Bram Stoker ingeniously modernized gothic folklore by moving his vampire from traditional castle ruins to modern England. With Dracula, which has been interpreted and dissected by scholars for generations, Stoker changed the vampire novel forever.

It Is a Classic for a Reason!
Revisado: 12-30-24
This book turned out to be better than I expected. I saw mixed reviews, but wanted to see for myself.
The key aspects that enjoyed were: 1) the development of Dracula as the villain, 2) the way side characters like Jonathan Harker, Abraham Van Helsing and Renfield are intertwined in the Count’s plot to infiltrate England, knowingly and unknowingly, and 3) the intersectionality of gender and sexuality in the story’s historical context.
I also found it intriguing that so much this novel created and influenced what we know as the modern story of the vampire and other gothic horror tropes. We owe so much to this novel that I didn’t realize until I read this book. Even the terms “undead” and “nosferatu” have seemingly originated within the pages of Dracula.
My only qualm is that the frequent perspective changes, with the journal entries, can be confusing. Nonetheless, this novel has crept into my top 20 favorite books of all time and my top 10 favorite horror books of all time. It is a classic for a reason. 4.95/5!

"My name is 'J' and I'm awkward--and Black. Someone once told me those were the two worst things anyone could be. That someone was right. Where do I start?" Being an introvert in a world that glorifies cool isn't easy. But when Issa Rae, the creator of the Shorty Award-winning hit series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, is that introvert--whether she's navigating love, work, friendships, or rapping--it sure is entertaining.

Revisado: 10-28-24
As a fan of Issa Rae, this was a cool memoir to read. This definitely mirrors he character in the tv show Insecure, and it was fun to see the parallels between the two. Solid work.

The BEST Contemporary Memoir Out!
Revisado: 10-26-24
Hands down the best memoir I’ve read in my life. Will is not only funny, but it is relevant and relatable. He does an amazing job of leaving you with a lesson to apply to your life after talking you through how he fell short in his journey. I know that Will Smith has become something of a polarizing figure within the past 5 years, but this was eye-opening. It all makes sense after reading his life’s journey up to this point.

Great Build Up, But Ending Seems to be Missing Something
Revisado: 10-17-24
This book was written perfectly to set up one hell of an ending, but, to me, I felt it missed the mark. Maybe that was the author’s intention, to leave the reader on somewhat of a cliff hanger, but it would have been amazing to see what happened after the characters made the discovery and what they did with that information.

I’ve always been fascinated with space and how the universe works. This book really takes a complex topic and breaks it down so that a high school English teacher can understand it.
I appreciate Dr. Tyson for his anecdotes, and his personality and delivery always makes me want to learn.

Historia
In 1927, Zora Neale Hurston went to Plateau, Alabama, just outside Mobile, to interview 86-year-old Cudjo Lewis. Of the millions of men, women, and children transported from Africa to America as slaves, Cudjo was then the only person alive to tell the story of this integral part of the nation's history. Hurston was there to record Cudjo's firsthand account of the raid that led to his capture and bondage 50 years after the Atlantic slave trade was outlawed in the United States. In 1931, Hurston returned to Plateau, the African-centric community three miles from Mobile.

Optimism in the unlikeliest places!
Revisado: 10-15-24
This book reminded me of Roots, but much more compressed. It hit on, what seemed to be, the key points of the slave trade and the ripple effects of its inception.
Hurston does a wonderful job at humanizing Oluale Kossola, who, for most of his life, was considered someone else’s property. He somehow managed to find hope, companionship, and a life worth living despite his circumstances. God rest his kind soul and thankful to have read his story.

Black girls and women disappear every day, but not without a trace. Join actress and activist Erika Alexander in a neo-noir, true crime drama as she searches for Tamika Huston, a 24-year-old Black woman from Spartanburg, SC who went missing in 2004. Her case became a rallying cry for other missing Black women in America and led to a growing demand to expose a system that ignores missing girls and women of color.

Gripping Investigative Read!
Revisado: 10-14-24
I’ve been a fan of Erika Alexander since Living Single and I could tell that this was a labor of love for her. The way in which she conducted interviews, compiled facts, and pieced together the final product was truly amazing. I pray that our society does better at bringing to the forefront the absurd number of Black women that go missing in this country.
Also, the trigger warnings that Ms. Alexander placed throughout the book were thoughtful and helpful. In my humble opinion, Finding Tamika was amazing and very much needed.

Historia
Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai’po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear—and even follow you home. These shiver-inducing tales introduce listeners to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge.

It Was Aight
Revisado: 08-21-24
I read this book because I saw that it was edited by Shane Hawk, whom I became a fan of after reading his book Anoka. I thought that this book would match the creepy and disturbing stories in that book, but only a few lived up to the unsettling tone while the vast majority fell short. Overall, it was solid storytelling, however, my expectations were set too high. I give is a 3.87/5.
My top story was Kushtuka by Mathilda Zeller followed by The Ones Who Killed Us by Brandon Hobson, Collections by Amber Blaeser-Wardzala, Dead Owls by Mona Susan Power, and White Hills by Rebecca Roanhorse.

From the elections of Barack Obama and Donald Trump to the tragic events of Ferguson and Charlottesville, the subject of race has come to the forefront of American consciousness. Legendary satirist D. L. Hughley offers his own cutting observations on this contentious issue that continues to traumatize the nation, a wound made more painful by the ongoing comments and actions of the 45th president. Hughley uses humor to draw attention to injustice, sardonically offering advice on a number of lessons, like "How to make cops feel more comfortable while they're handcuffing you".

Hilarious and Well-Written
Revisado: 04-11-24
I enjoyed how this was written and performed. Not only was it funny, but it was statistically backed. Hughley gave valid points and made this feel like a comedy show when it was really a poignant letter to America. Satire is often truth blended with humor and this does it well. I found myself laughing one moment and thinking deeply the next.

Not a Debut Novel
Revisado: 04-10-24
I want to be clear that this is a solid 3.89 for me. This was a cool remix on arguably one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, but I often got lost in the shuffle of storylines happening simultaneously. Gong did a great job of setting Juliette and Roma as exs that seemed to both want revenge on the other for hurting them. It flipped the traditional narrative on its head. I enjoyed the addition of the mysterious monster that was involved in the pandemic sweeping over the city, and this turned into a murder mystery (which I always love)! The implementation of Juliette and Roma’s relatives, that were vying for the power of their respective families, really interrupted the flow of the main story. Just when I’d get into Juliette and Roma’s romantic spy escapades, there would be a chapter about a member of their family. I found it hard to truly root for either Juliette or Roma since both were rather obnoxious. I also couldn’t quite put my finger on the genre this fell into. Was it historical fiction or fantasy or both 🤷🏾♂️? Regardless, I enjoyed the way Gong rebranded these two iconic characters, and I look forward to reading the second book in this series.
