Ever reliable Jussi

All the gang are back at Department Q and there’s the humor with Assad and the villain with revenge on the mind. The story is up to date with pandemic lockdowns and mask requirements making solving the crime and rescuing the victim in time that much more difficult. It sags a bit in the middle but it picks up pace soon enough. Don’t start this series with this one. Start at the beginning for full understanding of characters and the past

Making moral philosophy accessible, funny, relevant to today

Going through various philosophies sounds daunting if not dull but it is anything but here. Schur known for his show The Good Place explored the moral world humorously in that show which was the impetus of this book. Maybe his greatest contribution besides the humor is his distilling philosophy to a simple understandable form. He also adapts philosophical approaches to everyday moral decisions/questions like Do I really have to return the grocery cart back to its slotted area if it’s way over there?

Charming O.Henry like mysteries

As short stories should but may seem old-fashioned, these end as soon as we gather the solution to the crime. Tightly organized and often humorous, they are total entertainment. Even Diamond appears in one of them and the reader senses where his story fits into the Diamond series.

Moving and realistic

Men are not known for showing emotions but in this pub crawling saga Joe and Dave struggle with words and their truth comes out. For one night they become real friends again after years of separation. Unsentimental and very real about buried emotions

Better than the Polish film version

The ending and the Russian part do a better job in tying the loose ends. It takes until the end to find out the full extent of involvement in a serial killer’s murders at a summer camp in the woods, a camp for adolescents

Complex exciting thriller in an icy place

Well read and written, the story of Felicity Lloyd has surprises right up to the end. Its setting on South Georgia and encounters with glaciers adds to the thrill. But the real dilemma is in figuring out who is Felicity and some details about her supposed stalker Freddy are still bewildering at the end. Beautifully written, wonderful Irish characters

Based on Niall Williams’ past, this novel reminisces on inhabitants of a made up town in western Ireland, the narrator’s grandparents before the modern commodity of electricity. The coming of electricity is the main event but the mixture of humor, love and sadness plus the extraordinarily style are what makes this novel special. I didn’t want it to end

Good except having to get used to narrator

Simon Preeble is my favorite narrator for this series but after I got used to this narrator, I found this to be one of my favorite of the series. A woman up for murder charges with a young son not her own and the town against her — make for an almost impossible tangle Ian Rutledge has to untangle. Add to that the dead Hamish who haunts Rutledge — it is his fiancée who is charged with murder. Gripping story right up to the end.

Surprise Good Find

Having never read Harlan Cohen, I was amazed how good this was—full of twists and turns right up to the last moment and characters that the reader cared about. The story has to do with a sweet older daughter who on campus is introduced to drugs and becomes a drug addict and her parents’ trying to find her. A second set of characters are hit killers with a list of victims and the slow revelation of why they are targets. The two stories come together of course.
