As a New England mother struggles to support her family in the wake of her husband's service in the Civil War, her four daughters struggle, too - caught between childhood dreams and the realities of burgeoning adulthood. For Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March, raised in integrity and virtue, negotiating the right path in life means making choices that will either narrow or expand their destinies.

Sweet story, saccharine performance
Revisado: 02-01-23
Always a sweet story to revisit, but the voices for the girls were a bit overly saccharine in an already sentimental story.

Historia
A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants can change their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters. Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement.

Good themes, but never got fully into it
Revisado: 02-28-21
I really appreciated the themes dealt with but just never got fully immersed in the narrative.

Historia
The valley is just 25 miles long from Napa in the south to Calistoga in the north. Highway 29 runs up the west side of the valley, with the Silverado Trail running parallel to the east, and dozens of small roads connecting the two. The bulk of the 400-plus wineries in the region are neatly gathered along these routes and in the surrounding hills, so you can easily visit any number in a day.

Would be better as a guidebook than as an audiobook.
Revisado: 02-04-21
There’s good information here for planning a trip, however, it would be more useful in the print format than as an audiobook. Also, the narrator pronunciation of many words is really off.

Historia
There are nearly 1,400 known varieties of wine grapes in the world - from altesse to zierfandler - but 80 percent of the wine we drink is made from only 20 grapes. In Godforsaken Grapes, Jason Wilson looks at how that came to be and embarks on a journey to discover what we miss. While hunting down obscure and underappreciated wines, he looks at why these wines fell out of favor (or never gained it in the first place), what it means to be obscure, and how geopolitics, economics, and fashion have changed what we drink.

A great read/listen for wine geeks
Revisado: 01-10-20
Really enjoyed this book. The narrator also managed to keep a potentially difficult subject engaging.
(However, I will note that a lot of the pronunciations for grapes names and wine terminology was off. Given that this is a book likely to appeal to a lot of wine geeks, it would be good to provide better direction in this area for titles like these.)

Historia
A modern classic, Housekeeping is the story of Ruth and her younger sister, Lucille, who grow up haphazardly, first under the care of their competent grandmother, then of two comically bumbling great-aunts, and finally of Sylvie, their eccentric and remote aunt. The family house is in the small Far West town of Fingerbone, set on a glacial lake, the same lake where their grandfather died in a spectacular train wreck and their mother drove off a cliff to her death.

Couldn’t get into it. Stiff narration.
Revisado: 11-26-18
I just couldn’t get into the story, but think that might’ve had to do w the narration. It often sounded stiff and mechanical. Wondered at times if it was actually automated.
