Performance was fine. Wide range if voices for the different characters. Personally, I thought the writing to be juvinily obnoxious, but that's kinda just how most teenagers are written (somewhat accurately) in most high school romance books.

The story was average at best, boring and downright harmful at worst. The revelations and things that made the main character different and "not like these other small-town girls" were about as spicy and delicious as red pepper flakes on an otherwise unseasoned roasted chicken. Not to mention, the father, Reverend Gordon, is played up as this supportive dad who made a mistake asking Jo to go back in the closet and who apologizes in the end, but in actuality he is the defenition of "I love you, but I don't love what you are" who does nothing to earn Jo's forgiveness in the end.

I understand this book may be a good read for some, and I can see some of the interest others show in it and the worth they might get out of it, but for me this book was a a trainwreck. There was nothing in this book that wasn't done better in The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School while in high heels and walking backwards. I recommend listening to Lesbiana's instead.

It's torture porn. Very focused on finding the grossest, most uncomfortable ways to harm others and describe it to the readers, so much so that it overshadows any horror aspect. I more often than not felt sick, and not scared. Not for me.

I was expecting it to be more like seperate case files discussing different secret organizations, and instead it was a rambling and non-chronological explaination of how secret societies interpreted the Bible, for the most part. It jumps around a lot, making it hard to follow, especially because it was not what I was expecting at all. It brings up some interesting points, but overall it was easier to ingore than to pay attention to.

Cute LGBT Harry Potter spoof, lack of bi rep??

TL;DR: cute Harry Potter spoof, fun to listen to, read Fangirl first, I don't think I'll be reading the rest of the series.

Overall, it was cute and quirky to listen to. I personally believe you need context to fully get it: 1) you need to know a little about Harry Potter, and 2) you need to have read the book Fangirl, from which Carry On was inspired from.

It's a cute story that pokes fun at Harry Potter, and I love how the magic works in their universe. However, Carry On is meant to be a fanfiction for a fictional series in the real book called Fangirl, by the same author. If you don't know this, the first couple of chapters has you feeling like you missed something. The characters are in their 7th year, and many references in the first couple chapters are to events that we as the listeners never get to experience, because the series that Simon is from is not a real book series. If you read Fangirl though, this part is easy to get past.

[Spoilers past this point!!]

The only other thing that bothered me was the lack of Bisexual representation. Having gone from having a girlfriend in the first half of the book to realizing he loves Baz in the second half, Simon wonders frequently if he is gay. There's no consideration that he could be bi, or if he is 100% gay, there's no conversation where he considers bisexuality only to decide that he was gay. Normally, not including all sexualities is not a big deal for me, but because Simon spends so long wondering if he's gay, and as this is a queer romance book, allowing him to explore who he could be through sexuality I felt could be important.

Overall though, a really fun read, but I don't think I will be reading the rest of the series.

It was a good story. not one of my favorites by him, but good. I just wish he didn't use a slur for one of the nicknames.

It was a pretty good story, and one of the few I listened to on audiobook that made me cry. It was a very intense story where Valarie is stuck between moving on and living in the past of a school shooting she caused. my only gripe was the pacing of the story. I was shocked to realize the book took place after the shooting, and at first I really enjoyed living in the moment and flashing back to the past every time something in the present reminded Valarie of the shooting or of Nick. I also liked the news paper clipping inacurately describing something and then seeing what it was really like theough Valarie's eyes. But then there became a lot of back and forth, and some flashbacks would be a whole chapter, and it became just inconsistant enough that I'd ultimately wished the author just started the book at the start, or just before the shooting, and told the story chronologically.

To much incest. Reads like a not-quite-as-great Stephan King book. Not looking to get into a gigantic series where all the books take months to finish.
