Intriguing World-Building
Revisado: 07-22-25
I received a free copy of this book for an honest review. I enjoyed that the world-building happened slowly and often by debate between two of the characters, especially early on. It was a refreshing way to dump exposition without the usual monologue. The characters were likable (or hate-able). The MC did come off as surprisingly strong in some ways that were not fully explained, in my opinion. I did get a bit lost with all the different groups and politicking. There were twists and turns in the story as things were not always as they first appeared. And it set a good hook for things to come. The narrator was excellent throughout. Overall, it’s an enjoyable ride, and a world I’d like to learn more about!

Historia
Vainqueur Knightsbane is your average dragon: A giant, fire-breathing lizard who loves to take naps on his golden hoard, kidnap princesses for fun, and make the life of adventurers miserable. Vainqueur's only pleasure in life is to watch his treasure get bigger, one coin at a time. So when a would-be thief turned unwilling minion tells him about "classes", "levels", and "quests", Vainqueur wonders if maybe, just maybe, he should consider a career change. After all, why bother hunting monsters for free when you can get paid for it?

What if . . . ?
Revisado: 08-22-24
This story runs with a fun idea of what if a dragon became aware of leveling and started adventuring. It’s an interesting exploration of how a prideful, narcissist character would go about growing in power and what he would focus on. It’s also an effective way to explain to the reader about the system (which MUST have been created by dragons) in this world along with the characters.
The story is enjoyable and the characters are consistent in their motivations. Growth occurs as the story progresses. It’s entertaining. It ends with additional story to tell in the next book.
I only had minor complaints about certain voices of characters or some repetitiveness in the writing. No deal breakers here.

Surprising Zombie Tale
Revisado: 06-09-24
This story was unlike any zombie story I’ve ever read. It’s unique in the sense that it slowly expands the perspective as characters meet each other. Deaths are unexpected, so you never know who is safe. The spread of the plague is fascinating and shows how challenging it would be to prevent the spread. I will admit that it started slowly (as it realistically would) but kept my attention as it continued. I would definitely recommend a bit of patience and sticking with it. Like I said, it has been one of a kind!
My only complaint is the amount of language in it. I could have done with less. Keep that in mind if that bothers you. There are also implied instances of sexual assault, abuse, and explicit drug use.

Two years have passed since the lights went out. Crow and his small group of survivors have done their best to forage supplies and live off the land, but danger looms in every shadow.

Disorganized
Revisado: 05-27-24
I think the book had a really cool idea but lacked the proper execution. The jump between characters was often confusing. Flashbacks seemed to be random. I can appreciate wanting to build a mystery, but I was confused about timelines and history to the point that it was distracting. A little bit of world building up front would have been helpful. Characters were fairly unlikable. The amount of cursing was excessive for me and seems to be in there for the sake of cursing. The narrator did a decent job but there was a bit of an echo. Overall, the book had an interesting idea, but the execution was confusing. I will not be continuing the series.

Who knew that getting a second chance for life on another world - after you died - could turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to you? Morgan has been living on this new world for quite some time. He has made friends, found love, been betrayed, formed a guild, fought off a goblin horde, and become an adventurer. His life is perhaps a bit strange now compared to what he had been used to on Earth, but hey, he has an energy sword now.

Favorite of the series so far
Revisado: 04-15-24
I really liked the format of this book with the rounds of the tournament. The main character has matured and is less exasperating/annoying. The battle descriptions are interesting as is the growth of the characters’ powers. The narrator does a great job differentiating voices and characters.

Good, Twisty Fun
Revisado: 02-23-24
This was a very entertaining series with an interesting magic system and well-formed characters. There were enough twists and turns to keep the mystery of the greater story interesting as well as satisfying endings for each book. The characters were enjoyable as well. I appreciated the levity among characters. It’s well worth a read.
Just a few nitpicks:
-The narrator overall does a great job. His voices occasionally merge a bit going from one character to the next which was distracting at times.
-The listing of stats was a bit irritating in the beginning as it was stated several times with few changes. That just might be something that didn’t translate as well in an audio format. I would have appreciated just what changed instead of everything.

Far in the future, 60,000 light-years from Earth, a loose confederacy of Terran exiles is locked with the enigmatic Protoss and ruthless Zerg swarm. Each species struggles to ensure its own survival among the stars in a war that will herald the beginning of mankind's greatest chapter - or foretell its violent, bloody end. Danny Liberty was a good reporter...too good. When his investigations struck too close to the heart of the corrupt Terran Confederacy, he faced a simple choice: continue his current series of exposés, or take a hazardous new assignment covering the Marines.

Best StarCraft Novel So Far
Revisado: 10-21-22
I’ve listened to several of the StarCraft novels due to the recent sale Audible completed. This one is the best one I’ve listened to so far. Nostalgia is probably playing a role here, but it doesn’t take away from the good experience. I think the author did an excellent job of adding depth to familiar characters and adding more detail to the familiar story of the first Terran comparing for the original StarCraft game. The narrator does an excellent job with the voices and conveying emotion through his reading. If you liked the story of the first game, then this is a great add-on that will further appreciation for characters like Raynor and Kerrigan. I liked Mike Liberty quite a bit as well.

Revisado: 09-11-20
Sure, it’s not perfect and there’s plenty of “name-dropping” going on. Regardless, it was nice to be back in action with Firefly and the crew. The narrator did a good job of having a Westernish accent as well. If you go in with an expectation to enjoy another story with these characters, then I think you’ll like it too.

A revolution is unfolding. It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans - except Katniss.

Tatiana Maslany is the One Ring
Revisado: 09-28-19
This book is a stark, dark look at the depths of humanity. I appreciated this story much more thinking of it as a commentary on power and manipulation. It’s also a good statement on how much we lose when we go to war. Soldiers on both sides deal with trauma and horror for years.
As always, Tatiana Maslany is nothing short of #bossstatus. She injects an emotion into the reading that enriches the story at every level. She truly brought the story and pain to life.
