Historia
“Can I kiss you?” It was two months before the world premiere of Juno, and Elliot Page was in his first ever queer bar. The hot summer air hung heavy around him as he looked at her. And then it happened. In front of everyone. A previously unfathomable experience. Here he was on the precipice of discovering himself as a queer person, as a trans person. Getting closer to his desires, his dreams, himself, without the repression he’d carried for so long. But for Elliot, two steps forward had always come with one step back.

I didn't really like this book - but not because
Revisado: 08-01-24
This book makes me sad, so when I am rating it now, I can't say I loved it, or it was great -but that doesn't' mean it isn't great. I admired this author. I remember all the hype about Juno and Really enjoyed Whip it- the roller derby film- that was surprising. I was Twice as surprising when I found out quite shockingly that the Award winning actress has changed dramatically. I was very curious to understand how this all happened. As I don't really follow gossip magazines/celebrity news, I missed the lead in and wanted to know what caused this dramatic change. I really LOVEd hearing the stories about Hollywood and behind the scenes, but the personal life of this performer has been very challenging and that is what leaves me with the sadness. I am pledged to be a better ally so that people who feel this way are treated with more respect, accepted as they are. Knowing how few people can be accepted as they are always makes me feel very sad. What Ellen had to put up with for costume fittings and such, the mold Ellen was forcibly squeezed into- that this performer didn't have a place to be accepted is hurtful. I hope that Elliot finds happiness, but naturally this story is essentially the middle, it is Why this person needed to make changes to feel comfortable and not be forced into costumes and situations that don't feel right - but how Elliot's life changes we won't yet know. I hunger for a happy ending and this story is far from over.

This book Really Helped me
Revisado: 08-01-24
I am a newly married author with a newborn and I found this story EXTREMELY relatable. It made me feel better about the marital difficulties I am dealing with, and hopeful for the future, as we all know what Harriet Beecher accomplished. I enjoyed learning more about her family.

It's a fun read, surprising, but cliche
Revisado: 08-01-24
The voice performances are what make this interesting. It's futuristic and the comedy is pretty good, but I can't say it really made me think, it was just a fun way to pass the time, likely highly forgettable

A little too predictable
Revisado: 12-05-23
I liked the opening and the characters but didn't really feel motivated to finish when near the end. story lost some momentum into predictability after the puppies were born. But I quite enjoyed it up till then

Historia
In the mid-1950s, the House Un-American Activities Committee began investigating the communist influence in the entertainment industry. This searing docudrama from actual transcripts of the hearings reveals how decent people were persuaded to "name names", and the steep price paid by those who refused.

Historia
Kevin Pace is working on a painting that he won't allow anyone to see: not his children, not his best friend, Richard, not even his wife, Linda. The painting is a canvas of 12 feet by 21 feet (and three inches) that is covered entirely in shades of blue. It may be his masterpiece or it may not; he doesn't know or, more accurately, doesn't care. What Kevin does care about are the events of the past.

You will need to concentrate to follow this story. it switches abruptly from characters in three different countries. So it's easy to loose your sense of place/time. But when you're ready, there are a lot of interesting surprises in this story. I really like the ending

It's essentially an intro to film class, which I took in college years ago. Same films there with few additions. I really LOVED the section of Special Effects. I love film so I think it's neat to have a sort of pocket guide to the best films of all time. There is not a big difference between this version and other versions.

I can mostly say I enjoyed the book and would appreciate learning it more. there are diverse voices to keep it interesting. natural breaks. but if you can't handle a college level sociology class you might want to skip this. it's more academic than jokes. bur it does provide plenty to think on.. especially for anyone planning to study humor. lots of interesting anecdotes
