Cozy and comforting wither personal stakes that feel like they matter
Revisado: 02-12-24
A great cozy fantasy read. The protagonist is endearing my incompetent and equally driven to overcome her lack of real-world understanding. She is the sort of friend you want to keep forever: trustworthy and supportive with just the right amount of calling you out on your bullshit.

Historia
A bit of adventure and quick cash is all that good-natured drifter Anthony Cade is looking for when he accepts a messenger job from an old friend. It sounds so simple: deliver the provocative memoirs of a recently deceased European count to a London publisher. Little did Anthony suspect that a simple errand to deliver the manuscript on behalf of his friend would drop him right in the middle of an international conspiracy, and he begins to realize that it has placed him in serious danger.

Saves the racism for the last chapters
Revisado: 01-18-24
Read through this and loved it, as Agatha knows how to put together a good mystery. Finally, I thought, I found a Christie mystery that I could share with others.... Then in the closing minutes they stuffed in some racism and it's just so disappointing.

Picaresque with friends
Revisado: 07-14-23
The world is lush, the politics are complex, the enemies are all around... But mostly I am here for the trust, devotion and comraderie of the allies at the center of this story. Everyone wants friends who will turn the world upside down to save them, and this book makes you feel that bond.
Great reread as well, as you find more layers to uncover.

Historia
While the North prevailed in the Civil War, ending slavery and giving the country a "new birth of freedom," Heather Cox Richardson argues in this provocative work that democracy's blood-soaked victory was ephemeral. The system that had sustained the defeated South moved westward and there established a foothold. It was a natural fit. Settlers from the East had for decades been pushing into the West, where the seizure of Mexican lands at the end of the Mexican-American War and treatment of Native Americans cemented racial hierarchies....

Entirely upsetting
Revisado: 01-16-21
Cowboys were not all white men who loved their life on the plains. Jessie James is basically fiction. Davy Crockett surrendered.
Ugh.
So many institutions created for the benefit of white men. All of this is horrible and familiar and a perfect match for 2021, as the US watches the rise and fall of DJTs America. It is all in this book - his tactics are not new, his ideas are not new, his followers are not new.
Beyond all of this manufactured conflict I wonder just how much of our lives are actually run by the oligarchs who benefit from and feed into the right wing republican party

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Subtly different from the Netflix series
Revisado: 01-03-21
The major plot points and characters are the same, but this story is a little less pat and a little more human. It is a quick, easy and compelling read, and one thing that translated surprisingly well is the tension and excitement of her various chess battles. I am delighted with this and you will love it too. :)

Once you get past his bluff and cluster, the protagonist quickly grows on you. A nice mystery, well plotted... You will absolutely be ready to believe that it was impossible *and* that every member of the cast of characters could be The Killer. :)

Historia
Miracle Springs is a place of healing. Strangers flock there hoping that the natural hot springs, five-star cuisine, and renowned spa can cure their ills. And, if none of that works, they often find their way to Miracle Books, where, over a fresh-baked scone from the Gingerbread House bakery, they exchange their stories with owner Nora Pennington in return for a carefully chosen book. That's Nora's special talent: prescribing the perfect novel to ease a person's deepest pain and lighten their heaviest burden.

Not good.
Revisado: 11-30-20
This book is like a book full of obvious or clichéd metaphors, because it is a book full of obvious and clichéd metaphors. Ugh. If you don't like my opening sentence then avoid this book... It's all like that.
Every character has eyes that sparkle, hips that sashay, laughter that hits you like a chill mountain stream.
The central characters are your standard:
- 1 heart and soul, not perfect but not far from it
- 1 i-use-my-looks-as-a-weapon
- 1 good natured, smart, capable and incredibly naive
- 1 the other one that is there but who knows why
You know who the villains are when you meet them because they are also as plain as day.
All the men are dastardly ridiculous misogynists or incredible dreamboats who somehow have managed not to notice their own chiseled abs, strong jaw and perfect hairline. They don't know how handsome they are, and they bring a down-home aw-schucks attitude with them, along with their injured mother who they care for on their own and their rescue dog. Also they just moved into the neighborhood and they intuitively respect unspoken boundaries. Their gaze is full of longing and desperate hope or steely determination.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

It's all about the characters, and I only like one
Revisado: 09-18-20
I really, really tooth-achingly dislike Rachel on a personal level. Though she is a basically good person she is really just a pinball, believing unwavering in whatever is in front of her. She is closed minded, gently bigoted and just ugh.
Her kid is not a good human being yet, but his section shows interesting personal growth.
I liked the first character well enough, but it might have been singing my tune discussing an emotionally underdeveloped man in an early marriage struggling to cope with expectations and responsibilities.
Blargh. I wish I had heard this story in reverse... But I might not have ever made it through Rachel. Huh.
