This is also why I love books in general. Greenteeth was amazing. I was enthralled. It was absolutely perfect. I cannot wait to read what Molly O'Neill writes next. I will be a lifelong fan.

Historia
In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, set in 12th-century England. Readers and listeners ever since have hoped for a sequel. At last, here it is. Although the two novels may be listened to in any order, World Without End also takes place in Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building their exquisite Gothic cathedral. The cathedral is again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge.

Satisfying
Revisado: 04-29-25
The book was brilliant but I can't help but feel how formulaic it was. While Petranilla was not as evil as Lady Regan Hamleigh they were both conniving and willing to do whatever it took to get their way. William Hamleigh was renamed Ralph and the characters of Merthin, Caris and Godwin would be tweaked versions of Tom, Aliena and Walleran. The story was terrific but it was the same plot instead of a cathedral we had a bridge a hospital and a tower. I see there are a number of books remaining in the series. I am sure they are also excellent. I need to put more time between them.

Historia
A disturbing tale of a young man's uncanny ability to remain both young and beautiful while descending into a life of heartless debauchery, The Picture of Dorian Gray was considered proof of both Wilde's genius and his perversion. Oscar Wilde's scandalous best seller of 1891 was one of the most damning pieces of evidence used against him in the trial that brought about his downfall.

Excellent
Revisado: 04-06-25
This is not the book I remember. This was a very unflattering peek into the lives of the indolent and upper class. The character of Lord Henry had a number of quotable one liners that made me stop and rewind multiple times. The narration was masterful and gave life to all of the various characters.
I read this as a teenager and I will admit that I think most of it went over my head. I keep wondering if I read an abridged or sanitized version. I will say that Oscar Wilde may have been extremely progressive for his time period but I still felt as if he did not have a high regard for women as conversationalists.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Immersive and addictive.
Revisado: 03-30-25
This book was intense. Ariel Lawhon thrust us into the world Martha Ballard inhabited. She illuminated the lack of women's rights and exposed the barbarity of medical care given by Harvard graduates o medicine at the time. Whenever she mentioned a geographical area I flew to a map. Many of the people in this book are real historical figures. This was a riveting story. I now plan on reading more about Martha Ballard by reading A Midwife's Tale by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich.

Historia
They call them wayward girls. Loose girls. Girls who grew up too fast. And they’re sent to Wellwood House in St. Augustine, Florida, where unwed mothers are hidden by their families to have their babies in secret, to give them up for adoption, and most important of all, to forget any of it ever happened. Everything the girls eat, every moment of their waking day, and everything they’re allowed to talk about is strictly controlled by adults who claim they know what’s best for them.

This is a 'must read'
Revisado: 03-26-25
The story was riveting. The characters were so very real to me.
Despite my five star response to the book I did find that the beginning was drawn out. Also one thing about this book that somewhat ruined the story for me, was the overuse of the 60's - 70's vernacular. I am of an age with the main character. This particular jargon was used but not to the extent the author portrays. I think perhaps film has overrepresented the lingo. In addition I question why teenagers representing the counterculture at that time would follow any rules regarding what they could speak about at all?
Outside of those issues I remember all too well the whispers regarding some girls who went to visit grandparents or aunts for extended periods of time. Grady Hendrix captured a time when society was changing dramatically. Women and girls were protesting for their right to control their own narrative.

Another great book by Jennifer Saint
Revisado: 03-15-25
Atalanta by Jennifer Saint was so good. The author tells the story of Atalanta and her life as a greek hero amongst the Argonauts. The story is compelling and while the prejudice against her as a woman is not surprising the author’s portrayal of the men throughout the books seems a bit misandrist.

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Bucolic settings and incredible characters
Revisado: 03-09-25
Ann Patchett has done it again. She has written another unforgettable book that was hard to put down.
I am going to say that I loved the book. It was definitely a five star read for me. I was awed by the self composed teenager Lara was and riveted by her growth throughout the book.
The relationship with her daughters left me feeling that I wished I had that with my own parents. They were so open with each other.
Meryl Streep was an spectacular narrator, she was able to give flesh and form to all of the characters. What a treat.

An absolute masterpiece
Revisado: 02-24-25
Within moments this book pulled me in a fully immersed me in medieval life. The characters were so distinct that I felt I knew them. The author developed their personalities and never turned them into tropes. I found myself so interested in the architecture discussed that I began to research pictures of cathedrals and castles built during that time period. All of that added to a magnificent story. The audiobook was almost 41 hours long and yet they flew by. I will be reading the rest of the series.

I'll pass on the rest
Revisado: 02-06-25
There was so much hype over the Rebecca Yarros book Fourth Wing that I finally read it. Let me preface by saying that I am not a fan of the romantasy genre or romance novels in general. I do not want to feel like a voyeur while I am reading. I don’t want to witness anyone’s bedroom activities. I think that I prefer a less graphic approach to relationships than I encountered in this book. I find it more embarrassing than erotic. I prefer the subtleties of Anais Nin that allowed my imagination to create the scene. I felt the same way about Sarah J. Mass when I read the ACOTAR books. I read the first four and they got progressively more graphic and less interesting. I have the fifth book though I doubt I will read it.
Anyway back to Fourth Wing: It took too long to get interesting. I understand that world building is complex and necessary in fantasy, it took way too much effort on my part to hang on until it got interesting, almost 1/4 of the book. In my opinion the book needed less setup and more substance. I almost tossed it aside more than once. I think the story could have been so much better if the focus was more on the dragons, the school and even the politics. I would love to know how the story resolves but I will not be reading the next two books in the series.
I realize this is going to be an unpopular opinion. I respect anyone whose opinion differs from mine.

This was enjoyable! I was impressed by the production. I loved the narration and the sound effects, especially the squishy ones The characters came fully to life during the audio performance. My only negative comments would be regarding Ginger. She was such a great character so why was that necessary?
