Historia
Founded by Alexander the Great and built by self-styled Greek pharaohs, the city of Alexandria at its height dwarfed both Athens and Rome. It was the marvel of its age, legendary for its vast palaces, safe harbors, and magnificent lighthouse. But it was most famous for the astonishing intellectual efflorescence it fostered and the library it produced. If the European Renaissance was the "rebirth" of Western culture, then Alexandria, Egypt, was its birthplace.

Alexandria
Revisado: 08-16-17
Who knew a city I'd never really given much thought to (outside of playing Sid Meier's 'Civilization') would be so interesting? The history starts with Alexander and goes on through many events, historical figures, & intellectual contributions.
The narrator does a great job. Has a pleasant voice.

Robert K. Massie returns with another masterpiece of narrative biography, the extraordinary story of an obscure German princess who became Catherine the Great. Born into a minor noble family, Catherine transformed herself into empress of Russia by sheer determination. For thirty-four years, the government, foreign policy, cultural development, and welfare of the Russian people were in her hands.

I enjoyed the book
Revisado: 08-04-17
Would definitely choose another biography written by same author. The author did a good job balancing when to organize material by theme or chronologically, & included only relevant, interesting material. I don't know enough about the material to know if he was biased, but if he was, he was not obvious enough about it to be disruptive,
Would also choose a book by this narrator over one narrated by someone unknown. A good, pleasant voice, not intrusive or annoying.

Historia
Absalom, Absalom! tells the story of Thomas Sutpen, the enigmatic stranger who came to Jefferson township in the early 1830s. With a French architect and a band of wild Haitians, he wrung a fabulous plantation out of the muddy bottoms of the north Mississippi wilderness. Sutpen was a man, Faulker said, "who wanted sons and the sons destroyed him". His tragedy left its impress not only on his contemporaries but also on men who came after, men like Quentin Compson, haunted even into the 20th century by Sutpen's legacy.

They found a perfect reader
Revisado: 02-26-17
This is my favorite book by Faulkner because it is so atmospheric and rich - though it confused the heck out of me when I first encountered it as a kid :) Let's just say the narrative voice has its own style and the story loops around a bit.
This reader does a fantastic job on a difficult text.

How and why we got embroiled in the Middle East
Revisado: 09-08-04
This is a powerful history. It does much to explain how and why the United States first got into the business of overthrowing governments.
The book is interesting, and I enjoyed following it.
