Historia
Delightfully cheeky, unquestionably charming, and sometimes maddeningly naive, cloth mage Paul Gallagher is desperately trying to make a name for himself in a reimagined postwar London. But in a world where magic is commonplace, sewing enchanted clothes is seen as little more than a frivolous distraction. Paul is hiding a secret, however: he possesses a powerful - and illegal - innate magic. Unfortunately, Paul confides in the wrong person - his latest crush, Captain Hector Hollister - and is drawn into a sinister plot that risks reigniting the machinery of war.

No, this wasn't it.
Revisado: 01-12-22
I was so excited about a queer Fantasy audiobook in Kindle Unlimited, it even sounded fun and quirky!
Alas, it is not.
This book doesn't actually know what it wants to be. And, even worse, the book doesn't actually know who Paul is supposed to be,
The story is set in 1950s London, but with magic. Being gay gets you thrown in jail, the church has a very clear stance. Yet, Paul is a happy-go-lucky openly bi dude who is perfectly at peace with his sexuality and lives it out pretty openly. Which I would have loved to read if Paul wasn't deeply religious (which felt incredibly shoe-horned in)! The fact that his sexuality is at odds with his religion as well as illegal by law doesn't give him any kind of concern or inner conflict. How even??
For me, it would have worked much better if this had been a Fantasy world where queerness is perfectly accepted (we really need more of those). Alternatively, Paul could have not been religious (just pretended to be for the sake of the story or whatever). Or he would have had to show some kind of reaction to his actual circumstances, given how difficult real life is for queer people in places where not being straight is illegal and religiously persecuted.
As for the story itself, it wants to be quirky and cozy, yet there is torture and skinning and very graphic, extremely disgusting violence.
I finished this book for only one reason. It is so at odds with itself that I kept thinking it would become the quirky, fun, queer Fantasy that I had expected. And once I was entirely sure that it really, really wasn't any of that, I was so far in, that I decided to finish it just so I could mark it as "Read" on Storygraph.
I can't put in words how much I wish that an actual queer, cozy, quirky Fantasy had been published in Kindle Unlimited "Listen for Free"!

It was lyrics at first sight when I saw Violet Rhodes across that crowded party. She was lights and darks, swirled together. Music in motion. And all of it while looking like a hitwoman at an Elvis convention. I had nothing to offer the intriguing girl but a one-night stand. I figured I’d revel in my last night of anonymity before my first tour and shoot her a quick “we’ll always have LA!” good-bye the next morning. But nothing went according to plan.

And this is why I love the Morgans the most!
Revisado: 05-16-19
Dax is a true Morgan, meaning entirely lovable. An honestly good guy who’s still super sexy and exciting. Proving that Romance heroes don’t have to be bad boys to be interesting!
Violet is the kind of likable, understated Romance heroine who can let a guy like Dax shine, while still having her own story, her own successes, and her own personality. She isn’t just a background for Dax.
Their story is one of forbidden love. A one-night-stand turning into tons of feelings.
The narration by John Lane and Lauren Rowe was beautiful as ever. And hearing John Lane make a goat sound totally made my day LOL
To be honest, as much as I love listening to John Lane, I would have preferred a different voice for Dax. I imagined something a bit more raspy and less growly or deep. More of an indie rock singer’s voice, less of a Death Metal singer’s voice, haha.
But that really doesn’t take any enjoyment away from listening to this audiobook.
Lauren Rowe created an entire Rockstar universe, including a band website, a trailer that made my Grunge kid heart beat faster (but, you know, in a cool way, of course), and actual real music videos for the original 22 Goats songs from the book. It’s not only a very immersive experience, it’s also damn impressive. Go Lauren! 😀

Good fun between a party girl and a celibate guy!
Revisado: 05-16-19
Between the title and the cover, I was sure I had veered into “sweet Romance” territory here. Not exactly what I had in mind when looking for audiobooks with sex-positive women! Alas, this is absolutely not a sex-free story.
Just like Brooke, we have to wait. And wait. But then, things sure get hot between her and the Aussie. I loved the dynamic of her looking for a good time between the sheets, and Mason looking for his one true forever love.
J.F. Harding has an adorable Australian accent and Holly Chandler is the perfect bouncy Brooke. I had a great time listening to them!

When Seattle yoga teacher Kate Davidson agrees to teach doga (yoga for dogs) at a fundraiser for a local animal shelter, she believes the only damage will be to her reputation. The police arrest Dharma, a woman claiming to be Kate’s estranged mother, and charge her with murder. To prove Dharma’s innocence, Kate dives deeply into the worlds of animal activism and organizational politics.

Fun cozy mystery!
Revisado: 03-12-19
The Downward Dog Mysteries are a cozy mystery series about the adventures of Kate the yoga teacher.
Kate is an incredibly likable and amusing main character. While she tries to live her life as a centered, relaxed yoga practitioner, she also struggles with a serious temper. And that has a tendency to get her into some unfortunate situations.
The case she’s trying to solve in Karma’s a Killer took quite a few twists and turns. And while I wasn’t really surprised in the end whodunit, I did wonder several times during the story if I was really right with my guess.
For me, this had the perfect balance of suspense and relaxing entertainment. The story felt very fleshed out with many interesting side characters. Not to mention all the adorable pets who each had a distinct personality.
This was my first audiobook with Anne James. She has a very captivating and fun narration style and it’s easy to distinguish between the different characters. She narrates all of the currently available audiobooks in the Downward Dog Mystery series.
I’m definitely looking forward to continuing with this series and would recommend this to any fan of cozies!
I received this audiobook at no-cost from Audiobookworm Promotions. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Historia
Vampire Alexis Black is on a mission - to rejoin the human race. Coerced into signing an ironclad contract by an angel-with-attitude, Alexis must hunt down and assassinate at least one vampire, werewolf, or creepy crawly every night for 50 years to become human again. Too bad the contract didn’t mention the badass vampire who now rides shotgun in her brain, insatiable bloodlust, or her new I-hate-everything-with-fangs sidekick. If she can fulfill her end of the bargain, her humanity is restored, if not she will be destroyed.

Awesome Urban Fantasy!
Revisado: 01-30-19
This series is definitely a new favorite of mine in the genre!
Alexis is the total bad-ass you'd hope she would be. But given how unhappy she is with all the power she has as a vampire, she becomes a complex, interesting and "real" character.
The world-building, as well as the different players, were set up very nicely. The story is fast paced and I was absolutely captivated right away.
Chelsea Stephens is a fantastic narrator with a great set of voices. Characters were easily distinguishable and she has some pretty awesome accents.
I'm really looking forward to the next books!

Unfortunately, beyond being able to kick ass on the board, she doesn't have many skills to offer up, which leads her to a hustle - and a lot of trouble. Trying to make it right, she's stuck back in the game and miserable about it...until she meets Carmen. Carmen Barnes is a beauty queen who's out to prove she's more than just a pretty face. Hosting a chess tournament for a local teen's homeless shelter is just the thing. One caveat: She doesn't know a thing about chess.

So romantic!
Revisado: 01-30-19
This is a perfect romance story!
It’s a quite fascinating set-up and both protagonists are adorable, interesting and “real”.
I really like how Em Stevens follows what I would call a “standard Romance recipe”. That sounds kind of bad but it really isn’t. It’s what I want to read and what I’m often missing in lesfic. The story ventures into the forbidden love trope but it does so in a Romance way, not in a “coming out” way. It was actually an unexpected twist and done really well.
As for the audio, I love Ainslie Caswell’s voice. It fits the two women perfectly and her narration is very captivating. She wasn’t always exactly on point in regard to using the correct intonations and sometimes the voices weren’t so easily distinguishable because of it. Nevertheless, it was an engaging, fun narration style and I was invested in the story.
If you’re looking for a sexy, romantic audiobook with two women, I wholeheartedly recommend this one!

It's the end, or is it?
Revisado: 01-30-19
To sum it up: I loved The Morning Star!
Of course, I'm quite sad that the series is over. And I hope there will be many more novellas and Imp World novels with Sam.
But I liked this ending to the series. Sam's big plotlines are wrapped up, yet nothing felt rushed. And the situation in the world as a whole stays open enough for the spin-off stories. I absolutely loved the whole thing with Samael. It was perfect and so fitting!
As for the audiobook:
Angela Rysk's narration was absolutely fantastic, as in the previous 9 books. She fills Sam with so much life and I'm always absolutely captivated while listening.
This series will continue to be the one I re-listen to most often!

Poetic
Revisado: 01-28-19
S.L. Scott has a fantastic way with words and at several points, the book sounded like song lyrics. Very poetic!
The characters grew on me and the group of supporting characters - the other Crow brothers and the people from The Hard to Resist series - was extremely likable and drew me in. I also really liked how Jet's son was portrayed. He felt like a real kid and didn't fall flat like it so often happens in Romance.

Wonderful narration, great story!
Revisado: 01-19-19
While Crosscurrents works as a stand-alone for Ilsa's love story, I really liked how the events from book 1 had bigger consequences that led to the events of this story arc. It was actually quite suspenseful! And I loved how D.B. Sieders laid the groundwork for many more parts in this series. I'm definitely looking forward to more elemental guardians!
As in book 1, I really enjoyed Stefanie Kay's narration. She has a great array of different voices and accents. It's easy to differentiate between characters and she kept me absolutely captivated.
