Historia
Should leaders be feared or loved? Can dictators give rise to democracy? Should rulers have morals or wear them like a mask? Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince puts forth unsettling questions like these, whose answers redefined centuries of political wisdom. But what does it really mean to be Machiavellian? These 24 lectures are more than just a close reading of one of the great books of Western history.

Not as good as Cook's course
Revisado: 07-15-22
William Cook's course "Machiavelli in Context" is a better introduction to this topic. But if you want to do two courses, Landon's offers some interesting information that Cook doesn't cover.

Historia
Between the birth of Dante in 1265 and the death of Galileo in 1642, something happened that transformed the entire culture of Western civilization. Painting, sculpture, and architecture would all visibly change in such a striking fashion that there could be no going back on what had taken place. Likewise, the thought and self-conception of humanity would take on a completely new aspect. Sciences would be born - or emerge in an entirely new guise.

Good storytelling, not profound analysis
Revisado: 03-17-22
The story of Renaissance Florence competently and memorably told. But Strathern is not a profound historian of ideas or art.

King John is familiar to everyone as the villain from the tales of Robin Hood - greedy, cowardly, despicable, and cruel. But who was the man behind the legend? Was he a monster or a capable ruler cursed by bad luck? In this new book, best-selling historian Marc Morris draws on contemporary chronicles and the king's own letters to bring the real King John vividly to life. John was dynamic, inventive, and relentless but also a figure with terrible flaws.

Historia
The Mabinogion, the earliest literary jewel of Wales, is a collection of ancient tales and legends compiled around the 12th and 13th century deriving from storytelling and the songs of bards handed down over the ages. It is a remarkable document in many ways. From an historical perspective, it is the earliest prose literature of Britain. But it is in its drama that many surprises await, not least the central role of King Arthur, his wife, Gwenhwyvar, and his court at Caerlleon upon Usk.

Historia
Aristotle's Metaphysics was the first major study of the subject of metaphysics - in other words, an inquiry into 'first philosophy', or 'wisdom'. It differs from Physics which is concerned with the natural world: things which are subject to the laws of nature, things that move and change, are measurable. In Metaphysics, the study falls on 'being qua being' - being insofar as it is being; the causes and principles of being, the causes and principles of substances.

soft white supremacism
Revisado: 07-04-20
The way Brownsworth describes Turks, Arabs, etc. as savage hordes really doesn't sit right. He makes Byzantium the guardian of all that is civilized, as if it wasn't the Muslims who preserved and advanced learning throughout the Middle Ages. In general the history is romanticized and there is no deep analysis of cause and effect. That said, he is good at retelling Byzantium's colorful stories and leaves you with many strong mental pictures.

Don't listen to the haters
Revisado: 09-25-19
This is an excellent series of lectures. i don't know why several of the reviews say that the contents are simplistic; they are not. It's true that the lecturer's ideas are often presented only in brief -- the course should probably be 50 percent longer -- but her observations are quite eye-opening.

Historia
Sophocles was born at Colonus, near Athens in about 496 BC and is considered to be one of the premier playwrights of Greek tragedy. His stories may have been filled with strife, but Sophocles himself was prosperous and came from a good family. It is said that he was handsome, wealthy, and a highly respected citizen of Athens. During his life, he wrote over 120 plays and was instrumental in how plays would eventually be performed, including the addition of stage props.
