I am in chapter 11 and the phrases watching the grass grow and paint dry keep coming to mind.

Very slow moving with a lot of unnecessary description and the characters need more development. The supposed Italian accents in the narration are annoying and distract from the dialogue. In all fairness, I need to give the book more time, since I have so enjoyed Trigiani’s other books.

Although Ms. Donati's Wilderness series will always be my favorite, I have thoroughly enjoyed the first two books of the Gilded Hour Series. The time and effort the author puts into her research make her stories come alive. Her characters are so engaging and memorable, you wish you could meet them. When reading the Gilded Hour Series you really get a feel for what it was to be living in New York before the turn of the 20th century. As always, her main characters are strong, highly intelligent women who are always evolving in their view of the world and their place in it.
I was surprised that the author never named the narrator when giving thanks to those involved in the success of her novel at the end of the book. In my opinion, Kae Reading has to be one of the best narrators I have ever heard. Her seamless transitions from one to another of the dozens of characters in this novel are outstanding. So much so, that in the future, I will seek out novels just for her narration of them.
As Ms. Donati states. "I love big books, and I cannot lie+, I must reply, so do we Sarah, so do we! Please keep them coming.

When an author has a formula that works, why mess with it? I feel that must have been what Ms. Trigiani was thinking when she wrote this book. I cannot say it was my favorite of her novels, but it is in the top four. The characters are relatable and memorable, the story has just enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. And as always she gives us a taste of Italian culture and famiglia. Set mostly in the 1930s-1950s, the author makes the story relevant to modern-day by introducing a strong, vibrant, and intelligent female main character as she does in many of her novels. Ms. Trigiani, please keep these Italian family inspired novels coming and we will keep reading them.

Makes you feel every emotion, sometimes all at once. I loved every character and wished the book would go on forever. I will never look at my dog the same way.

The story was interesting and well thought out, however I started to wonder about the state of the author's mind. As the layers of horror became more and more depraved, I actually felt that the author was enjoying being able to let her mind go rampant with descriptions of torture. I had to fast forward at times. It is frightening to think that an author could be a "sane" person and be able to write such vile stuff. I will never be able to look at a picture of a missing woman again without having a visceral response. I guess that was the author's intent.

I found the information valuable, but the narrator, Betty Johnston, is so annoying. Her voice is like a mini-jackhammer in my head. I had to keep turning off the book to get a rest from her. Her attempts to be animated are laughable. If you can get past the narrator, the information is worth it. I have been doing keto for a while, but I learned a lot.

I found it boring and much longer than it needed to be. Did not much like or care about the characters and was rather glad when I finally finished it. It is one of those books that makes for good background sound while you are cleaning the house, but not particularly engaging, in my opinion.

Similar in style to Phillipa Gregory, although slower moving. The narration is awful. The Brish accent is heavy and throaty as if done by an old noblewoman. The narration was so distracting that I could only listen in small bits at a time.

As soon as I realized that New Orleans was the setting of this book, I knew the storyline would be one of hardship after hardship, but holy, moley, this novel is just exhausting. The author does not allow the reader a break from adversity. I very much enjoy the history woven throough the story, but the characters are continually beaten up, (often literally). I am currently on a personal program of avoiding unnecessary stress. I avoid media and television as much as possible. I read for pleasure and relaxation. This novel provided neither. I actually found muself skipping forward when characters were nade to endure physical abuse. I must be very thin skinned these days, but as much as I really love this series, I will be glad to finish this book. I must say that Kate Reading has easily risen to the top of my personal list of favorite narrators. She is nothing less than amazine.

I am on chapter 19. I keep waiting for a reason to continue this book and I just can't continue. I had high expectations of this novel after reading the reviews. I am currently listening to a 5-minute description of fireworks. There are six hours left and so far it is a first-person account of two girls in 1950;s Italy. It is a coming of age novel of the rivalry between these 2 girls. My little Italian grandmother told me much more interesting stories. It is boring, and the narrator has a droning, annoying voice. Well, I think it is time to return this one.
