Historia
Drawing on the latest discoveries that have only recently come to light, Scottish archaeologist Neil Oliver goes on the trail of the real Vikings. Where did they emerge from? How did they really live? And just what drove them to embark on such extraordinary voyages of discovery over 1,000 years ago? The Vikings: A New History explores many of those questions for the first time in an epic story of one of the world's great empires of conquest.

Very interesting and informative.
Learned a great deal. Only negative is this book jumps around and is not always chronological. On balance, would recommend this book

In CIA Rogues and the Killing of the Kennedys, Patrick Nolan fearlessly investigates the CIA’s involvement in the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy - why the brothers needed to die and how rogue intelligence agents orchestrated history’s most infamous conspiracy. Nolan furthers the research of leading scholars who agree that there remain serious unanswered questions regarding the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy.

Interesting but long /redundant
Revisado: 06-30-23
I almost quit this book several times, but held on to finish.
Well researched , presenting an abundance of troubling facts.
But, blended with the facts are far too many suppositions and assumptions.
Have always questioned the “ Sole Assassin” theory in murders of JFK and RFK. This book provides many additional reasons to question this theory.
Good book but a bit long and redundant.

Say the name 'Enron' and most people believe they've heard all about the story that imperiled a presidency, destroyed a marketplace, and changed Washington and Wall Street forever. But in the hands of Kurt Eichenwald, the players we think we know and the business practices we think have been exposed are transformed into entirely new, and entirely gripping, material.

Wait, did this really happen?
Revisado: 12-21-22
This book is extremely well written, fast paced and reads like a well written novel. Its long and there is a lot of technical jargon and detail. But, it kept my attention and I learned a lot more about Enron (in spite of having read " The Smartest Guys in the Room"). I was shocked at the lack of sound judgement, effective governance, and common sense throughout Enron, but especially at the highest levels. When I finished, I was saddened at the horrible impact this had on so many "regular" Enron employees and at the lives ruined by this exercise in greed, self serving and deception.

This book is extremely well researched and written. It is fast paced, exciting and keeps the listener on the edge of their seat.
After listening to this book no one could ever doubt that this was indeed “ The greatest generation”!
It was a pleasure to get to know the life story of just a few of these incredible people.

Historia
The Year of the Pitcher is the story of the remarkable 1968 baseball season, which culminated in one of the greatest World Series contests ever, with the Detroit Tigers coming back from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Cardinals in Game Seven of the World Series. In 1968, two remarkable pitchers would dominate the game as well as the broadsheets. One was black, the other white. Bob Gibson, together with the St. Louis Cardinals, embodied an entire generation's hope for integration at a heated moment in American history. Denny McLain, his adversary, was a crass self-promoter.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 05-20-19
This book, in my opinion, is more about the politics and the culture of the sixties than it is about baseball. It delves deeply into race relations, political campaigns and the transition from the 50's to the 60's. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I would have enjoyed more baseball. And, while the sixties were an unsettling period in American history, in my view this book is not the most balanced look at the decade. In sum, there are some great parts to the book, but overall I found it a bit of a downer and overly focused on the negatives.

Historia
November 22, 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the tragedy that has haunted America ever since. For the first time, this concise and compelling book pierces the veil of secrecy to fully document the small, tightly-held conspiracy that killed President John F. Kennedy. It explains why he was murdered, and how it was done in a way that forced many records to remain secret for almost 50 years. The Hidden History of the JFK Assassination draws on exclusive interviews with more than two dozen associates of John and Robert Kennedy.

Tedious, redundant and speculative
Revisado: 04-15-19
OK, I finished the book after almost giving up on it at least a half dozen times. But, it was tough going and quite tedious.
The positives: It offers up some interesting theories and provides some new, to me, information.
The negatives: In my opinion, it seems like a number of related short stories/papers were thrown together to create this book; it struck me as very redundant. Also, my opinion is the author speculates far too much and then draws very broad conclusions ( I quickly lost track of the number of times he said "possibly, could have been, perhaps, might have, etc, etc).
After reading many books on the subject, I do believe Oswald did not act alone and the facts surrounding the assassination have yet to be disclosed. It seems incredible that after 56 years there are still so many unanswered questions. To this authors credit, he tries to provide answers. However, to me they were not convincing.

Europe has fallen. Pearl Harbor is in flames. Enter: the Eighth. In 1941 the RAF fought a desperate battle of survival against the Luftwaffe over Britain. Then, from across the Atlantic, came a new generation of American pilots, gunners, and bombardiers, a new generation of flying machines called the B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24 Liberator, the P-47 Thunderbolt, and the P-51 Mustang fighter.

This was the " Greatest Generation"
Revisado: 02-06-19
This book is based upon letters, diaries, recollections, etc of those who were part of the 8th and presents a personal history of this part of the air war in Europe. As such, it does 'jump around' a bit and is not at all a "typical", chronological historical book. However, it is quite informative and very moving. It raises many questions about war and questions of "morality" and puts the war in Europe in proper perspective.
One cannot listen to this book without a very deep appreciation of these young men and the incredible sacrifices they made!
Highly recommend this book.

Historia
In the spring of 1939, a top-secret organization was founded in London: Its purpose was to plot the destruction of Hitler's war machine through spectacular acts of sabotage. The guerrilla campaign that followed was every bit as extraordinary as the six men who directed it. One of them, Cecil Clarke, was a maverick engineer who had spent the 1930s inventing futuristic caravans. Now his talents were put to more devious use: He built the dirty bomb used to assassinate Hitler's favorite, Reinhard Heydrich.

A peek into a different chapter of WW II History
Revisado: 08-17-18
Wow, who knew? I have read a great deal about WW II, but I never knew of these incredible stories and had not heard of most of these brave individuals. This book is fast paced, most interesting and gives a peek into the lives of many unsung heroes. It also sheds light on yet another side of Churchill and what he was willing to do to win the war. Highly recommended!

In 1892, Bryan Mealer's great-grandfather leaves the Georgia mountains and heads west into Texas, looking for wealth and adventure in the raw and open country. But his luck soon runs out. Beset by drought, the family loses their farm just as the dead pastures around them give way to one of the biggest oil booms in American history. They eventually settle in the small town of Big Spring, where fast fortunes are being made from its own reserves of oil.

Not for me
Revisado: 08-17-18
This book is not what I expected. It is a very detailed recreation of decades of a families life; almost like it was written from a diary. But, I don't think it was. Is it historical fiction or what the author has pieced together from records and memories?
Either way, it really was slow and depressing , almost painfully at times. I quit listening several times, but came back thinking it will get better. But, for me, it did not. I found it to be a very 'negative' book, even given some of the very difficult historical periods it describes.
Perhaps I did not read the reviews carefully enough before I purchased it.

Revisado: 08-17-18
This book gives the reader the feeling they are present as history is unfolding. I have read other books on Truman, but this is the best and gives me an even better appreciation of this great President . The 'you are there' feeling makes this most enjobable. Highly recommend.
