Historia
When Soviet agent Viktor Tronko defected to the US in 1964, he made two intriguing claims: he insisted that Russia had not placed a mole inside the CIA, and that Lee Harvey Oswald had not been recruited to assassinate the president. Convinced that Tronko was working as a disinformation agent, the CIA furiously did everything they could to break him. But Tronko had one more surprise for them: he refused to break.

Tedious to the point I lost track of it. Might have been better if I’d read it in print. It was interesting insofar s it discussed CIA operations. Not sure how accurate it was though. At one point, it focused on the troubles of a defecto living here who couldn’t get a divorce in Moscow. No explanation as to why be couldn’t v get one vhere

Historia
Jamie Fraser knows from his time-traveling wife Claire that, no matter how unlikely it seems, America will win the Revolutionary War. But that truth offers little solace, since Jamie realizes he might find himself pointing a weapon directly at his own son - a young officer in the British army. And Jamie isn't the only one with a tormented soul - for Claire may know who wins the conflict, but she certainly doesn't know whether or not her beloved Jamie survives.

Interesting picture of the early American Revolution. Fiction, but fun.

Story drags in a few places and I occasionally found my attention had wandered and I had to re-listen to a piece to get critical facts I had apparently missed.. But all-in-all I enjoyed it.
In a few places, I suspected - did not know - that the author was fanciful. She has an episode, for example, in which an adult man encounters a water moccasin in The Great Dismal Swamp. The man avoids being bitten and escapes only to have the snake pursue him some distance onto land and attack him. I know nothing about water moccasins, but am extremely doubtful that one would pursue a dangerous enemy much too big to eat. Seems like most animals avoid combat with dangerous enemies or enemies if they have nothing to gain by victory save vengeance. But, as I say, I know almost nothing about water moccasins.
Still, she has interesting pictures of Indian life, medical practices, and 18th Century Life and my doubts about the snake story made me mistrustful of her facts. But insofar as I could tell from Wikipedia what she has to say of Fort Ticonderoga and Saratoga was plausible,
Anyway, the book purports to be a novel, not a textbook, and i enjoyed it.

Historia
Growing up in one of the meanest counties in the Jim Crow South, Carter is the only American president who essentially lived in three centuries: his early life on the farm in the 1920s without electricity or running water might as well have been in the nineteenth; his presidency put him at the center of major events in the twentieth; and his efforts on conflict resolution and global health set him on the cutting edge of the challenges of the 21st.

Interesting - Changed my opinion someday
Revisado: 04-18-21
A good reminder of the very significant steps Carter took that were obscured - in my mind, at least - by his inability to control the Iranian hostage crisis. I never really evaluated the importance of the Camp David accords, for example, or the importance of the Panama Canal treaty, and I had more or less forgotten Carter’s prescient concern with global warming. At times, however, the author seems a bit overenthusiastic, as when at the very beginning he suggests Vogel’s success in fighting inflation after Carter left office can be attributed in some measure to Carter.

I never paid Attention to Mrs. B while she was First Lady and was surprised to learn what a neat person she is. And it was fun to see events I remember from the perspective of a wife a mother of children in the White House and a canny advisor to and companion of the President.

A really good read
Revisado: 03-22-19
I thought the story of tank warfare in Europe after September of 1944 was pretty good. But the end was gripping. After describing the battles the 3rd Armor engaged in, the author described in really moving terms how veterans on both sides of a particular tank engagement in the City of Cologne met in the city decades after the war and came to grips with what they had done to each other and civilians who got caught in the crossfire. Not sure that someone who isn't interested in tank warfare will get to the end, but it sure is worth it if they do. And those who are interested in tank warfare, anyway, will be hooked long before they get there.

Pretty good.
Revisado: 09-27-18
The characters were a bit fanciful - girls around 14, for instance, don’t usually load weapons for their father during desperate gun battles and then prattle innocently about girlish things when the shooting stops.. But the history was interesting, the story flowed well, and I like shoot-em ups. Would have enjoyed the view it gave of the Arab side more, but I knew the English characters were over-simplified and was somewhat suspicious of the view I got of a culture I dont understand.

Ending fell apart
Revisado: 12-08-17
I enjoyed the story and the descriptions of Burma for about two thirds of the book, when I began to think the plot was getting pretty contrived. Still, it was a decent story until I got to the end. Not only did it fail to tie up loose ends already in existence, but created a host of new ones and left them dangling. Very unsatisfactory ending. I am sorry I invested the time in this book.
