Historia
When Dr. Louis Creed takes a new job and moves his family to the idyllic, rural town of Ludlow, Maine, this new beginning seems too good to be true. Yet despite Ludlow's tranquility, there's an undercurrent of danger that lingers...like the graveyard in the woods near the Creeds' home, where generations of children have buried their beloved pets.

Classic King
Revisado: 05-28-19
First of all, if you’ve seen the 1989 movie adaptation then you definitely have the majority of the book already under your belt. The 1989 film didn’t stray all that far from the original book, but there are some differences.
The book has the added benefit of introducing characters not seen in the movie, Norma Crandall for one, as well as enhanced background story and detail. For me that was well worth the listen.
As usual King does a fantastic job creating a character background and making the world of Ludlow, Maine seem real and tangible. The only fault I’d find, and it’s minor really, is the fact that the ending takes 85% of the book to arrive and is over pretty quickly. To me it seemed as though the story was drawn out through the middle and then compressed at the very end. Still, it’s a very entertaining ride and so I wouldn’t say I’m disappointed by the first 85% of the book in any way.
In summary, definitely worth a listen for the background detail. If you’ve seen the movie then you know the punch line pretty well yet the world that King brings to life is worth the visit.

Historia
The colossal scale of World War II required a mobilization effort greater than anything attempted in all of the world's history. The United States had to fight a war across two oceans and three continents - and to do so it had to build and equip a military that was all but nonexistent before the war began. Never in the nation's history did it have to create, outfit, transport, and supply huge armies, navies, and air forces on so many distant and disparate fronts. The Axis powers might have fielded better trained soldiers, better weapons, better tanks and aircraft.

Very scholarly work.
Revisado: 08-05-17
If you're interested in the details of what went on in America during the war years, this is the book for you. the narrator doesn't know how to pronounce several names and places and that can be distracting. He also seems very disinterested in the topic at times, as if he is just reading a technical manual. Otherwise very good.

Historia
At the outbreak of World War II, the United States was in no way prepared to wage war. Although the US declared war against Germany in December 1941, the country lacked the manpower, the equipment, and the experience it needed to fight. Even had an invasion force been ready, a successful assault on Nazi-occupied Europe could not happen until Germany's industrial and military might were crippled.

Rivetting account of the air war over Germany
Revisado: 12-18-16
It's hard to say that a story chronically the life and death struggle of service men in war is "entertaining" - that doesn't do them justice I feel. This is definitely a very researched account of what it was like to wage air battle in WW2. I highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in air combat, WW2 or just a great story about men achieving the impossible.
Also, you can't beat Robertson Dean for narration - he's the best there is.

Historia
Although the United States declared war against Germany in December 1941, a successful assault on Nazi-occupied Europe could not happen until Germany’s industrial and military might were crippled. The first target was the Luftwaffe—the most powerful and battle-hardened air force in the world. The United States Army Air Forces joined with Great Britain’s already-engaged Royal Air Force to launch a strategic air campaign that ultimately brought the Luftwaffe to its knees. One of the standout units of this campaign was the legendary 303rd Bomb Group—Hell’s Angels.

OK, but not great
Revisado: 11-16-16
The story is overall entertaining, but at times predictable. I felt that the characters were one dimensional and that the ending was rushed and sorta contrived.

Historia
A brilliant, authoritative, and fascinating history of America’s most puzzling era, the years 1920 to 1933, when the U.S. Constitution was amended to restrict one of America’s favorite pastimes: drinking alcoholic beverages. Okrent reveals how Prohibition marked a confluence of diverse forces, including the growing political power of the women’s suffrage movement and the fear of small-town, native-stock Protestants that they were losing control of their country to the immigrants of the large cities.

Historia
A richly detailed and dramatic account of one of the greatest achievements of humankind. At 9:32 A.M. on July 16, 1969, the Apollo 11 rocket launched in the presence of more than a million spectators who had gathered to witness a truly historic event. It carried Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Mike Collins to the last frontier of human imagination: the moon.

A pretty decent telling of Apollo 11
Revisado: 12-31-14
This book provides a fairly good account of the Apollo 11 moon landing with fairly good main character development (Aldrin, Collins and Armstrong).
I'd say that it can be a bit dry at times and you may find yourself a little bored during some sections, the last few chapters are quite good. If you haven't read Gene Kranz's "Failure Is Not An Option" I would encourage you to begin there as it's a much better telling of the entire NASA program from Mercury to Skylab and into today. I highly recommend it.
Overall, I'd say it's worth a credit.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....
