Joan Hickson’s voice was excellent and never distracting.

A couple of the recordings were broken up in the middle of the stories. Otherwise, enjoyed the endings which left the listener to their own conclusion or were completely surprising.

Historia
Detective Peter Diamond, chief of the Avon and Somerset Murder Squad, is taking a short holiday in the country. His former colleague Julie Hargreaves has invited Diamond and his partner, Paloma, to visit the idyllic village of Baskerville (no relation to the Sherlock Holmes story, so he's told). It turns out Julie's invitation was not without ulterior motives. The woman who owns the village's largest dairy farm has been convicted of manslaughter following a terrible accident in her grain silo.

A well written, engrossing story
Revisado: 07-02-24
Story full of twists and turns and misdirections. Never sure of the villain until the end. Strong characterization. Excellent narration and writing. Some of the descriptions were horrifying and upsetting to the point that I had to stop reading for a while. But by the end, I was satisfied that this was a book worth my time.

Historia
Mr. Shaitana is famous as a flamboyant party host. Nevertheless, he is a man of whom everybody is a little afraid. So when he boasts to Hercule Poirot that he considers murder an art form, the detective has some reservations about accepting a party invitation to view Shaitana's "private collection". Indeed, what begins as an absorbing evening of bridge is to turn into a more dangerous game altogether.

A real “Who Dunnit?”
Revisado: 10-04-23
The events of the story are delightfully misleading, keeping the reader guessing until the surprise ending. The story was rather choppy, perhaps due to the many very short chapters.
Hugh Fraser’s narration was adequate but several times I had to re-listen because I didn’t recognize the voice of Hercule Poirot. The Belgium accent seemed almost non-existent at times.
Glad to read this early Christie story and realize how her later writing evolved into my favorite author.

Charming and theatrical.
Revisado: 02-21-23
Enjoyed this story thoroughly especially the Druid approach to Christmas rather than Father Christmas. The mispronunciation of Alleyn’s name is very off-putting by the experienced narrator but otherwise I appreciated her performance.
This was my second reading of Tied Up in Tinsel and well worth every minute. Ngaio Marsh is very entertaining and captures the nuances of the period for an insight into England and the many characters. I can imagine this being performed as a play.

Historia
It is 1890, and in the days before Christmas, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson are visited at Baker Street by a new client. Eve Allerthorpe, eldest daughter of a grand but somewhat eccentric Yorkshire-based dynasty, is greatly distressed, as she believes she is being haunted by a demonic Christmas spirit. Her late mother told her terrifying tales of the sinister Black Thurrick, and Eve is sure that she has seen the creature from her bedroom window. What is more, she has begun to receive mysterious parcels of birch twigs, the Black Thurrick’s calling card.

Surprisingly good.
Revisado: 12-08-22
As it is almost Christmas, the title caught my attention. I also was looking for a story that was not overly long. Not knowing the author, I hoped he was able to capture the characteristics of Holmes and Watson and Conan Doyle’s intricate story lines. He succeeded in both keeping my interest to the very end. And leaving me with a smile on my face for Christmas.

What did they say?
Revisado: 05-15-22
As always, I enjoyed the Roderick Allen story line and the unique characters. With this version, I was constantly having to rewind to see if I could understand what certain characters were saying. Parts of the story were lost to me due to this. Frequently, I was confused as to which person was speaking especially as one woman had a deep voice.
