Mixed Feelings.
Revisado: 07-10-24
I'm a little disappoint honestly.
Not with the writing quality or story itself, but with the length.
9 hours is less than half the first book. That in itself would be a deal breaker, but an hour a half of time is dedicated to four back-to-back subchapters that do nothing besides list out a bunch of cards. As well as a small bit of perspective in the beginning.
Take that out and it's more like 7 and 1/2 hours. 8 hours is usually my cut off for what I'm willing to spend a credit on.
No matter how good the book is.
Also the ending, while I won't say anything about it, how it ended made it feel like half a book already. Especially compared to how the first book flowed.
All and all, it feels like I bought a half finished book.

When the System came to Earth, technology failed, monsters appeared, and billions died as humans were inducted into the game-like physics the System enforced. Unfortunately for the System, not all humans were on Earth. Some scattered postbiological individuals decided to push it back, and embarked on a decade-long crusade to eliminate the System from Earth.

Smash the Bobiverse and a system apocalypse together and you'll get an idea of what this book's about.
The ideas and concepts it introduces are interesting and compelling.
Guy isn't perfect. He makes plenty of mistakes, but in the end it is only constraints is time and morality.

So bizarre.
Revisado: 03-26-24
It's pretty much an entirely different story. Sure, it's in the same framework. Some of the same characters are there, but otherwise? The tone has shifted so drastically, that it's jarring.
Most of the book focuses on a different MC entirely, while the old MC has like a side story with an arranged marriage.
There are so many philosophical questions, and strangely insistent lines of thought I'd think the Author has some sort of complex with the idea of God.
When the end rolled around, I could barely follow, understand, or care.
The Author goes to great lengths to ensure you understand how pathetic, insight, and ultimately meaningless mortal life is.
I'm not sure how the author expected to make me care about the ending of a story that belittled existence.
Sure, it gets smothered by the happy ending feeling stuff, but that doesn't erase the 8+ hours of ragging on how horrible humanity is I had to endure to get there.

As usual I have mixed feeling about these books.
Revisado: 03-17-24
I'll start with the good. World building is great. Always had been. The narration is still great. The magic systems in play are intricate and well designed for what they are. In fact I'd go far as to say that the magic systems design is the best part of the story. It's why I've come back dispite my issues.
Now, for the issues. The writing style is a disjointed and confusing mess, littered with plot holes, albeit small ones. As and example that is repeated in every book so far, the author sets up a scene with a group of characters, a really important and high tension scene, THEN rewinds time and goes to another group of characters and painstakingly describes everything up to them showing up to help the first group. BUT WAIT, then we rewind time AGAIN and go back to the first group and see what they have been doing since the time doesn't exactly match up between these 2 groups. sometimes there's even a 3rd group. THEN you'll get multiple perspectives from each group at different points in the timeline. And that's not even including the paragraph ls and paragraphs of painstaking explanation about abilities, thoughts, feelings, how much damage the environment is taking, ect.
By the time the fight is actually over barely a handful of minutes has passed in the books world, but it's easily been 10-20 chapters for me. It's insane. Honestly I'm mentally exhausted by the end, any excitement or anticipation I had is gone, and I just want to take a break from listening.

Your a madman. I love it.
Revisado: 02-19-24
For most of the book it was kind of so so for me.
Not because it was bad, but because it was another beginning. I've had to suffer through teenagers fumbling along their beginning journey and stuff like this hundreds of times at this point.
It can get a bit hard to force myself to sit through it. Joey though managed to at least keep my interest.
What really set this apart from most of the other books in this genre that I've read, is that absolutely phenomenal ending.
I won't spoil anything, but I am seriously hyped for the next book. It's a month away as of writing this review, but that wait is going to suck.

Third time's the charm. Real treating 1 star.
Revisado: 02-15-24
This is the third time I've tried to make a review. We'll see if it sticks this time. I'll be turning it down from what I did before in an effort to make sure the review isn't deleted. The main character is so incredibly bad. In every way shape and form you can think of. He's whiny. He's dumb. He's pathetic. He's a simp. He doesn't learn from mistakes unless he's literally killed because of them. It hurts me physically to continue listening. I was hoping he had learned anything whatsoever from the first book, but no.

What an amazing cluster F###
Revisado: 11-20-23
the amount of moving parts in this book was quite frankly ridiculous. I like to imagine the author had one of those cork boards with all the red yarn and stuff all around his room trying to figure out this ending.
It was satisfying, no doubt, it was just a lot.
I personally really liked what the last echo turned out to be.
I certainly wouldn't mind if the story continued on, but I understand that the author may need to break from this series.
It was hard enough to understand everything just reading it, I can't imagine that amount of hours and thought that went into actually writing it.

MC is dumb as a bag of bricks
Revisado: 11-09-23
Guy never thinks anything through. Can't make any sort of league in logic to figure out things that happen to him. Things that I see coming will ahead of time. The only thing surprised me was the regression.
Guy is a sad sack with a hero complex, and goes about being a 'hero' in the most inefficient and incompetent way he can possibly manage.
He can't think father ahead than the nose on his face. Not once for he ever think of plan on case he regressed again. or really plan ANYTHING. He's so infuriating. The story could have been interesting. The world building sure was, but this kind of protagonist ruined the experience for me.

i liked it, though there were a few annoyances.
Revisado: 08-09-23
First, I found it annoying this entire thing could have been avoided of he had either talked to his dad anytime in the WEEK he was ignoring his choices. or waited even 10 seconds before making his choice. If the scene didn't happen practically instantly after his choice it would have been easier to accept, but as it was, it felt too scripted. I realize it's a book, but it's not supposed to feel like an embellished play.
Next, having a long preview of the next book at the end of this one. Normally that's fine, but for books this short, it feels more like a tactic to inflate the run time, since a lot of people won't buy a book that's only 5 hours and change. the preview was 37 minutes. I certainly wouldn't have bought it. I almost didn't, even a 6h and change.

I've only given a few five-star reviews
Revisado: 07-06-23
It is exceedingly rare that a book is ever good enough to justify a five-star review from me.
I have more than a thousand books and maybe three or four of them tops is five star Worthy.
This book is absolutely fascinating. I don't know if I really need to say much more.
I never lost interest. I identified with the main characters frustrations. I felt happy when something went her way. The concepts technology, and history were a joy to hear about, even if the contents weren't exactly happy most of the time.
All and all, if you can't sympathize with her, I'm not sure you have much empathy.
