Revisado: 02-19-25
I’ve listened to all of the Joe Pickett series and enjoyed them despite the improbability of the murderous situations he always gets in but this one was far too preachy. I was getting flashbacks to “Atlas Shrugged”. I ended it with 3 plus hours left and on to the next one. Don’t judge the series by this book!

On an island lives a boy called Peter and his band of merry lost boys, young forever. That is unless they get sick or killed by pirates or eaten by crocodiles or unless - inexplicably - they grow old. For some of them do grow old, and nobody knows why. One of these boys is called Jamie, and he was the first boy that Peter ever brought to the island. Jamie's lived there for longer than he can remember, and it's not all fun and games.

I could not finish it. With 17 hours (about half) left I just stopped. Purchased as boxed set at great price, not able to return it but that's ok. I like the author but this story about a decimated country complicated by nuclear fallout and a bunch of morons playing both the good guys and the bad guys it's just bad. Narrator is very good.

I loved this trilogy
Revisado: 08-12-24
I added the first book to my library because I love George Guidall's narraration. I listened to the next 2 because the first book was so good! These 3 books span about 80 years of tales of a small (sparse?) family in the American southwest. The central character from which all the stories branch out is the least likable character in the series. There's plenty of tension, lots of scraping to get by, some happiness a couple of (SPOILER ALERT) special horses that die (end spoiler alert) and no end of depictions of ranch life and the progress, regression and beauty of the place. The beauty, serenity, satisfaction, hard work, reward, pride, danger, violence, disappointment, heartbreak and happiness in primitive, practically dry ranching is mind boggling. I would have given up many times under these conditions! The cast of characters are fleshed out and mostly likeable.

Overall ok
Revisado: 07-18-24
I don’t write reviews on books that I think are bad so to me this wasn’t poorly written and it wasn’t a bad story but it should have the disclaimer that there’s a lot of violence and sexual violence towards boys, very young boys. About halfway through I figured out who the criminal was and even though I like long books, even very long books, this was 4 hours too long, I wanted it to be over.

“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

Really good collection of stories
Revisado: 07-13-24
A surprising follow up to Cujo was so creepy and good, an alien story was suspenseful and engaging (I’m not into robots or aliens), a story with a happy ending (!!), lots of Covid mentions which may end up seeming “dated” but all around very entertaining.

Historia
Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of clothes and less than $200. The next anybody heard from her, this genteel, farm-reared, 67-year-old great-grandmother had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. And in September 1955, atop Maine's Mount Katahdin, she sang the first verse of "America, the Beautiful" and proclaimed, "I said I'll do it, and I've done it."

Historia
Emma London never thought she had anything in common with her grandmother Genevieve London. The regal old woman came from wealthy and bluest-blood New England stock, but that didn't protect her from life's cruelest blows. Genevieve rose from the ashes of grief and built a fashion empire that was respected the world over, even when it meant neglecting her other son. When Emma's own mother died, her father abandoned her on his mother's doorstep. Genevieve took Emma in and reluctantly raised her - until Emma got pregnant her senior year of high school.

Fragile, obsessive, frightened parenting
Revisado: 05-04-24
I don’t leave bad reviews so I just want to share in case someone else is averse to this subject. I did not like this book based on the theme of people whose only identity is being a parent or a child. It’s not poorly written and the “story” (a group of thin stories of multiple generations of regret, failure, success, sadness and happiness) is fine, I just would not have invested so many hours in listening to a book about being a parent.

Sad, tragic, sick, real…
Revisado: 04-27-24
This book is well written and presented chapter by chapter in each character’s voice. The subject matter is disturbing-a young adult man “falling in love” with an 8 year old girl and their developing “friendship” and relationship and all the criminality, trials and tribulations that unfold. The book is suspenseful and you somehow, bafflingly, end up rooting for them. It’s explicit in places and sexual throughout.

If Joe and Vicky had known what relocating to a tiny mountain village in Andalucía would really be like, they might have hesitated. They can have no idea of the culture shock in store for them...no idea they'll become reluctant chicken farmers and own the most dangerous cockerel in Spain...no idea they'll help capture a vulture and be rescued by a mule. Will they stay, or will they return to the relative sanity of England?

They are living the mid-life I dreamed I would have. The idea of escaping and living minimally, frugally but still busy is delightfully depicted in this sweet book.
