After we put our recycling in the collection bin, we tend to forget about it and assume that if will be handled responsibly. Unfortunately, that is not always true. This book gives in-depth, first-hand information about the end-point of plastic, electronic and other "recyclable" materials (including ships!). However, the book could use some heavy editing, as the author frequently goes too far down a rabbit hole.

I always enjoy May Roach's books and this one is no exception. My only suggestion is to include the footnotes in the body of the narration to keep them in context.

It was fun to revisit some of the characters from earlier books, but Hiassen's overuse of profanity quickly became tiring. I know he can do better. Mr. Brick's narration was good, but he should not attempt accents.

I hate stories where the main character lies to the reader. it's a cheap plot trick.

A Great Yarn

I whole-heartedly agree with the positive reviews of this book. It is a wonderful story of strong characters during a wild time in south Florida history. One of the reviews said that part three could stand on its own as a novel. That is true, but it is so much richer if you have the background from parts one and two. The language is pretty rough, but is entirely in character.

One note about the narration, though: if you primarily listen in the car, be prepared to adjust the volume frequently. The narrator tends to let his voice drop to a whisper, then comes back full-force in the next phrase, so you end up increasing the volume to hear the soft parts, then turning it down again to protect your hearing. The recording engineer should have used more audio compression to keep the dynamic range to a comfortable level.

Too much profanity

If the profanity was edited out of this book, it would probably be a couple of hours shorter. I honestly do not see that all of the F-bombs add anything to the story. The narrator does a good job and, thankfully, does not try to give all of the characters a Maine accent.

Listen to the sample before buying this one

I think that this one is probably a better to read than to hear. The first half of the story is good, especially if you have no idea what it is about. By the time you get to the second half, you are pretty tired of the narrative style and just want to get to the end. Listen to a sample before you click the "Add to cart" button. Seriously, listen to the sample, then decide if you can handle that voice for over 10 hours.

So-so

Any sympathy you may have developed for Rusty in "Presumed Innocent" is quickly destroyed in "Innocent". You realize what a poor excuse for a person he really is. This sequel is too long, too wordy and the ending is unsatisfying. Also, the first part of the story jumps around in time quite a bit. While this is not much of a problem when reading a book, it does make an audiobook harder to follow. I would not recommend this book unless you are a die-hard Scott Turow fan.

Narration is important

Total

Revisado: 05-06-10

I listened to the Tull version of book 1, "Master and Commander", before trying Simon Vance for book 2. Even though the Tull recording is of lower technical quality, often sounding like it was recorded on a cellphone, his voicing is superior to Vance. In the Vance version, I can't help visualizing Stewie from "Family Guy" when Stephen Maturin is speaking. Also, the female voicings remind me of Monty Python sketches. Sorry about all this narration talk, but it is very important to the overall experience. I love the story.
