Historia
In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power - the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion. Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

Kudos to Andy Serkis
Revisado: 12-13-21
Serkis is the performer that this text has been waiting for. He carries Tolkien's difficult, archaic language, and he brings each character's voice to unique life.
He's not a great singer, but this doesn't take away from the reading for me. I'll be listening to this recording again.

Historia
It's a deadly dilemma for Martin Odum: both remembering and forgetting his past are dangerous options. A discharged CIA agent turned private detective, Odum is struggling through a labyrinth of memories from past identities, "legends", in CIA parlance. Is he really Martin Odum? Or is he Dante Pippen, IRA explosives specialist? Or Lincoln Dittmann, Civil War expert? Or another, hidden legend?

I don't care for the narrator. His attempts at accents with which I'm familiar sound gratingly false. I can't rate his Russian.

Way too many plot-holes. It's a wonderful place to stage a mystery though, and I gave it as much room as I could. The narrator does a good job.

Historia
A Lincoln Navigator carries three well-dressed people through the barren New Jersey salt flats. The trip is uncomfortable but necessary. Their target has no phone, certainly no email, and never answers his mail. But August Jorgenson is no country bumpkin. Before retiring, he was one of the most famous judges in the country, and only opinions like his fierce opposition to the death penalty kept him from a seat on the Supreme Court.

The author is too fond of their own cleverness and the editor is incompetent. Potentially a great story otherwise but I'm handing this back.

Historia
Cass Neary made her name in the 70s as a photographer embedded in the burgeoning punk movement in New York City. Her pictures earned her a brief moment of fame. Thirty years later she is adrift, on her way down, and almost out when an old acquaintance sends her on a mercy gig to interview a famously reclusive photographer who lives on an island in Maine. When she arrives Down East, Cass stumbles across a decades-old mystery that is still claiming victims, and she finds one final shot at redemption.

Unpleasant shero
Revisado: 05-19-21
I would not want to spend time with a habitual drunkard, liar and thief even if they are a great artist. Which the verdict is still out on this first-person narrator because I haven't finished the book but I'm done with her.

Historia
Late one winter afternoon in upstate New York, George Clare comes home to find his wife killed and their three-year-old daughter alone—for how many hours?—in her room across the hall. He had recently, begrudgingly, taken a position at a nearby private college (far too expensive for local kids to attend) teaching art history, and moved his family into a tight-knit, impoverished town that has lately been discovered by wealthy outsiders in search of a rural idyll.

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Annoying plotholes
Revisado: 04-09-21
I haven't finished this book yet and I'm not sure if I'm going to. For a therapist to go to a bar with their client and proceed to get drunk, clock someone with a pool cue, and leave laughing, is such a bizarre twist that it's hard to pay attention to anything that comes next.

Historia
A service station on the M1: dimly lit, run down, poorly supervised, flickering lights, dark corners; a favorite stopover for long-distance truck drivers on their way up north from London. Behind it, a body is found in a ditch, that of a girl barely out of her teens. She appears to have no family, no friends, no connections anywhere. Other girls have gone missing in the vicinity, and no one has stepped forward to claim them. Anna Travis is assigned to the case. Her blood runs cold when she receives a letter from a lifer she arrested....

He starts out fine, she falls in love, then he flips out on her and she drops everything to win. him. back. (...Spoilers omitted here...) otherwise it's a great police procedural. The ending is too long though. Narration is excellent!
