Historia
After Emery Hazard loses his job as a detective in Saint Louis, he heads back to his hometown - and to the local police force there. Home, though, brings no happy memories. Hazard's new partner, John-Henry Somerset, had been one of the worst tormentors, and Hazard still wonders what Somerset's role was in the death of Jeff Langham, Hazard's first boyfriend. When a severely burned body is discovered, Hazard finds himself drawn deeper into the case than he expects. Determining the identity of the dead man proves impossible, and solving the murder grows more and more unlikely.

Too Many Bigots Monologuing to Stand
Revisado: 04-28-25
I really wanted to like this series and even gave book two a chance after reading this one, but there is just too much bigotry in both books to be forgiven.
If you don't want to spend at least a full hour of your life listening to white supremacist talking points, slurs, and random racism/transphobia from the main characters, then skip this one.

Historia
Emery Hazard and his partner, John-Henry Somerset, have solved their first case together. The brutal murders that rocked the quiet town of Wahredua have been put to rest. Hazard, however, finds his life has only grown more complicated as he adjusts to his new home. Living with Somers, whom he has been drawn to since high school, makes "complicated" the understatement of the year.

As Transphobic as the Title Might Suggest
Revisado: 04-28-25
I pushed through the abundance of bigoted monologues in the first book with the hope that it would get better with future books. This one is less bigoted overall, but it still completely ruined what would otherwise be a fun, if poorly plotted, murder mystery/sexual tension fest (not much romance at all).

Historia
Eroan, one of the last elven assassins, lives for one purpose: Kill the queen. He would have succeeded if not for her last line of defense: Prince Lysander. Now, captured and forced into the queen's harem, Eroan sees another opportunity. Why kill just the queen when he can kill them all? It would be simple, if not for the troubled and alluring dragon prince.

Graphic SA

I didn't make it past chapter 7 because of the constant, graphic and insestuous SA. Can't say much about the plot because nothing much happened with the plot before I couldn't keep listening.

Historia
No single invention epitomizes the Victorian era more than the black cast-iron range. Aware that the 21st-century has reduced it to a quaint relic, Ruth Goodman was determined to prove that the hot coal stove provided so much more than morning tea: It might even have kick-started the Industrial Revolution. Wielding the wit and passion seen in How to Be a Victorian, Goodman traces the tectonic shift from wood to coal in the mid-16th century - from sooty trials and errors during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I to the totally smog-clouded reign of Queen Victoria.

Deserves a better narrator.
Revisado: 01-11-23
I loved the book, the information, the pacing. I didn't love the narrator. She delivers the book as if reading the driest academic treatise ever written. Ruth Goodman is a vivacious and delightful personality, match the narrator to the author and you'd have a real winner.

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.
