Good premise...horrendous follow-through
Revisado: 10-19-24
This should've been a novella. The author just goes on & on & on & on & on & on & on & on & on & on & on & on & on & on & on & repeats the same story so many times even the most melodramatic-loving readers will hv no choice but to roll their eyes. The ending is obvious from moment go - just do yourself a favor & skip this. Truly. You'll be drawn in & then be worn out by the trite drama, if you listen to this.

It was very good until the last 3 verrrrry drawn out hours.
Revisado: 09-02-24
I'm having so much trouble finishing the last 1.5 hrs, it's just so drawn out & trite. It's as if the author didn't know where to go after the first pretty darned good 11 hours, & so fell back on overused, tired "romantic" plot lines. Every scene is over-worked, 7 times too long, too "explained". I'll edit this if I feel differently, somehow, at the very end.

A high-profile attorney in the middle of a leave of absence following a personal tragedy is drawn back into the legal arena amidst a media firestorm when he agrees to represent a popular rap artist accused of brutally murdering his pop star girlfriend. With its powerful voice, pause-resisting tension, and strong cast of characters, Adam Mitzner’s novels are reminiscent of such best-selling authors as Scott Turow and John Grisham.

Revisado: 06-18-24
Slow beginning, great middle...& then uck. What a sad excuse for a man. No integrity (sorta spoiler alert), saying his wife wld understand...just uck. Ending cldve been SO much better had it played out w/the truly bad person been taken down.

Get ready to get angry (because it’s truthful, often)
Revisado: 05-02-24
Excellent book; the author is getting even better, the characters are developing nicely, & part of the storyline rings so true it made me angry. Yet, when the book was over, i was bummed because i wanted it to go on! 🤪 Very glad there’s a fourth book; sure hope #5 is on its way, STAT!
[Sorta spoiler: discussion of r*pe - though not of the details - so if that “triggers” you, pls be forewarned. Also, if the fact that she’s either not believed or the prosecutor doesn’t give a cr*p (as she’s the one they’re trying to make look like the “bad guy”) could give you nightmares, you might want to tread slowly. My blood boiled in places & I had to take a break once or twice (but this does demonstrate how well-written it is!), as I witnessed something “same-but-different” happen to a friend.]

So. INCREDIBLY. Boring.
Revisado: 04-03-24
Holy moly! First, the main character is a woman, yet the narrator chosen is a man (! Whyyyyy?). As if that’s not bad enough, not only is he a man, but he’s a man who reads as if he’s narrating a 1952 7th-grade science film strip. If you can stay awake long enough to get past that, the actual story is as dynamic & gripping as a mayo & lettuce sandwich, on white bread from the clearance section. Run as fast as you can…AWAY from this book.
Perhaps it is more interesting when read rather than listened to, but knowing there are so many other great books out there I still need to get to, that I’m not taking the risk.

Historia
An anonymous tip puts Bosch on a case that has remained unsolved for decades, the vicious stabbing of a teenage boy whose body was found in an abandoned Old Hollywood restaurant. Cold cases are often the toughest: With no body, no murder scene, and no fingerprints, Bosch nevertheless gets lucky when DNA evidence from the murder weapon points to a known killer. But the DA insists that science alone is not enough - he needs the case to be bulletproof before he'll take it to court.

Horrendous narrator
Revisado: 02-12-24
The story is…ok…not up to usual Bosch levels, but worth it if you wish to ensure you’ve listened to all of the Bosch stories…however, it’s the really awful narrator who ruins it. I’ve said this before about this narrator, but it sounds as if he has really horribly-fitting dentures, trying hard to keep them in while spitting everywhere & making loads of shhhh-shhhh-shhh sounds in about every second or third word. His character voices are grating (one is so nasal it’s as if he’s attempting a “you dirty rat” Cagney impression. His voice is also much too old for Bosch, even at this point in his career; like I’ve said before, if this was Bosch looking back on his career from about 98 years of age I cld buy it, but otherwise…no. Another thing is that each sentence is given the same level of import, whether it is one that actually deserves some level of excitement or emphasis, or if it’s a more mundane sentence, describing what someone looks like. This method is very wearing on the ears & I actually found myself missing how important a particular sentence or phrase was, as they all have the same amount of stress & by then, my brain was numbed to it.

Here is LAPD Detective Harry Bosch as we've never seen him before, in three never-before-collected stories. In "Suicide Run", the apparent suicide of a beautiful young starlet turns out to be much more sinister than it seems. In "Cielo Azul", Bosch is haunted by a long-ago closed case: the murder of a teenage girl who was never identified. In "One Dollar Jackpot", Bosch works the murder of a professional poker player whose skills have made her more than one enemy.

Narrator sounds like he has VERY loose dentures…
Revisado: 02-12-24
While the stories are solid, the narrator is atrocious. His constant “shhh-shhhh-shhhh” sound in almost every word is so off-putting & ruins the experience. If anyone has trouble listening to someone eating loudly, or problems w/other “mouth noises”, then you do NOT want to listen to this particular recording - I’d recommend reading it w/your eyes, rather than your ears. The narrator truly does sound like many patients I’ve had whose dentures were very loose-fitting, & they were constantly trying to hold them in w/their tongue…& tended to let loose a lot of spittle. I felt deep empathy for my patients who couldn’t afford better dentures, but a narrator should be chosen by what s/he adds to the story, not what s/he can take away from the story. Besides that, his voice is much too old for Bosch at this point in his life; perhaps if there was a book w/Bosch at 98, looking back on his life…

Now they’re taking over the Christmas pageant. The Herdmans have never heard the Christmas story before, and they don’t know anything about shepherds or Wise Men. When Imogene hears about the swaddling clothes, she demands to know why anyone would tie up a baby and put him in a feedbox.

Adorable, sweet, & moving story; HORRIBLE narrator.
Revisado: 12-07-23
Why, oh WHY do adults think that speaking in a cutesy manner will be attractive to kids? Ugh. Either speak as if you’re an adult looking back at a childhood memory (which is what the story actually IS), or get a 12-year old to read it. When I was a kid, I always turned off my attention when an adult spoke like this to me/us, or when an audio narrator did the same. As a decrepit old lady, I still do. Ugh.
However, this story was funny, sweet, & moving enough that I was able to ignore the voice for the words.

Should’ve been a short story
Revisado: 10-20-23
Holy moly, did this go on and on and on and on and… Hours and hours were spent repeating the same information, pushing home the point that the church was disgusting; I wanted to yell, “I get it, already!” I guess all the repetition was there to fill it out enough to be a book. Another thing that truly bugged me was that this book was the opposite of the writer’s mandate eight to “show, don’t tell”. The whole “mystery“ was told to the reader at the end, with absolutely no part of the “show” anywhere in sight. (No pun intended.😏)
I really enjoyed all the other books in the series, but this was a slog and took me weeks to finish; I normally get through books this length in 3-4 days. I always wonder if, after an author becomes quite famous, editors start to be scared to do their job to tell the author when something is no good and needs to be re-written. If that is the case, then this surely is an example.
