Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Impossible to play at 1.5x
Revisado: 03-29-25
I've gotten into the habit of listening to my titles at 1.5x speed. Then I came across Greenlights. The author is a master storyteller and the way he delivers the word from the page is really something. His Texan drawl comes out and you cannot shortcut this book. It's short enough and not a typical memoir as it's clearly defined from the beginning. I grew up watching McConaughey so this book was rather enlightening. Makes Hollywood seem normal and inspiring.

Historia
Step back inside the world of President Jed Bartlet’s Oval Office with Fitzgerald and McCormack as they reunite the West Wing cast and crew in a lively and colorful “backstage pass” to the timeless series. This intimate, in-depth reflection reveals how The West Wing was conceived, and spotlights the army of people it took to produce it, the lifelong friendships it forged, and the service it inspired.

if you liked The West Wing show, but only a lot, listen to this book.
Revisado: 09-29-24
I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I bought this book. I really enjoyed The West Wing television show, and this book is a 16-hour love letter to that series. It goes in chronological order and doesn't pull any punches such as Sorkin leaving and Rob Lowe's thoughts in hindsight. Overall I don't know if it told me anything I didn't know or hear before, but it did settle some inner turmoil that I wasn't alone with irrationally liking this show. The greatest drama behind the scenes wasn't a Charlie Sheen disturbance, but the death of John Spencer. Again, it was a love letter, but I liked it.

Historia
There have been many books - on a large and small scale - about Steve Jobs, one of the most famous CEOs in history. But this book is different from all the others. Becoming Steve Jobs takes on and breaks down the existing myth and stereotypes about Steve Jobs. The conventional, one-dimensional view of Jobs is that he was half genius, half jerk from youth, an irascible and selfish leader who slighted friends and family alike.

an honest look
Revisado: 09-06-24
I liked this perspective on the life of Steve Jobs. I enjoyed how it was written by a journalist and it was objective. It mentions Isaacson and official biography multiple times and it had some personal stories too. This book helped me answer the questions I had about the subject.

Historia
The definitive biography of Herbert Hoover, one of the most remarkable Americans of the 20th century - a revisionist account that will forever change the way Americans understand the man, his presidency, and his battle against the Great Depression. A poor orphan who built a fortune, a great humanitarian, a president elected in a landslide and then routed in the next election, arguably the father of both New Deal liberalism and modern conservatism - Herbert Hoover is also one of our least understood presidents.

Revisado: 01-04-24
I knew Hoover, but I got a real education with this book. Bought because I'm a fan of the narrator. There were parts that kind of dragged on, but there were definitely many nuggets of insightful information laid out about a highly misunderstood American.

He was a gentle dreamer whose genial bearded visage was recognized around the world, but most people got to know him only through the iconic characters born of his fertile imagination: Kermit the Frog, Bert and Ernie, Miss Piggy, Big Bird. The Muppets made Jim Henson a household name, but they were just part of his remarkable story.

one of the best books I listened to all year!
Revisado: 08-22-22
At first I was skeptical that I could find 21 hours entertaining on Jim Hensen, but this book kept my attention all the way through. The narration was superb and it gave an honest, objective look at his life. lots of biographies have a fanboy tone to them, but I thought this was objective all the way through. I enjoyed how little seeds were laid down earlier in the book (like storytelling being something to work on), and how it blew up when it mattered (Dark Crystal). Like almost every American younger than 55, Hensen 's influence touched my life, and it was cool to see the curtain pulled back a bit. I would highly recommend this book.

Historia
Alexandra Horowitz’s brilliant On Looking: Eleven Walks with Expert Eyes shows us how to see the spectacle of the ordinary - to practice, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle put it, "the observation of trifles". On Looking is structured around a series of eleven walks the author takes, mostly in her Manhattan neighborhood, with experts on a diverse range of subjects, including an urban sociologist, the well-known artist Maira Kalman, a geologist, a physician, and a sound designer. She also walks with a child and a dog to see the world as they perceive it.

Should have listened to the introduction
Revisado: 05-20-22
I rarely post reviews. this book had a lot of potential, and at times there were sparks of intrigue, but the narration was a bore. kudos to the author who stepped up to cover the audio version here, but it was painfully monotone. it did not engage me how I thought it would because the colorful prose posed actually as a barrier to the moments of research rather than just observation. the premise is an interesting concept I just think some lime could have been injected.
