Revisado: 02-12-25
This is not my first Mel Robbins audiobook, but it may be my favorite. It's not really new or groundbreaking, but it's presented conversationally with examples from her life as well as studies conducted. It all boils down to YOU CONTROL YOU. Let other people do what they do and think what they think. Recommend for those seeking personal growth and motivation.

Among the best audiobooks I've heard in 2024. Fun
Revisado: 10-24-24
Funny and informative. Who can't use a little help talking to strangers? Practical guide to the do's and don't's of small talk with personal stories and advice from experts like Malcolm Gladwell and Amy Poehler.
The casual conversational style plays more like a podcast, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Historia
If you've ever worked in customer service (or any job, really), you know that everyone else—the customer, the boss, the company—is always right, and never the employee. Well, lucky for you, the "Angry Retail Guy" is more furious—and funnier—than ever in this hilariously unhinged guide to all the things we wish we could say out loud at work . . . without getting fired. In The Customer Is Always Wrong, you'll laugh (and maybe cry) at this rant-filled, illustrated attack on all the frustrating things that suck about work.

All Scott's funny TikToks --- in audiobook form!
Revisado: 09-20-24
Read by the author-- because we wouldn't have it any other way. If you've been following his angry retail videos, you've heard these before, but they hold up well. Applying for jobs, interviewing for jobs, working the jobs and quitting. He covers it all from the perspective of a guy weary of the whole process and all the accompanying BS.
I found myself missing the trademark music that goes with the rants and do have to say they work better in little chunks. Hour after hour of straight up anger and ranting can be a bit of a grind, but it is funny and definitely worth checking out.

Historia
Henry Winkler, launched into prominence as “The Fonz” in the beloved Happy Days, has transcended the role that made him who he is. Brilliant, funny, and widely regarded as the nicest man in Hollywood (though he would be the first to tell you that it’s simply not the case, he’s really just grateful to be here), Henry shares in this achingly vulnerable memoir the disheartening truth of his childhood, the difficulties of a life with severe dyslexia, the pressures of a role that takes on a life of its own, and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you.

You'll learn a lot about the guy behind The Fonz
Revisado: 01-16-24
You'd be hard pressed to find a celebrity autobiography as engaging as this one. Humble, gracious and always honest about himself and his fame, Henry makes you feel like you could be friends with him as soon as you meet. The book doesn't work without his narration. These books are always better when told by the actual person. When his run as The Fonz ended, he had to pivot into TV producing and shares some good stories from that. Two Fonzie thumbs up. Ayyy.

Smooth and easy to listen to essays on the stuff we all go through in life. While not gut-bustingly funny, these are charming observations and Tom is very honest about his past failures and foibles. Being a veteran stand up really his him naturally deliver the words clearly with all the right emphasis. Think Seinfeld meets Chicken Soup for the Soul.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Got me through a long road trip. Just ok.
Revisado: 07-29-23
Sadly this did not live up to the hype. It wasn't bad and probably would have made a great seven hour book. Unfortunately it was 11 hours.
There was a lot of detail and explanation that just went on and on. You kept waiting for one immature character to grow up, and did did a little I suppose.
The voice acting was the highlight. I enjoyed the Scottish brogue of a character as well as the octopus. He offered a unique perspective, yet I couldn't fully suspend disbelief about this human-like animal, while the rest of the book was based in reality.
So it was good enough to finish, yet not quite enough to give hearty recommendations to friends.

Historia
For decades, wrestling was shrouded in secrecy. It had larger-than-life personalities, bone-crunching physicality and jaw-dropping theatrics, but backstage, it was an industry devoid of outsiders. Then in 1999, after working together on a special for MTV, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson turned to 26-year-old television writer Brian Gewirtz and asked, “You ever consider writing for WWE?” That question, and its answer, would have a profound effect on both of their lives for years to come. There's Just One Problem is a story about perseverance, tenacity, and steel chairs.

The stories are funny and it never gets boring. I finished this in two days.
I just love Brian's self-deprecating humor and his tales of working for Vince McMahon. How do you keep a straight face when your boss is ranting about giraffes being weak for being so big and eating plants?
I read all the reviews about the bad narration but it was totally fine. He messed up two or three names but it wasn't a big deal for me.
I would listen to a sequel today if he wrote one.

Historia
Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job.

"I don't cut corners- I clean them." -Molly
I haven't listened to a fiction audiobook in a while and this one just hit the spot. Such a unique protagonist- you have to figure out what's going on based on information she gives you. I can picture someone like Ellie Kemper playing the role of Molly. You root for her victories and facepalm her blunders. I finished this in a few days. Great narration and clever writing. There is one twist that's quite happily convenient, but you go with it anyway.
Check into the Regency Grand Hotel for a visit. You be pleasantly surprised.

Just Oral History podcast read by voice actors
Revisado: 01-26-22
This seems like an unnecessary audiobook as it already exists as a podcast by Brian Baumgartner called An Oral History of The Office. Only on that one you can hear the actual people giving their thoughts. For this they went through the trouble of casting voice actors to read their parts. So the guy who played Toby is voiced by Bronson Pinchot. Yet Brian recreates his part of the conversation. The whole endeavor is bizarre to me. Recommended if you've never heard the stories, but why waste money or a credit when it exists for free on Spotify?

A grief memoir about people you don't know
Revisado: 01-17-22
Cecily is one of my favorite SNL performers, She is a talented actress. Unfortunately, that doesn't translate well to book form. What makes for a good essay (apparently this was inspired by one) doesn't always make a compelling memoir. It's really just journal entries from during Covid. Descriptions of her AirB&B, not enjoying Zoom meetings, starting a vegetable garden. I know the topic was about her cousin and grief, but I wanted more about being on SNL and that life. There just HAS to be some cool wild and crazy stories to offset the sadness and depression. Again, Cecily sounds like a wonderful, caring, thoughtful person dealing with depression and other issues, but the book is just rambling day to day life journal entries from the first year of Covid. There just isn't anything that stands out worthy of recommending here.
