Very Cute Story

A cute regency story. A bit less cliche than others, and still has the easy, happy feels.

Ending didn't feel right; possible spoilers.
Revisado: 04-01-23
I just like stories, I don't need literary genius to be entertained. That said, I do need a story to pick a lane so that I can set an expectation. I can only accept unrealistic endings to books that were unrealistic to start. I thought most of this story was charming and that the characters were extremely lovable. Towards the end the author really starts to play up the drama, which is great, but if you're going to give me real problems, I need conflict resolution that matches. You can't give me a serious issue like a father who is a controlling, abusive tyrant with money and power and then end it so simply. The father just has too much at his disposal for everything to work out as written. I was left with the feeling that the book ended too quickly, that if the characters woke up tomorrow, the whole plan would have fallen apart and THEN the real, solid solutions would have been sorted out, but the author didn't want to play it out that far. Like I said, it was charming, but the end really just kind of left me irritated. The narrator did great, she always does.

My heart broke...
Revisado: 11-30-22
This book was beautiful and sad and horrible and heartwarming and overall a very gripping story. I was completely invested in it and was so angry at many of the events that I ended up going down a google rabbit hole... Then the truth hit me like a cinder block to the back. I did not know that basis of the book lay in true events. My heart sunk. I got angry, I cried, I hated humanity, I had to pull myself together just to finish. This story needed to be told, and it is done so justly, in all its horrors and sadness. The book ultimately ends with a sense of peace and helps one to remember that we can rise above our past, but the path to that conclusion will put your heart through the wringer. I HIGHLY recommend the listen, but please emotionally prepare yourself.

Historia
In a remote corner of early Victorian England, where traditional practices remain untouched by time, Bathsheba Everdene stands out as a beacon of female independence and self-reliance. However, when confronted with three suitors, among them the dashing Sergeant Troy, she shows a reckless capriciousness that threatens the stability of the whole community. Published in 1874, and an immediate best seller, Far From the Madding Crowd established Thomas Hardy as one of Britain's foremost novelists.

I have long loved the story, newly love the narrator.
Revisado: 11-30-22
There are a couple hiccups in the narration that were missed in editing, but very few; certainly not enough to make me downgrade my review. Jamie Parker does an outstanding job. His voice is pleasant, his characters are outstanding and he reads the female dialog without making them sound shrill or ridiculous. He did wonderful and I will listen to this audio version again and again. Almost makes me sad that I probably won’t pick up my pretty hardcover edition anymore, lol.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

I wish they would have Rosamund Pike read all Jane’s books
Revisado: 11-21-22
Jane Austen’s deserved praise of this book has been established long ago. It’s all things lovely, humorous and heartwarming. That established, this review is for Rosamund Pike. Her narration voice is warm and calming and she never mixes up and accidentally reads dialog in the wrong characters voice. That’s hard to do. Often when women read for a male characters voice and more often when men read for a female characters voice, the inflection they use comes out annoying, sometimes somewhat insulting. Even the ridiculous characters could be listened to with the deserved humor but without unnecessary obnoxiousness. I would love to have an Audible version of Rosamund reading all the books Austen wrote. She’s an outstanding narrator.

Good, but some tough narration points
Revisado: 11-13-22
The narrator is a very good reader and does perfectly fitting voices for many of the characters, but some of the voice inflections she did for certain characters were horrid, especially for men. Like Thorp for instance… her voice there was nasal and difficult to listen to. She mostly did it for characters that were obnoxious or ridiculous by design, but oh that voice…I had to jump past some parts just to get by. Thankfully, I’ve read the book, so I know what I’m skipping, but if you haven’t, you’re going to have to suffer the grind of getting through. Even annoying characters have to be able to be listened to without wincing or it destroys the whole listen.

Had Jane Austen lived to complete Sanditon, it would have been as treasured as her other novels. In the half-finished masterpiece, Austen fashions one of her classic heroines: Charlotte Heywood. The surviving fragment also sets the story well on its path as Charlotte begins an adventure to Sanditon where a full cast of characters becomes intertwined in various intrigues.

It was alright…
Revisado: 11-12-22
I did like what Jane wrote. It was excessively wordy, but she died before she could edit it, so I’ll never hold that against her. I tried really hard to be objective when listening to the second part of the novel written by Shapiro. But, she took one of the characters from a bit of a bumbling, misguided fool in unrequited love (as Jane wrote him) to a suave, woman-juggling rake who actually has the affection of the woman who was supposed to be so off-put by him. That was my first irritation, but since he wasn’t a character I liked, it was no real issue for me, it just seemed inconsistent. But the whole ending of the book is almost a separate story. The parts about Catherine (the heroine) are kind of glossed over. She almost feels like a side character. Her whole relationship with her suitor isn’t one of the real focuses and really only covers a couple chapters. The relationship seemed quick, forced and haphazard. And then over! The whole last hour of the book is explaining of other story lines that could have been more palatable if they were slowly woven in rather than in a rush to explain at the end.

Rosamund Pike did an outstanding narration
Revisado: 10-31-22
It is well read, good pacing and she did the characters personalities justice. The story is a stand alone matter, Jane Austen is her own level of wonderful as a novelist. I’ve always loved this book, and Rosamund read it beautifully.
