Annoying MMC narrator..

I very rarely dislike male narrators. Until now. Ugh, he practically ruined the book with his painful performance.

Ruined by the Narrator

I sincerely wish that authors would stay away from Lacy Laurel as a main narrator. I bought this book only because of the author and the cheating trope without paying any attention to the narrator. The disappointment I felt when I heard Lacy's voice was crushing... I spent a good 15 minutes debating whether I should just return it but ultimately gave it a shot. I was hoping at least for dual narration but I'm on chapter 13 with no relief in sight. I'm returning it anyway.

Her male portrayals are cringe! Especially the male antagonists who are given a voice that sounds very close to petulant Steve Urkel.

I will avoid all Lacy-led narrated audiobooks in the future no matter the author or the trope.

Second Book And Still Terrible

There are so many things wrong with this story. It's unoriginal in the worst way. I'm not against a particular trope or plot devise or theme being done repeatedly as long as its done well. But this is a lazy attempt at copying Hunger Games and The Selection. The fmc is an idiot who isn't sure if she wants to be strong or perceptive. Nearly everytime I think she's going to stop being a wimp or aghast she disappoints.
The narration is worse but I expected it to be terrible. She's the author and I hoped for a more nuanced take and that her familiarity with the characters would at least make for a decent narration. Not a chance. She mispronounced several of her own words, inserted weird pauses/breaks and alot more. This book/series is garbage. Thankfully, I got my credits back.

The Whinge is Strong in this one..

I despise a weak and whinging MFC. Tessa was overbearing and a damsel. Everytime I thought she would get a backbone she disappointed me. This book had no business being 24 hours long because it was a slog! Virtually nothing happened until the last hour! I'll not be spending a credit on the sequel.

please take the mic from Lacy Laurel!

I'm astounded that Lacy Laurel is an actual narrator. Her narrations ruin every book I've bought that she worked on. The only great thing about this one is that it was dual and I at least didn't have to listen to her throughout 100% of this book. Her male voices are laughable. It sounds like the exaggerated voice you make when you're trying to be intentionally facetious and mean. Bad narration ruined this book, which to be honest, wasn't that great even without narration.

I really tried to rally

I'm probably one of the few who dislikes Hollie Jackson's voice in this narration. I'm probably annoyingly picky about which narrators I like or prefer so my dislike is just mine. The guy seriously sounds like Kumail Nanjiani and that's distracting as hell so this whole thing is a huge no and cnf for me.

Lacy Laurel needs to never narrate anymore audiobooks. Ever!! She really ruined what could've been a good angsty read. Her Kyle voice sounded like a Big Mouth character. Ugh!!

It took a bit for me to get into it but once I did, I was hooked. It could've been great if not for the end. The psych out weakened Verity's character unnecessarily.

Angsty Sexy Goodness

So far I've never been disappointed with anything Penelope Douglas has written and this is certainly was better than I expected. I've resisted this theme for a while because I thought it'd be way too cheesy but now I think I'm missing out on some gems.
While Andrew Eiden's narration was good, Jennifer Mack's was superb as always. She should narrate all the books.

So-so story, nothing special. Muffy Newton/Erin Mallon's voice annoys me as always. Her voice makes my throat hurt by proxy and it gets difficult for me to not skip her chapters.
