Historia
Sami Kierce, a young college grad backpacking in Spain with friends, wakes up one morning, covered in blood. There’s a knife in his hand. Beside him, the body of his girlfriend. Anna. Dead. He doesn’t know what happened. His screams drown out his thoughts—and then he runs. Twenty-two years later, Kierce, now a private investigator, is a new father who’s working off his debts by doing low level surveillance jobs and teaching wannabe sleuths at a night school in New York City. One evening, he recognizes a familiar face at the back of the classroom. Anna.

The awful plot
Revisado: 03-29-25
The worst Coben book ever. The main character was not likeable and nether was any other character.

He started the fire. Nate Shepherd's client didn't intend to kill anyone. That doesn't matter. When he arrives, Nate finds a neglected case and a looming trial date for double murder. As he scrambles to discover what happened, Nate is resisted by a stonewalling prosecutor and a grieving town, each bent on punishing his client. Worse, every fact Nate uncovers confirms that his client started the tragic Mission Road fire.

Wonderful Main Character
Revisado: 11-18-24
I liked the engaging story and the interaction of characters, the team, and that Nate Shephard is a down-to-earth, non-arrogant character. I look forward to book 9.

Historia
The catastrophic power of a giant hurricane can raise coastal waves 30 feet high and blow through houses at devastating speeds. For TV meteorologist Perry Stuart, however, such predictions are hypothetical, as he chiefly predicts periods of English drizzle - until a fellow forecaster offers him a Caribbean hurricane-chasing ride in a small airplane as a holiday diversion. But a frightening accident teaches Stuart more secrets than wind speeds.

Was all that sex necessary to sustain interest?
Revisado: 01-19-24
Not a bad plot but the abundance of frantic sex was distracting and did not add to Stone as a sympathetic character.

Historia
Lawyer Andy Carpenter and his wife, Laurie, enjoy walking their dogs, Tara and Sebastian. By this point in their marriage, it’s routine. When out for one of their strolls, their simple ritual isn’t so simple anymore. Across the street, a man is mistreating his dog. Three things happen at once: Andy yells, Laurie runs to stop the abuse, and so does a closer passerby, who so thoroughly beats the owner that both are arrested when the cops arrive.

No sympathy for main character
Revisado: 09-22-23
I felt like quitting, I kept going because that is what I do with 99% of books. Such a waste of time. This female protagonist is so stupid—and profane one top of it all. It is if the book was written for sex-on-the-brain adolescents. The dialogue was sophomoric. In addition, she is a ignorant mother. No control. And calling her at work? Unbelievable!

Historia
Defense lawyer Andy Carpenter usually tries to avoid taking on new cases at all costs. But this time, he's happy - eager, even - to take the case that's just come his way. Andy's long-time friend Martha "Pups" Boyer takes in stray puppies that the local dog rescue center can't handle, raises them until they're old enough to adopt, and then finds good homes for them. Not everyone admires the work Pups does as much as Andy does, however.

Historia
In the fall of 1863, the Union army is in control of the Mississippi river. Much of Louisiana, including New Orleans and Baton Rouge, is occupied. The Confederate army is in disarray, corrupt structures are falling apart, and enslaved men and women are beginning to glimpse freedom. When Hannah Laveau, a formerly enslaved woman working on the Lufkin plantation, is accused of murder, she goes on the run with Florence Milton, an abolitionist schoolteacher, dodging the local constable and the slavecatchers that prowl the bayous.

I was not pleased with this novel—at first, but I kept going. I became engaged with the characters, especially Pierre Cauchon and Miss Darla. As always, Burke’s poetic prose is beyond words and captivating. The name Burke was mentioned in the story, and I wonder if JLB was mentioning his ancestors.
