, Boy on the Bridge, and The Rampart Trilogy) but he's never gone this hard with the fantastical. I was dubious at first but this kept me glued to the very end. Love love love!

But when a faceless body with mysterious wounds washes up on the shores of the Porcupine River, he’s pulled deeper in than ever before. Not Cutters Best but Not bad!
Revisado: 12-07-22
Little Heaven is probably my favorite Nick Cutter novel. The Breach doesn't hit that same quality bar for me but the premise is interesting and the horror is compelling. I felt like the middle got rushed too much but all in all, definitely worth picking up!

Historia
When Mouse’s dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be? Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there’s more - Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather’s journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants...until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself.

A Fresh Voice in the Spook and Weird
Revisado: 02-02-22
I love spooky, gory, weird stories with a twist of delicious mystery. I live for a great reveal and it's absolute cake if character development gets in there too.
This book felt like fresh air being breathed into the New Weird genre. Its strange, spooky, morbid, mysterious. Surprisingly, it's also wryly humorous and deeply nuanced in how the characters think and react to the mind bending situation they find themselves in.
The narrator does a great job but her reading style DOES probably push that wry, sarcastic element farther than if I'd read this in paperback and imagined the dialog and tone for myself.
I loved the explinations and theories put forth in the book about what is actually going on. I felt very satisfied with the conclusion and am left looking for more to read by this author! Im told "The Twisted Ones" is also a good time...off to start that now!

Stranger Things-ish
Revisado: 05-09-21
I think the narrator did a good job handling the feeling of a highschool kids experience with strange creatures and gruesome deaths overtaking their town. In general, this has a good narrator, which probably kept me listening at times when I consided moving on to something else.
Overall, this felt horror-light but fun. Lots of blood, dismemberment, and lurking things in the woods but with a "the cops won't listen to the smarter than adults high-school kids" vibe. It's a little Stranger Things, a little King, and a dash of 80s slasher film.
I get that the author was trying to capture the highschool boy voice but the overall presentation had some unfortunate misogyny that felt like the author was trying to keep in check but just barely accomplishing it. The writing also gets too moment to moment with details like how far someone walks, or the nuances of everyones reaction to a single event or simply repeating the same information too many times in a failed attempt at building emotional connection. Ultimately, I felt it flattened out the impact of the major beats.
I think this is worth reading and is miles better than some similar stories Ive listened to here. It just wasn't five star fantastic, to me. Give it a shot, though, you might love it!
