Historia
When the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, they sent virtually the entire Jewish population to Auschwitz. A Jew and a medical doctor, the prisoner Dr. Miklos Nyiszli was spared death for a grimmer fate: to perform "scientific research" on his fellow inmates under the supervision of the man who became known as the infamous "Angel of Death" - Dr. Josef Mengele. Nyiszli was named Mengele's personal research pathologist. In that capacity he also served as physician to the Sonderkommando, the Jewish prisoners who worked exclusively in the crematoriums and were routinely executed after four months.

This should be required for everyone to read
Revisado: 03-21-25
This was a hard one. This book should be required for high school kids to read at least once. The saying “he who does not know history is condemned to repeat it” fits perfectly. It’s scary how close the US has come to being like the start of the 3rd Reich.

Historia
Verteran investigative journalist Stevie Cameron first began following the story of missing women in 1998, when the odd newspaper piece appeared chronicling the disappearances of drug-addicted sex trade workers from Vancouver's notorious Downtown Eastside. It was not until February 2002 that pig farmer Robert William Pickton would be arrested, and 2008 before he was found guilty, on six counts of second-degree murder. These counts were appealed and in 2010, the Supreme Court of Canada rendered its conclusion.

Great book but narration is subpar
Revisado: 02-13-25
It’s a good book but the narration sucks. The narrator has no energy, her voice sounds bored. I’ve had this book for years and haven’t been able to finish it because every time I play it I’m instantly passing out.

Historia
Two victims of the infamous Cleveland kidnapper share the story of their abductions, their decade in captivity, and their final, dramatic rescue. On May 6, 2013, Amanda Berry made headlines around the world when she fled a Cleveland area home and called 911, saying: “Help me, I’m Amanda Berry...I’ve been kidnapped, and I’ve been missing for 10 years". A horrifying story rapidly unfolded. Ariel Castro, a local school bus driver, had separately lured Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight to his home, where he kept them chained in the basement.

It’s okay
Revisado: 05-01-24
It’s okay but it’s mostly about Amanda and, I don’t know, there is something about her that doesn’t agree with me. I don’t like how she claims she doesn’t have Stockholm syndrome but shows clear signs. Also, what she says is so different from Michelle’s testimony. Loved Gina’s POV.

The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate - a life and a role that she has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is.

Good but cliche
Revisado: 11-30-23
It’s a good story but that ending is so cliche. Spoiler alert: one sister dies and the other one is magically cured after years of battling cancer. Like come on.

Historia
An electrifying first novel that shocks by its language, its circumstances, and its brutal honesty, Push recounts a young black street-girl's horrendous and redemptive journey through a Harlem inferno. For Precious Jones, 16 and pregnant with her father's child, miraculous hope appears, and the world begins to open up for her when a courageous, determined teacher bullies, cajoles, and inspires her to learn to read, to define her own feelings, and set them down in a diary.

Revisado: 06-13-23
Beautiful and tragic story. This is one of my favorite books. Truly devastating but also beautiful in its own way
