I loved this historical fiction about Cuban missel crisis and reverberations in UK.
The author’s historical misstep, however, stands out for this art historian. The Musée d’Orsay is installed in the Gare d’Orsay built in 1898-1900. The train station was renovated as an art museum — the national collection of 19th-century art in 1968. It would still be the train station ( but not used as such) in 1942, when Jeanine flies over the city of Paris upon her arrival. The author notes that she flew over The Musée d’Orsay.

Historia
Young playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. But seeing it performed is unlikely, in a theater world where the playing field isn’t level for women. As Melina wonders if she dares risk failure again, her best friend takes the decision out of her hands and submits the play to a festival under a male pseudonym.

Stick with historical fiction
Revisado: 11-02-24
The mix of past and present doesn’t work well. The historical fiction about Emilia Bassano and narrator’s voice are excellent. The historical character is admirably tenacious and creative. Her contemporary counterpart, Melina is whiney and naive. The narrator’s voice is annoyingly singsong and whiney. This part is weak and does not hold up to the historical part and could be eliminated.

Historia
It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends. It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up. Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds. In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity.

Loved this book!
Revisado: 05-31-24
I identified with the young protagonist, even though I am decades older than her. I think the predicament of stifled selfhood among women is timeless. I was so engaged with the psychodrama, i didn’t want the book to end.

Historia
Baumgartner’s life had been defined by his deep, abiding love for his wife, Anna, who was killed in a swimming accident nine years earlier. Now 71, Baumgartner continues to struggle to live in her absence as the novel sinuously unfolds into spirals of memory and reminiscence, delineated in episodes spanning from 1968, when Sy and Anna meet as broke students working and writing in New York, through their passionate relationship over the next 40 years, and back to Baumgartner’s youth in Newark and his Polish-born father’s life as a dress-shop owner and failed revolutionary.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.
