Few things get more attention when shopping than a 60+ y/o woman laughing for no reason. Well, apparently no reason. So sad that the other people at the grocery store weren't listening to this story. They would have laughed, too.

What a charming tale! Never underestimate what the invisible people see and hear. Just because people are domestic help does not mean they are deaf. However, the same can be said about the table next to you at a coffee shop, the other people on a bus with you or even someone on the bench adjacent to you. It's amazing what one can learn if one just listens and observes.

This was an all over the place, disjointed, small town gossip novel. I live in a disjointed, small town gossip place, and this was more than I could bear. I love my Southern novels, but I am not keen on ones that still make us sound like sexist, racist idiots. I admit, though, the brother and his band of miscreants were the only thing that got me as far as I did. They were older versions of the hoodlums that graduated with me 45 years ago.

The twists just coming, then it all falls into place. Narration is excellent, with a fine rendition of multiple voices, each easily distinguishable. New faves to seek out when I need a good mystery.

I'm not sue what Barker was aiming for with the title, but this book is so much more than a broken heart thing story. It is one of those books that you'd best set the end of chapter timer so that you remember to do something besides listening for what happen next. I'm not kidding. I found myself staring into space, trying to mentally piece this extravagant puzzle together

I have long been a fan of paranormal mystery/thriller novels. Koontz has been a long-time favorite of mine and it's safe to say that Barker's stories follow a similar pattern, However, I can't be certain if it was the words or the insanely-talented narration that kept me setting that chapter timer. Otherwise, it turned into the book I just couldn't turn off, kind of like books when I was a kid and hid in the bathroom to read.

One big difference between this book and many of Koontz's stories, there was an edge of romance thrown in. Not a whole bunch, but just enough to give hope to your imagination that the lead characters would remain together even after the story ran its course. It doesn't necessarily leave room for a sequel, but it does leave with some character inferences that something else could happen.

Enjoy the story. Just remember to set the end of chapter timer.

Bold & Brassy Bourdain at his best

I you ever watched Anthony Bourdain on one of his TV shows, I don't need to tell you this is a colorful listen. Probably not one to play within kids' earshot. However, for adult ears, it is a wonderful listen.

He gets more personal on this one. He talks about a slew of well-known chefs. He talks about experiences and get-togethers with other famous chefs. And he talks about the absolute love of his life: his daughter. He tells how becoming a father changed his perspective on so many things. The only difference is that coming from him, it's believable.

Anthony's baritone voice has a warmth and a rhythm that is like a Sunday drive through the mountains on a gravel road. It swoops, it swirls. It has highs and lows. It's clean and just a little dirty. Enjoy the ride.

I haven't finished this yet, and I can already tell it would really convert a ho-hum dining experience into an amazing one. It's as if Consumer Reports and Cook's Illustrated got together to determine what works best for diners and restaurateurs. For instance, did you know that cheese being aged responds differently to music? Whodathunkit?!?!?

Give this a listen, even if you are just planning a dinner party. It can make a difference for both you and your guests.

I adore interviews with NdT. He makes it all sound so simple and logical. However, this is too complicated for me. I feel like I need to take notes, but since I listen while driving, that is not an option. Maybe if NdT could provide a downloadable PDF of definitions, that would help. Of course, maybe if I listened to it more consistently, I would remember it better!

I keep this book downloaded. Why, because the narration is so worth it. I have always enjoyed a warm baritone voice with a Southern accent, and Matthew has both of those qualities in spades. When I need something soothing, Matthew delivers.

But that's not all.

His story is absolutely worth the listen. Greenlights is taken from his personal journal, and his history is filled with bumper stickers, post cards and other philosophical gems. Lucky for us, he shares them. And for those who believe he is too young for an autobiography, one can never judge how much life someone has lived in a lifetime. Some people live more life in a day than others will ever live in their lifetime.

Great story, but it left me with questions.

There was one teaser repeated throughout the story, but there was no follow-up on it. Usually when Harlan finishes a book, it is finished. This one, however, left us hanging, especially since the story wasn't really about the boy from the woods. Otherwise, there would be no questions unanswered.
