What do all those lines and squiggles and dots mean? Basic Music Theory takes you through the sometimes confusing world of written music with a clear, concise style that is at times funny and always friendly. The book is written by an experienced music teacher using methods refined over more than 30 years in schools and in his private teaching studio. Lessons are fun, well-paced, and enjoyable.

This book made music theory possible for me!
Revisado: 02-03-19
At the the age of 49, I decided to not only learn guitar and bass but to also study music theory. I've listened to this book so many times over the past year that I would have worn it out had it been a cassette tape. The thing is, it works! I actually understand what I'm learning on guitar and can finally read music notation. Jonathan Harnum is not only an excellent author (be sure to check out his other titles on Practice...also repeated to the point of wearing out the cassette) but an outstanding narrator! How good is this book? I've purchased it on Audible and listen to it nearly every day, bought the Kindle version, AND purchased the paper copy of the book from Amazon. Want to learn music? There's no better starting point!

Taste Great...Not Very Filling
Revisado: 03-01-12
Would you try another book from James Luceno and/or Marc Thompson?
James Luceno writes great Star Wars novels and Marc Thompson is by far the best narrator for turning the readings into a movie-like experience. This book managed to be entertaining yet somehow unsatisfying. It's depth of plot is comparable to the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special.
What could James Luceno have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Although enjoyable to listen to, the storyline was shallow compared to the other novels and series.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No
Any additional comments?
Much like cotton candy, this story was tasty and fun to ingest but not very filling. Die-hard fans may have a hard time taking it seriously.

Some interesting history but...
Revisado: 02-27-07
Originally published in 1999 during the dot-com boom, some parts of this book are a bit dated. Written as a series of mini-biographies and interviews of a group of early Microsoft employees, it does contain some interesting historical insights to Microsoft but the stories are mostly bland and repetitive. The "maniacal work ethic" theme became especially grating after chapter 5. The narration was well-paced and clear but somewhat monotone. Overall, this book pales in comparison to similar works such as iWoz and iCon.
