What the Heart Wants
By: Nikki Ash
(clutching my pearls) I was NOT PREPARED!!! And no one warned me. What I thought was a story of loss and learning to love again…IS NOT! Aubree looses her husband on Christmas and is left with young twins. After about six years, she opens herself up to dating and falls for best friends. Mannnn! This book was smutty! Just. Made me blush nasty. I’m not against. But my Lawd! On entirely too many occasions I had to sip some ice cold water and fan myself. Ha! I’m not a fan of books like this. But it was good. With all that said…there were some moments that, me as a black woman, WOULD NEVER understand or accept. But hey! It ain’t my life. Check it out. And don’t forget to wear your pearls.

Historia
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

Hidden Sins
By. Selena Montgomery
Stop with the love stories. I cannot deal! These are not Selena’s strong suits. I love you so I can be honest with you. I love you so I must lie to you. I love you so I have no other choice but to treat you like shit. I know you’ve aided me and stood by me and because I love you…I’m going to lie to you and give you partial information and keep you in the dark about almost everything until all the shit has hit the fan and I’ve made all the terrible mistakes and my only choice is to trust you. But I digress. I read the book because it’s a treasure hunt mixed with a little thriller.

Rogue Justice: A Thriller
(Series: Avery Keen, Book 2)
By: Stacey Abrams
Let me be clear. If you’re not a fan of politics, government, governmental conspiracy theories, and things of that nature…this series ain’t for you. Because this book (the series) are candy coated in it. And I loved every minute of it. Rogue Justice picks up about four to six months after While Justice Sleeps. We find Avery in the midst of the ramifications of bringing down the president, embracing her role covering for a sick SCOTUS, her newly formed family and tired of answering the same questions over and over. The drama. The action. The stick togetherness. I am very curious to know how long this series will go. However long…I’ll be reading them all.

Do They or Don’t They???
Revisado: 10-22-23
Rules of Engagement
By. Stacey Abrams (Selena Montgomery)
Either you trust her or you don’t! Either you gone let him in or you’re not! MAKE UP YOUR MIND!!!! This “he said/she said” book was a whole clusterfuck of telling someone they complete you. Then sneezing and expressing pure vitriol for them. Over. And over. And over again. Raleigh or whatever her name is for the moment was there when Adam’s best friend was killed. Then she was there when her mentor was killed. Years later…they’re proof that one or both of them might be alive. Adam and Raleigh have to team up to figure it all out. But the have fallen for each other. Or do they hate each other? Wait. It’s love again. Nope. Still hatred. That back and forth foolishness made me despise the book. It was too much to enjoy. Also. The prologue was a mad long dissertation about how and why the book came to be. Absolutely unnecessary and she be removed. The first book of Stacey’s I didn’t like.

The Longest Set of Inner Monologues
Revisado: 10-22-23
Dark Corner
By. Brandon Massey
It took forever to get to the point. This book felt like the living embodiment of someone saying, “to make a long story short,” the proceeding to tell the long drawn out version. The amount of inner dialogue that transpired was utterly unnecessary. Jesus, Mary and Joseph…get to the point already. I’ve been here three hours. David’s father has died and left him everything. In an attempt to connect with his father post mortem, David moves into his fathers house. In his first days in the house, David meets a beautiful woman, makes some great friends, finds a mysterious family tree and people in the town start disappearing. It is up to David and his friends to find the people and save the town. I just need to know how many peoples was left in the town! And if there is miraculously a sequel. Enough with the inner dialogues. This was not Brandon’s best works.

Ugh! Not My Kind of Thriller
Revisado: 10-22-23
Trial and Error
By. Robert Whitlow
Well. I think we need to better define mystery/suspense/thriller. Because this was not what I had in mind. I definitely did not pay attention when it stated that this was a Christian Fiction/Thriller & Suspense. I didn’t think the two could twine. AND I WAS RIGHT! The main lady, Gracie, is the pure, unfeathered Christian woman who does no wrong. Hold the moral high ground and is possibly the closest thing to Jesus to walk this earth. And Buddy is the good looking guy in search of his missing daughter and her mother. Another missing girl brings these two together to bring everyone home. The climax is incredibly anticlimactic. I’ll just give it. The climax is Buddy feeling the Holy Ghost come over him. Now listen Linda. I’m a Jesus loving Christian to more core. And this was a whole mess. I’m so angry at you for kidnapping that I’m gonna pray for you. Ha! I mean. God bless them and all. But ugh. Just not that great a book to me. But I imagine it will bless someone.

Historia
Cassie McDowell’s life in 1980s Minnesota seems perfectly wholesome. She lives on a farm, loves school, and has a crush on the nicest boy in class. Yes, there are her parents’ strange parties and their parade of deviant guests, but she’s grown accustomed to them. All that changes when someone comes hunting in Lilydale. One by one, local boys go missing. One by one, they return changed - violent, moody, and withdrawn. What happened to them becomes the stuff of shocking rumors. The accusations of who’s responsible grow just as wild, and dangerous town secrets start to surface.

**WHEW** Nostalgia & Anxiety
Revisado: 10-22-23
Unspeakable Things
By. Jess Lourey
**BEWARE OF TRIGGERS**
Sexual assult. Rape. Child abuse. Physical abuse.
Nostalgia is a beautiful fabric that feels good on the skin. This book takes me back. Back to 80’s and a simpler time. Being slightly different. Bike rides. Selling door to door. Dying to be outside. Super simple birthday’s at the park. I could vividly smell the Avon and the dirt. With the good comes the bad. Stranger danger. The town creep and more. Cassie is young and full of faith and spunk. But it is repeatedly diminished by the lessons of growing up. Her father (mother) and those “weird parties.” Local boys being kidnapped and brought back “changed.” A culture of not speaking about traumas. A culture of “what happens in this house stays in this house.” I felt the fear permeating off the page. My anxiety levels were very high the entire book. Can Cassie save the town? Will she speak her truth? Will she make her family see? Or has it been right there all along? Will her fears living at home be realized…or will she stay safe? The very thing, in her own house, Cassie feared most…is the thing that will save her life!

I Almost Forgot About You
By. Terry McMillan
This is one of those books that inadvertently make you self evaluate your life’s choices. Sort of like getting waxed. It seems like a great idea and once you start you really start thinking about all the choices you’ve made in life and how some of them were mad terrible. Georgia recently found out that one of her college crushes has died. And it makes her wonder about all the men she fell in love with over the years of her life. She decides to make a list and reach out to each one. I’m the midst of a full midlife crisis. Friendships. Work. Children. Parents. And the thoughts on change and chance…Georgia finds her path. Listen. When I say this book had me questioning so much about myself. And doing what Iyanla Vanzant calls, “the work.” I’ve listened to it twice. And I loved it.

It’s One of Us
By. J. T. Ellison
Man. The twists and turns. I didn’t see the mind blowing reveals. To me. There are three. A man and wife are having trouble conceiving a child. On a particularly tough morning, a knock at the door cracks the very foundation of their lives clean open and they are both swallowed. Can they make it out the other side? A young girl is in desperate need of a father. Her mother used a sperm bank and refuses to give any information for the daughter. So the young lady goes to extreme measures to get what she wants…consequences be dammed. She shakes her whole world up…but is it good or bad? This ensemble cast book definitely took me on the loop-de-loop!!! I just knew I knew what I knew. And damnit I was wrong. But it was a great book. Definitely recommend. The thrill starts on page one and goes right into the epilogue. Check it out.
