Not bad YA
Revisado: 01-31-25
The story and premise were solid; there's a lot you can explore in this setting. however, a lot of the story was very predictable and the main characters should've known or suspected a lot more than they did. it took way too long for a certain reveal to happen and the MC was way more surprised than they should've been. overall though it was pretty enjoyable and young adults would probably have fewer quibbles with it than me. I'd say it's worth a read if you like the premise.

Tremendous
Revisado: 09-12-23
What a beautiful and sorrowful story, perfectly written. The characters are all very memorable and incredibly distinct. Without giving anything away, this is a must read book. The only thing that I think could've been better was the narration. I didn't like that the narrator spoke so softly the entire book and there weren't adequate pauses when switching from one character's perspective to another so it was initially quite confusing. But other than that, book of the year for me.

Historia
When a young dancer burns to death on stage, her friend Génet Shilling wants to know why. That puzzle leads Génet through strange underworlds, upending everything she thought was real. An urban faerie tale from the author behind Mage, Deliria, and Powerchords, Red Shoes explores a realm where music becomes magic; love, death, and energy converge; and time is just a state of sound.

Very interesting alt fiction
Revisado: 07-01-23
I really enjoyed the narration and the music which really added to the feel of the story. The storyline was interesting but somewhat flawed. Still very good but I felt that it left a few strings unraveled that I would have preferred to be tied up. overall very enjoyable and reminded me a lot of when I was a teenager in the 90s and my own explorations of mysticism and alternative reality.

Historia
In the early 20th century, the United States government concocted a plan to import hippopotamuses into the marshlands of Louisiana to be bred and slaughtered as an alternative meat source. This is true. Other true things about hippos: They are savage, they are fast, and their jaws can snap a man in two. This was a terrible plan. Contained within this volume is an 1890s America that might have been: a bayou overrun by feral hippos and mercenary hippo wranglers from around the globe.

good premise, mediocre writing
Revisado: 07-24-22
narrator was great but the story was fairly weak due to the mediocre writing. I really appreciated the premise but I felt like the story didn't tie into the setting enough. But overall it was a fine way to spend a few hours. not my favorite book but it wasn't bad and I don't regret reading it.

Surprisingly good
Revisado: 02-08-18
While the quality of writing was not particularly good, the quality of the story being told was very compelling. There is a lot of problems with the writing (inconsistencies, awkward writing, confusing timelines, etc.) and the themes of the book are very heavy handed, but all of that is overshadowed by the world building that was done. Overall, it's a very enjoyable book with great narration.
