Historia
Sage Winters always knew her sister was a little different even though they were identical twins. They loved the same things and shared a deep understanding, but Rosemary—awake to every emotion, easily moved to joy or tears—seemed to need more protection from the world. Six years after Rosemary's death from pneumonia, Sage, now sixteen, still misses her deeply. Their mother perished in a car crash, and Sage's stepfather, Alan, resents being burdened by a responsibility he never wanted.

When she arrives at the idyllic getaway, she’s pleased to find that the owner is a handsome man by the name of Calvin Wells—and he’s eager to introduce her to his easygoing way of life. But there are things Grace discovers that she’s not too pleased about: A lack of cell phone service. A missing woman. And a feeling that something isn’t right with the ranch.

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

comes of as Christian propaganda. If you love God, everything works out great. :/ Also, the narration would be better, which is unusual since I usually love when the author reads their own work.

disappointed
Revisado: 09-15-21
too much meta, so much makes it grossly precious.
I'm all for lesbians, but almost everyone in this book is a lesbian. seems unlikely at the very least.
by the time you get to the end you want to know the point, but there is no point. dissatisfying.
the narrator's voice is very annoying--NOT XE SANDS' voice, I mean the narrator that the author wrote.

In Like Life's eight exquisite stories, Lorrie Moore's characters stumble through their daily existence. These men and women, unsettled and adrift and often frightened, can't quite understand how they arrived at their present situations. Harry has been reworking a play for years in his apartment near Times Square in New York. Jane is biding her time at a cheese shop in a Midwest mall. Dennis, unhappily divorced, buries himself in self-help books about healthful food and healthy relationships.

Took forever to get going, then like a harlequin romance, only slightly less cheesy. Seemed like the author didn't know if she wanted to write a memoir or a novel.

Long After-School-Special
Revisado: 08-24-18
I loved The Nightingale so I was excited for this, but it's like a cross between an After School Special and a teen romance novel. The choices the characters make are just unbelievable, as if the book is trying to teach you a lesson--like propaganda. The author writes well, so the characters' emotions are understandable, but I had to work very hard to stop saying "No way," throughout. I prefer books that are more realistic.

Historia
The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

Historia
In this deeply personal book, the celebrated Haitian-American writer Edwidge Danticat reflects on art and exile. Inspired by Albert Camus and adapted from her own lectures for Princeton University’s Toni Morrison Lecture Series, here Danticat tells stories of artists who create despite (or because of) the horrors that drove them from their homelands. Combining memoir and essay, these moving and eloquent pieces examine what it means to be an artist from a country in crisis.

What did you love best about Create Dangerously?
Really beautiful essays. Danticat is a wonderful author.
Would you be willing to try another one of Kristin Kalbli’s performances?
No! She reads every sentence with the exact same intonation and lilt in her voice, she sounds like a machine, like Siri.
