Alexander C. Kane does it again

Another terrific and imaginative book from Kane, who has a knack for making wildly unrealistic situations work by being attuned to the all-too-real ways humans and institutions work. If you haven’t discovered this author yet, you are in for a real treat. If you have, well, you won’t be disappointed. Here’s hoping there is a sequel in the works…

Great performance and dialogue

A very talented performer makes the witty dialogue in this book pop. At times the performance is over-the-top, but so are the characters so the two work well together. My only disappointment was the made-for-television end -- the author left too many loose ends and frustratingly implausible connections.

This is the story of a long, painful, slow slog of a pilgrimage. Perhaps it is fitting, then, that the story is also an interminably slow, long slog. While there is a good idea here, the author’s descriptions are dreadfully repetitive and the characters ultimately paper-thin. Still worse, are the never-ending build-ups to climaxes that ultimately fizzle. I am still kicking myself for listening to the whole thing when I should have given up after the first hour.

This is one of the most creative stories I have read in a long time. So often, creativity in novels takes the form of novel literary devices and little else. Here, it is the story itself that is so unusual and so truly "new" feeling. The narrator is also excellent and well-suited to the author's writing style.

Another great read from Ann Patchett, and one that is even more thought-provoking than Bel Canto or the Magican's Assistant. The ending is satisfying in part because it leaves so many possibilities. I so wish there were a sequel -- but Patchett gives you enough to write one in your own head, so it is hard to object too much.

The perfect match

The Night Circus as narrated by Jim Dale represents the best of the audio book genre. Author and narrator are perfectly matched. Together they create a vivid, tantalizing tale that is simultaneously thought-provoking and romantic. The imagery alone is well worth the listen.

(For those who have listened to Dale's narration of the Harry Potter series, the audioboook feels a bit like Harry Potter for grown-ups -- although it manages to feel both more magical and more realistic.)

Splendid

This is a beautifully written book with compelling characters. Language plays a central role in this book, and left me with a renewed appreciation for how the constraints of one's language affects one's sense of self. The narration is also among the best I've heard. Highly recommended.

Disappointing

The characters were not believable, chapters seemed repetitive, and the narrator's voice for the protagonist's lover made him seem unhinged and unattractive contrary to the author's apparent intentions.

An enjoyable romp. Would have given it more stars were it not from the abridgement.

Tell, not show

This audiobook has a charming story, a good plot line, and an excellent narrator. Yet the writing is at times painful. The author leaves nothing to the reader's imagination or conjecture, instead choosing to have the characters spell out their emotions and thoughts in unrealistic detail.
