The story told in this book felt like an electrical wire that repeatedly lit brilliant lights in its revelation of Masonic history and philosophy, and the recent breakthroughs in noetic science.

Complex, intriguing and philosophical
Revisado: 08-07-24
I am not usually a fan of crime mysteries, and I almost quit on this one when I thought it was going be a slasher, but I’m glad I went back to it and read the whole thing. The author does a great job of weaving together not one but two missing person stories, as well as raising meaningful issues ethics and class. I found it riveting and could barely put it down.

Historia
October 1891. A hard winter approaches across the Rocky Mountains. The city of Butte, Montana is rich on copper mines and rampant with vice and debauchery among a hard-living crowd of immigrant Irish workers. Here we find Tom Rourke, a young poet and ballad-maker of the town, but also a doper, a drinker, and a fearsome degenerate. Just as he feels his life is heading nowhere fast, Polly Gillespie arrives in town as the new bride of the extremely devout mine captain Long Anthony Harrington.

Road to nowhere
Revisado: 07-29-24
The language and the narrators accent were fascinating and delightful. The premise of the story had a lot of potential. It felt like the author, maybe fell into a depression halfway through and took his characters down with him. If this was an exercise in Irish fatalism, it succeeded.

Historia
In the near future, a civil servant is offered the salary of her dreams and is, shortly afterward, told what project she’ll be working on. A recently established government ministry is gathering “expats” from across history to establish whether time travel is feasible—for the body, but also for the fabric of space-time.

Time, love, and the malleability of Destiny.
Revisado: 07-06-24
This was the most intelligent and culturally relevant love story I’ve ever read. The narrator exhibits an enormous capacity for both self reflection and sociological assessment of our times. The sci-fi quantum aspects are also well described and entertaining.

Historia
In Tokyo, 16-year-old Nao has decided there's only one escape from her aching loneliness and her classmates' bullying. But before she ends it all, Nao first plans to document the life of her great grandmother, a Buddhist nun who's lived more than a century. A diary is Nao's only solace—and will touch lives in ways she can scarcely imagine. Across the Pacific, we meet Ruth, a novelist living on a remote island who discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox - possibly debris from the devastating 2011 tsunami.

A tale of pain and possibility
Revisado: 06-30-23
I love how this novel plays with the quantum concepts of entanglement, and brings them into very human experience. I also appreciate the correlations that get made between quantum theory and the ancient traditions in Buddhism.
For me, the novel perfectly expressed the threads that weave continually in my own mind and spirit.

Historia
In the war-torn London of 1939, fourteen-year-old Hazel and five-year-old Flora are evacuated to a rural village to escape the horrors of the Second World War. Living with the kind Bridie Aberdeen and her teenage son, Harry, in a charming stone cottage along the River Thames, Hazel fills their days with walks and games to distract her young sister, including one that she creates for her sister and her sister alone—a fairy tale about a magical land, a secret place they can escape to that is all their own.

A beautiful balance between the real and ideal
Revisado: 05-25-23
When I started this book I think I expected a simplistic love story with a happy ending. I was surprised and pleased when it turned out to be a more nuanced tale reflecting a dreadful historical reality and the redemption that is possible through story and imagination.

Historia
Cinderella married the man of her dreams - the perfect ending she deserved after diligently following all the fairy-tale rules. Yet now, 13 and a half years later, things have gone badly wrong, and her life is far from perfect. One night, fed up and exhausted, she sneaks out of the palace to get help from the witch who, for a price, offers love potions to disgruntled housewives. But as the old hag flings the last ingredients into the cauldron, Cinderella doesn't ask for a love spell to win back her Prince Charming. Instead, she wants him dead.

Fairytales are archetypes
Revisado: 03-27-23
And these touch, so many familiar places in my own heroic journey. Dreams of true love are so attractive and also shatter so easily but the sense of another deeper level of reality paralleling the every day is the stuff of Carl Jung and quantum physics. I look forward to sharing this book with my granddaughters as a primer on these matters, and as a warning.

A profound invitation to deep meditation
Revisado: 12-23-22
This book introduced me to meditative practices that I had never heard of before, even though I had some history with the Kagyu lineage. Andrew Holecek is one of the clearest, most present instructors I have ever experienced. It’s quite a feat to inspire one towards emptiness. Well done.

Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

What an amazingly fresh perspective, a window into looking at the obvious through new eyes. Long may the trees endure, and may human consciousness come to appreciate and care for them, along with all of the rest of the miraculous natural world.
