Ever so relevant - Ever so haunting and mysterious
Revisado: 02-27-19
A classic not to be missed by anybody with an interest in the duality of man, dynamics of perhaps psychopathy, and even if you just harbor a keen willingness to dwell upon human behavior: listen to this remarkable piece of story by the renowned Robert Louis Stevenson. Excellent performance by Richard Armitage. Listen to it and see...if you perhaps even know someone who resembles Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde ;)

Historia
Philippe Girard shows how Toussaint Louverture transformed himself from lowly freedman into revolutionary hero as the mastermind of the bloody slave revolt of 1791. By 1801, Louverture was governor of the colony where he had once been a slave. But his lifelong quest to be accepted as a member of the colonial elite ended in despair: he spent the last year of his life in a French prison cell. His example nevertheless inspired anticolonial and Black nationalist movements well into the 20th century.

The complexity of abolition
Revisado: 01-21-18
The early fights for freedom from slavery was turbulent, complex and full of opposition, just like the character Toussaint L’ouverture himself. However you twist and turn and maybe even criticize his attempt to end slavery, this book illustrates so well how complicated it was to achieve his goal. Nobody had done it before and as so well described, the forces and tug of war of economy, freedom and energy needed at the fields wasn’t simple to gain. Just like now, slavery in the agriculture is still used and the economy is still demanding it in some way or another, maybe there are some hints to freedom in his achievements? This book also made me want to go visit all the historic sites of Toussaint including Haiti, as well as motivated me to continue to raise awareness about how slavery officially ended yet is still continuing. I’d read this again!

Tears, recognition & encouragement
Revisado: 03-20-17
Anyone concerned about human and civil rights ought to read this book. Getting to know the story of Correa Scott King brought such powerful emotions. Deep tears but also plenty of empowering thoughts I recognized within myself and within current struggles of humanity. She was a person beyond Martin Luther King and helped advance society on many levels. Read it!

The history that mustn't be ignored
Revisado: 02-07-17
Several times during this story I cried, my breath stopped and I had to repeat to make sure I heard it correctly. A piece of American history that everyone claiming to be educated folks need to reflect on. How much have we evolved as human species since way back when this took place? It is a very topical story as we still face times of deep injustice to too many fellow human beings. Listen to it! Read it!
