Historia
With ailing family to support, Evie Sage's employment status isn't just important, it's vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn's most infamous Villain results in a job offer—naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don't find evil so attractive, Evie. But just when she's getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat . . . and not just the literal kind.

A good editor would make an incredible difference
Revisado: 03-18-24
I liked the story—it was interesting and enjoyable until errors repeatedly pulled me out of the flow. There were words that certainly seemed like they were mistranslated or selected at random from a thesaurus. There were words used to emphasize that this is a "historical" period piece—chalice, for example—when they did not need to be. The insistence on calling the main male character "The Villain," even after his name has been revealed, and he could be called by name or "Boss" or other options. I am finding this more and more in sci-fi or fantasy books, and it is really disappointing. What could be a great read is dragged down by completely fixable issues.

Historia
Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.... Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this wickedly clever new novel from John Grisham, the undisputed master of the legal thriller.

Historia
They're out there, under the salt - the bodies of German seamen who used to lie in wait at the mouth of the Mississippi for unescorted American tankers sailing from the oil refineries of Baton Rouge out into the Gulf of Mexico. As a child, Dave Robicheaux had been haunted by the sailors' images. Years later, Robicheaux, a detective with the New Iberia sheriff's office, finds himself and his family at serious risk, stalked for his knowledge of a watery burial ground by a mysterious man named Will Buchalter - a man who believes that the Holocaust was one big hoax.

Not what I thought - summary misleading
Revisado: 12-11-18
I thought this was going to be people eating food and talking about Twain and food. Instead, there is so much PC awareness that there is little real content. I know that the context of the time is important, but I think the context of then is more important than re-framing everything to the terms of now. Twain is always going to be uncomfortable now - can we accept that as a given and spend less time discussing why he is uncomfortable and more time on why his writing reflects his own inner debate and the debate of the country at the time?
The many many different voices were disconcerting as there was no real flow of time or place, who was talking, how that person was related to the overall concept...I kept getting lost.
I know I tried to listen to this in the last week of a university semester, a time of frantic activity in my world, but instead of being a relaxing way to unwind from work, I found myself irritated and stressed each time I listened. I will try to listen to this again, but this is NOT what I thought it was going to be.

A twist on the Sherlock Holmes, setting the idea on its head. Dr. Watson is the actual genius that tries to solve the cases, hampered and helped by Warlock Holmes, an odd man with odd friends. Warlock finds improbable solutions and imaginary problems in the realm of the supernatural. These books are hard to describe, but if you enjoy Sherlock Holmes and sly, slightly twisted humor, give these books a try.

Started off interesting, but I lost interest
Revisado: 11-13-17
I hit the point where I got tired of the main character whining. She kept making dicey choices, then complained about the consequences. I deal with teens all the time who do the same thing, so my tolerance level may be a bit low. I really wanted to like this, but by the end I kept thinking "hurry up and be over." While the premise is interesting, I will not be listening to others in the series.

Enraged, dismayed, devastated in turns
Revisado: 05-18-17
A little known chapter in American history, but a truly tragic example of the crimes against native peoples. I could only listen to a bit at a time as I got so angry about the condescension of the "whites" and the attitudes that really have not changed in over 200 years. The Dakota Pipeline is just the latest chapter in a story that this book drags into the limelight. There is no hiding from how ugly the history has been.
The mixed narrators emphasized the different stages of the case, but not all had the same volume and the pitches were hard to hear clearly sometimes unless I had the volume high.
The writing was sometimes a little purple, but it was very effective in making me angry, despairing, or disgusted. I admire some of the people who tried to get justice, but there were precious few of them.
A complicated story, told with heart and attention to detail that made it absolutely engrossing. Well worth the credit and the emotional wringer.

Revisado: 04-07-17
I loved these stories. I listened on a car trip and was entertained and interested without being overwhelmed by detail or stories that went on 200 pages too long. Interesting twists and turns, great narration, and great stories. I will be getting the next in the series.
