Historia
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

So many good stories in one
Revisado: 01-22-25
Loved hearing different perspectives and stories in one. Didn’t see some of it coming which was a rare and nice surprise. Of course, I wish some of the stories would’ve been a little different, that some of the women would’ve been able to publicly call out some of the bad behaviors instead of finding other solutions, but aside from that difficult pill to swallow the rest was excellent.

Cute but dragged on
Revisado: 01-22-25
Fun spicy Christmas book, but also predictable. Narrators voice is a little too cutesy for me to fully enjoy.

Historia
A powerful, moving memoir - and a practical guide to healing - written by Dr. Edith Eva Eger, an eminent psychologist whose own experiences as a Holocaust survivor help her treat patients and allow them to escape the prisons of their own minds. The Choice weaves Eger's personal story with case studies from her work as a psychologist. Her patients and their stories illustrate different phases of healing and show how people can choose to escape the prisons they construct in their minds and find freedom, regardless of circumstance.

Revisado: 11-12-24
If there was ever anyone who could claim the victim status over and over, it’s Edith. But hearing how she has worked over and over to find freedom both in body and mind is inspiring and just incredible. So many lessons to take away.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

So much better than I expected
Revisado: 10-27-24
For some reason the idea of a story of an octopus just wasn’t compelling enough for me to start this one. But with the author coming to speak at our library soon I started it and I am so glad I did. It was excellent. It checked so many boxes of a great book. The characters were well developed, they were all believable and complex, it wasn’t all expected, it had so many layers. And the narrator was So good!!!

Incredibly well developed and believable characters
Revisado: 08-16-24
Sort of spoilers: It was a hard hard book to read. Truly so awful, and I’m so glad I did. It’s a powerful perspective into the minds of different types of people and circumstances I hope I’ll never know personally. I appreciate how complex she made them. You know she’s a good author when she had me by the end of the book also struggling to want her to let go and move on bc of the hope of potential and happiness and also glad she made the final decision. I love how she let the characters still have a relationship of sorts for the long term situation and also safety and security.

Real downer
Revisado: 07-20-24
I loved a lot about the book but felt like a glaring omission of the story line was the very real feedback that she was amazing and a catch in the news and in her daughter’s circles. Sure the haters will be there, but also the people that are like women her age are also awesome and good job for him and good job for her—none of that was in the book and felt ridiculously overlooked.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Having grown up in Ohio but not quite surrounded by the poverty and problems he talked about, but could still see, it was interesting to hear his perspective on what it was like to grow up in those various tough situations and how we can possibly help.

Misery Lit
Revisado: 06-16-24
This was a total downer, so completely depressing, I can’t think of anything that brought any happiness in reading this, no moments in the book. The voice of the narrator was so depressing and clipped that even in the smallest moments that could have maybe been positive, it sounded depressing. I have no idea why any of the couples fell in love bc they all seem so miserable and lacking any positive attributes, I think it would have been a way better book to show any redeeming characteristics of the characters. Thought provoking, yes. But so many questions throughout the book that were left unanswered and unexplored. It’s hard to imagine married couples where there is so much unsaid or uncommunicated for so long and throughout generations, like different people but with so many of the same issues. It felt so unrealistic as far as relationships and so confusing about what was really going on with Violet bc of the major lack of communication and questions or addressing her issues with anyone qualified to help.

Historia
The culture of “safety” and its intolerance of opposing viewpoints has left many young people anxious and unprepared for adult life. Lukianoff and Haidt offer a comprehensive set of reforms that will strengthen young people and institutions, allowing us all to reap the benefits of diversity, including viewpoint diversity. This is a book for anyone who is confused by what’s happening on college campuses today, or has children, or is concerned about the growing inability of Americans to live and work and cooperate across party lines.

Great discussion points
Revisado: 06-05-24
Read this for a book club and we had a great discussion around a ton of topics. I loved that every day I listened to it I found myself sharing bits of it with those around me. Lots to consider.
